Thanks for the video Caleb. Let's say I have John (the first user) who referred Mike, and then Mike referred Suzy, and then Suzy referred Dan. Using self-joins, how can I link Dan back to John? How can I find the "original" referee for any given user i.e. the user at the end of the chain. Thanks!

Shouldn't these dependencies be removed via normalization and thus, self-joins being deemed useless?
