This is very dystopian considering most of the country doesn't have electricity. I feel like this is something out of a movie or a nightmare.

They must have so much pressure. Can you guys imagine if they make one wrong move or mess up the lyrics? I’m sure the punishment is a lot more than just getting fired 🥺

It's sad we can't even fully appreciate the sheer talent these ladies are displaying, given the circumstances. But I would still like to take a moment and praise their poise and vocal ability. Their synchronization is olympic level. These performances are always so crisp and really engaging. It makes me smile when I get a couple of seconds to get lost in the performance instead of thinking about their situation. I genuinely hope one day this will no longer be a problem.

I always watch this NK-Pop girls group and the Moranbong Band especially the most talented string quartet leader Sonu Hyang-hui. I love their performaces.♥

By adjusting the portion thoughout, this performance could be halved in height to give space for the other half showing real life there. That would be really powerful.

I've been watching too much DPRK pop music when I'm starting to recognize songs.

Was this filmed in 1970? or is North Korea just that far behind the rest of the world? (in terms of musical arrangement, instrumentation, singing style, choreography, stage effects and decor, etc.) This is straight 1970s disco vibes crossed with early 1900s American suffragette vibes.

Apparently the government of that nation (and by extension the culture) has an obsessive fixation on everything military. The performers all had military-inspired costumes, they sang about their “powerful” nation, and even the audience, seated in rigid rows, cheered in unison.

Imagine getting these girls together again in a few years once the North Korean people are free, singing the same tune but to lyrics about about how they dashed to the future without Kim Jong Un

Nothing says joyous like a backing orchestra of old men in full military dress uniforms! I was also struck by the "cultural appropriation". I'll bet few if any of the instruments being played were made in North Korea, particularly the synthesizer(s) and the electric violin. Ditto for the lighting and television equipment. Those must surely be imports acquired by forcing their people to work in foreign countries for years at a time or from selling their women to Chinese men desperate to find wives after all the years of female infanticide practiced by China.

On April 5 at 5:13 PM CDT I saw 1 commercial before the video started. At that time the video had 589 likes and 13 dislikes. I didn’t see any more commercials after that one.

I traveled to the DPRK and this video fills me with dread... I only went through 5 nights of this. Imagine what it's like to go your entire life only hearing music like this...

It's really eerie listening to them sing about how great their country is yet they are starving and suffering and dying for having opposing opinions and scared to even think. It's really disturbing and heartbreaking at the same time.

Yeonmi, for such videos you should turn advertisements off. You may not be able to be punished in terms of copyright infringement because it is North Korean music, but is it fair on the artists here that you’re making money from their work when they see nothing of it? You also don’t credit the song or the band at all in the description, but are using it for your self promotion. For me, it just feels a bit uncomfortable.
