I think social media has made the term 'friend' inflationary. What most Americans used to call friends have been acquaintances/colleagues in Germany before social media. To me as an older German a friend is a person which I could call at 3 am in the morning and ask her/him to pick me up since my car has broken down 100 miles away from our hometown. An acqaintance/colleguage is a person which whom I like to meet for a beer after work or do some sport activities, but I would never call her/him a friend unless we get closer after a couple of time.
Very valid point! I myself don't have many friends because as you rightly pointed out acquaintances are just THAT - acquaintances. I think, as another comment pointed out, it could be a generational thing. A lot of people often talk about the different "types" of friends one has: the type you could call at 3am and who would truly be there for you; or the buddy you meet occasionally for a coffee or a beer to talk about whatever. There are levels to friendship in a sense, which I think is part of the social media age.. different terms but same old meanings. ;)

So it sounds like what’s jokingly called the Seattle Freeze? Seattle is a mix of Indigenous and Scandinavian culture. Respect means taking the time to get to know us before you ask how we are, or asking to get a coffee, etc.
When I was in Berlin, I was asked by a Germans female if she and a friend could sit with me and my group of friends, I thought that was cool and said yes. I was also hugged by a group of Germans because I gave them cigarettes. We stayed in touch and they came to my friend's 25th birthday party. I'm very direct and I think that helps. My German friend kept saying how did you do that, then I coached her to invite someone to her party. I like that Germans are able to be reserved and observe a person's character, in London a person's qualities can be seen as a weakness. If you were in London you would get approached a lot.
It's def not just munich i live in wiesbaden and i made a video askin how the hell do u make friends with people who are very cliquey until you get the greenlight to join the group and then they are clingy in weird ways lol
Just follow your hobbies ... e.g. if you like to hike / travel ... it should not be hard to find a group on e.g. FB and then go for a hike. Repeat and repeat again ... and if the vibe was ok for all you are part of the group in a very short time. Thats how I made some new friends from munich - skiing/snowboarding trip. If you met ignorand or cocky people ... of course this doesnt work. But the good thing is .. try again .. there a lots of people out there. Just my personal opinon.
"What's the worst that could happen?" It depends on circumstances you neglect to account for. I once heard about a young lady who asked out a guy she had just sat next to on a plane, and he said he was not interested. She had to spend the whole rest of the flight sitting beside him. Think how awkward that must've been. So if you take a shine to someone you are sitting beside on a plane, it's okay to ask them out, but wait until the plane has landed and the two of you are disembarking.
So in that scenario, the "worst" thing that actually happened was that it was awkward? It's one flight, she took one chance, it didn't work out - oh well! Life goes on, worse things happen haha I think if you look at that "awkward" situation with some humour and don't take it too seriously, it's fine! :) Life is short ;)
It wasn't just awkward. It was awkward for the _whole flight._ Maybe some people are mature enough to whether that and not take it too seriously, but other people _aren't._ I'm just saying it would've been better if she had asked him out as they were _disembarking._ That way, if he had not been interested, it would've only been awkward long enough for her to get off the plane. Same deal with dating in the workplace. There's a reason so many employers (at least in the US) have policies against it. They're not trying to rain on the parade. It's just generally unwise.
In my opinion it ist very dificult for foreigners to find friends here. The people here are more focused in work and are very racional. They are more individualistic and therefore they do not really enjoy the company of other people or enjoy small things like food etc. They do often only care about themselves and only want to recieve help from gevernment and institutes. So it is dificult in the day to day life. In general you can find some social partners in for ex. sport clubs or at work but it all keeps staying very on the surface.

No friends? Pub, club, volunteer fire department, soccer, ice hockey, ... You only need to know a handful of people and the rest will come automatically.
Gutes Video. Ich habe momentan ein Dilemma in Sachen Dating, vielleicht hast du eine Idee dazu. Ich habe ein Mädel aus Thailand kennengelernt, was hierhin gezogen ist. Ich habe schon mehrfach gehört, dass die Geschlechterrollen in Thailand noch sehr traditionell sind, d.h. eine Thai würde niemals einen Mann auf ein Date bitten, sondern es immer nur vom Mann erwarten. Jetzt waren wir auch schon zweimal auf eine Art Date, also wir haben was zusammen unternommen, aber kein Dinner Date oder so. Nur kommt von ihr kein weiterer Vorschlag oder Andeutung, dass sie nochmal was unternehmen will. Jetzt weiß ich nicht, ob das der Wink mit dem Zaunpfahl ist, dass sie wirklich nichts von mir will, oder ob es nur die thailändische Zurückhaltung ist? Zudem sind wir beide auch noch schüchtern. Das heißt ich will auch nicht mit der Tür ins Haus fallen aus Angst vor einer Blamage. Was mach ich nur, argh :D

Ich würde dir raten ihr einfach mal zu schreiben und sie ganz offen und direkt fragen ob sie tatsächlich Lust auf ein drittes Date mit dir hätte oder eben nicht. :) Falls sie dir keine klare/deutliche Antwort gibt, dann hast du ja eigentlich ihre Antwort. Muss ja nicht so kompliziert sein, wenn sie dich wirklich interessiert dann streng dich an, falls nicht - nicht so tragisch! Viel Erfolg.. sag mir dann bitte wie es gelaufen ist ;)
Es kam was dazwischen, gelinde gesagt. Und zwar muss sie ihr Visum erneuern, bevor sie nächstes Jahr hier ihre Ausbildung anfängt. Da das von der Botschaft aus nicht zu gehen scheint, musste sie nach Thailand fliegen, um das zu beantragen. Sie dachte, innerhalb zwei Wochen dort hätte sie das Visum. Tja und jetzt hat man ihr offenbart, dass sie vier Monate auf ihr Visum warten muss! Das heißt sie kann erst Januar nach Deutschland zurückkommen... Jetzt ist sie natürlich deprimiert, weil ihre Familie hier lebt und sie dort fast niemanden mehr hat, bzw. die Freunde arbeiten tagsüber und sie ist alleine. Ich hätte mich ja zur Heirat angeboten, aber so weit sind wir noch lange nicht, haha... naja was soll ich sagen, ein Date ist erstmal auf Eis gelegt...
@@Mike500 Das ist natürlich ärgerlich mit dem Visum. Typische Bürokratie. Na wenn dir die Frau wirklich wichtig ist, dann wirst du dich hoffentlich in ein Flieger setzen und nach Thailand jetten oder nicht? :)
WOW...seems like dating in Germany is more challenging and less "gentleman" like than in U.S. Most women in U.S. like a gentleman, like men to take the lead and pay although we are capable of paying and some of us take the first step but opening doors treating women like equals yes and with respect is fine but most of us see ourselves as ladies and well frankly we want to be cherished and treated like it and most American men oblige and enjoy the honor we give back by appreciating what they do for us! I feel like I need to sit down with a German man and flush this German dating culture out. We have our challenges in U.S. sometimes too. These days it seems like dating is ridiculously hard to do...what happened to the good old days when men just made it easy and approached a woman respectfully, showed interest, she either reciprocated or declined and sure friendship is foundational but my goodness it seems so "bubble" like these days AND where are the eligible worthy bachelors anyways?! Ok...thanks for your empathy on my rant. Haha I want to hold a singles forum worldwide. LOL Danke Theresia. 💜
Just Aprogrammer I’m very feminist and I expect the man to hold the door open and pay for dinner if he asked me out. If I ask him to go somewhere, then I assume I’m paying. With female friends, I always ask because we take turns treating each other or each paying for ourselves. If I have to ask who’s paying, why am I going out with a man?
