I met my Korean boyfriend in kind of unconventional way...I'm super introverted so I hate going to clubs lol...and I'm not someone who can handle casual sexual/romantic relationships because I'm sensitive and get emotionally attached easily (know thyself). I joined a pen pal app, found him as a language exchange partner, and we were able to grow a friendship while writing each other long-form letters for a few months before realizing we had romantic feelings for each other. We started sending each other snail-mail letters and packages. 6 months later he was able to come visit me in the U.S. for the first time, and I'm planning to come visit Korea in a month! Learning about him and his life, growing closer over a longer period of time, and falling in love has been the most rewarding experience of my life. There are ways you can put yourself "out there" while avoiding the hellscape that is modern-day dating/hookup apps and skeevy people and f*ckboys at clubs!

20:08 no offense but this is the mature and adult response. Sometimes you need to just ask for what you want. People talk about Koreans being more conservative but a woman relying on signals and nonverbal communication is pretty conservative too. In the same way men miss out on women for failing to ask them out, women are gonna miss out on men because they think he should just "get" the signal.

In West you could be laughed at if you say publicly something like this... I am also a Christian woman, I am in my 30s, I am European, I am highly educated (Ph.D.) and I am virgin. There is nothing wrong with that, it is about personal values. My boyfriend accepts it and agrees with it. And I have a lot of friends (both males and females) who are virgins in their 20s and 30s or who got married as virgins (not all of them are religious people).

considering I'm as atheist as they come (and from pretty much the least religious country in the world) and a lesbian, this comment surprisingly resonates with me a lot. I've only had one sexual partner, have always prioritized education (working as a university lecturer since I was 20) and am nearly 30 now. I think it's bizarre that not wanting to sleep around with every other person and innately feeling like that would be immoral, gross and wrong for you personally is only associated with being religious. morals exist independently from religions and aren't necessarily based on patriarchal prejudices against women etc. I just think it is sexist and unfair of hetero men to expect chastity of women if they don't follow the same rules. it is insane to me that virginity is considered more shameful these days than changing bedmates like socks. personally, I wouldn't want to date a woman who's had many partners, especially male ones. it doesn't mean I'm "sl*tshaming" anyone, I just know that we aren't compatible in terms of values, relationship ideals, how serious we are about dating, and of course sexuality. not wanting to date someone incompatible isn't prejudice, it's common sense. I have tried being more open-minded and dated the serial dater types of women and they've always led me on and betrayed me so not making that mistake again. similarly, I don't expect someone who wants a partner with p0rn star level experience to date me either. it's just about compatibility after all.

With respect to foreign women being considered easy, as a Latina myself, I found the stereotypes other countries have on foreigners, specially certain nationalities, very problematic whenever I go abroad. I met my Korean bf on tinder a year ago. The difference might be that he's from the countryside and had never dated a foreigner. This to me gives him some kind of innocence that you won't find in those guys in Hongdae. I don't live in Seoul and neither does my bf and I made a point of only messaging guys in KOREAN. The problem is when you use English your pool of potential suitors is a lot smaller and a lot of these guys who are good at English and good looking are well aware of these facts and so they can play with foreign girls. SO my advice would be to stay away from the obvious "good at English, well acquainted with the foreign community" guys. I visited Hongdae at night recently (for the first and probably last time) and saw a whole group of foreign girls standing around this one Korean guy... would you do this in your country? Think about it! this is how you give men egos girls!

I spent 4 hours hangout with this guy. He was a friend of my friend. Before meeting we spoke for 2 months occasionally and one day he invited me for dinner. He paid for it. Then I took him to a Cafe for coffee and dessert I paid for it. I told him I had a great time and told him upfront that we shouldn't meet again. We have different vision and views about life so I don't want to waste his time and my time. A week later he asked me out again to try a new restaurant but I declined the offer.

Great discussion. There is so much to unpack from the discussion that I do hope there is another part to this discussion. What are women looking for in a boyfriend is it the same criteria for a non Korean boyfriend or is it the K-drama tropes, it is from one extreme to the other. Unrealistic expectations seems to be the pick of the day. So another episode to delve a little deeper would be great. At least for me. Good job David and guests. Most guys find it easier to approach women that gives those kinds of signals because we know you are attracted to us, rather than girls that don't. Less chance of being rejected and more of having a good conversation to get to know each other.

I'm glad to finally see people who didn't just immediately say "Tinder is trash and you can never meet anybody on there" I fell into a lot of negativity after I met an fboy ex on there and was constantly consuming media that said using Tinder in Korea will never work. Proud to say I have been with my amazing boyfriend for almost two years and we met on Tinder! We are both not the usual type of people that use Tinder and it's seriously all about luck and timing. Good luck to everybody trying to date in Korea!

Ok, in Europe you can date for 6 months without becoming an official couple, but in those 6 months you would probably get to hold hands, kiss, and if people are open do even more or go all the way. I know couples that got into a relationship very fast and some that were dating/ platonic for 4 months... before anything happened.

You can't generalize a whole dating culture to a whole continent with different counntries with very different cultures. It's not the case at all for my country

@@sekaitherborn3618 That is why I did not generalize at all, I said "In Europe, you can do this", but I saw fast dating and slow dating as well. So I was saying exactly that there is not only one way, it depends on people and what they prefer.

@@shamkand Well, you could also say that for Latin America, the US, Canada and some places in Maghreb too, but those places have a huge diversity in dating sultures. I am generaly against making statements for a whole continent since generalizes too much or end up being a void statement. But yeah, I get it, maybe you wanted to talk about the diversity of situations.

@@sekaitherborn3618 I only said Europe because I only lived in multiple countries in Europe and I don't know about America (I did not experience it). They were saying that in Korea there is a "Korean type of dating" that people know about and asked if there is something similar in other places, so I wanted to say in Europe I did not notice a thing that everyone is doing and is specific only to a country. I noticed that depending on the person it can go both ways.

I think that korean guy think foreign girls are easy because, in the opinion of the guys, they are so much easier to impress. In the west, girls sometimes do judge people based on their income and everything, but it's considered shallow and taboo. I think korean guys feel like they have to work SO HARD to impress korean women. So by comparison "western girls are easy" .

I think it is really not okay to blame it on Korean girls. The fact is in general men find foreign women easy wherever you go. Because they think it’d be without any strings attached, any responsibility and even without any potential future. Just like Sonja said.
