I met him at Hanson's and I will say he is a great guy and knows what he is talking about. ran 6 miles with him went from a 7;55 first mile to him wanting to see who would stay with him so he dropped a 5:50 the next mile and then stayed at 6:10 until the last mile where he dropped a 5:38. The whole time he was tell about how to improve with running like we were going 7:30 per mile. Great guy

And today he coaches an elite team of up and coming runners, and he follows a style that is rapidly proving to produce some of the best and most consistent runners in the world at the 1500 to 10k range (I say that because a similar format is used by the Ingebrigtsen's and Cole Hocker)

I'm from his hometown of Rockford and it was really cool when I was running cross country to run for a school with that kind of legacy. He's a pretty friend guy as well.

I participated in the last HS race that he DIDNT win (he was a sophomore, myself a senior) he was such a stand up guy, congratulating each and every one of us that finished behind him in the 1600m state finals. He just ran a 4:12 (again, just a sophomore and in 1999 that was really fast, finished 3rd or 4th) He really took off big time after that. I was always proud to tell people that the Olympian on tv "used to kick my ass in high school"

That first video shows his commitment 🙏🏼. Just like you said about him and Salazar they literally go to the doors of death and put it all out there. Here because I saw a list of the fastest times on UW-Parkside's cross country course. He holds the 5k record on the course with a time of 14:35 back in 2000. So hard to believe a human being is capable of that.

i disagree with your input about his foot strike in the first race video. He does not strike the ground in front of him. he lowers his foot as it is in front of him, but pulls back before it strikes, as most runners do. you can see in previous parts of the race at a better angle than the one you stopped at.

If you dig through his career his best races were the ones where he was under control early and moved in the middle and the end of races. both national xc championships he moved forward in the second half, 207 marathon, 1256 5k (broke the american record for like 4 days i think it was lol) The time he ran at kenosha in high school hasn't even been approached by some of the best high school distance kids that have come through in the last 10 or so years. Ritz was unstoppable when he was on.

His reaction after winning was like me in high school lol. I threw up after almost every race, as soon as I crossed the line. And I wasn’t even running anywhere near as fast lol
