The pure ignorance of these women... especially the one in the copper colored dress. Blatantly disregarding ethno cultural nuances within the grass root level Sri Lankan communities... you cannot merely translate Western standards of menstrual health to countries like ours... deeply rooted cultural perceptions are part of our social fabric... and must be approached with care... so just because your upbringing is of a western world view.. your ability to discuss that topic with such superiority is, putting simply hard to watch.
100 % agree. I watched the mid section of the interview with much amusement. In developed nations, there is so much emphasis on respecting and embracing cultural norms; where as these ladies are shunning age old practices that do have scientific reasoning. Times have changed and not everyone has to follow these rituals. Not being able to accommodate these rituals as apposed to ridiculing them, is cring worthy to say the least. Educating and providing feminine higine items to all is absolutely a wonderful cause. However, a great cause shouldn't come at the expense of cultural norms and age old traditions.
It's interesting to encounter the term "Western standard of menstrual health." While I value the importance of respecting ethnocultural beliefs, it's worth considering how others judge those who do not follow certain rituals. This can lead to cultural shock, which is a common experience for many of us. I was particularly troubled to learn about a girl being kept from school for thirty days to perform rituals.
