In 4 NCAA finals, Daton Fix has not scored a single offense point, only escapes, stalling points, and penalty points. 2019 vs Suriano, 2 escapes. 2021 vs RBY, 2 stalling points. 2022 vs RBY, 2 escapes. 2024 vs Vito 2 escapes and 1 penalty point.
In 2019 they called a horrible stalemate. Suriano was gonna get ridden out if they didn’t call that stalemate. I’d say fix in 2019 was his best chance to win a natty.
@xenonmaster6668 maybe but its not the refs fault he never won a title. He literally did not score points and he was almost gifted a title the first time he wrestled RBY.
Being in the video review room with the officials there is a lot of moving parts. Also, it was really hard for them to hear on the phone so there are glitches that could be improved
Even heavyweight today still take more shots than Fix. Fix need to fix his damn offense and develop a shot that works. You would think in 5 years in collage he would change that and develop as an offensive machine. But I guess he's content wrestling defensively and giving crowds a boring match.
In Fix’s 4 NCAA championship appearances (2019 vs Suriano, 2021 vs RBY, 2022 vs RBY, and 2024 vs Vito) he has only ever scored points for escapes, stalling, and locked hands. Never once had he gotten a takedown, reversal, riding time, or back points in his 4 championship matches. Might be the least offensive wrestler in D1 History
His ranking and bracket this year were fixed to give him another finals shot, and he nearly screwed that up with Zero offensive points in the quarter finals, semi finals, and finals.
@@ImOnlySIeepingin freestyle, a full on 2 handed push out of bounds doesn't count as a push out point, it needs to be during wrestling action. Also, there needs to be a foot stepping out to be counted as a step out point. Ways wrestlers dodge this rule is by dropping to their knees during their defensive position so if they go out of bounds then it's just back to middle with no points awarded. But at times offensive wrestlers use it to their advantage because they can get to the legs and hope for a step out point without ever actually finishing a takedown properly. Its not a perfect rule, just something else to think about.
I remember when his older brother Nick was wrestling and dominating . We all as youngsters were in awe - until a wise buddy of ours had said, “Wait until Vito comes around, this kid’s gonna be an animal.” Lo and behold, an animal he is. Incredible to see.
The crowd was not booing Daton Fix. They were booing the bad calls in the quarter-finals that gave Daton the win. They were booing the bad calls in the semi-finals that gave Daton the win. They were booing in the finals because it was happening again.
Please note: His 0 takedowns was not because he was being destroyed by tech. fall or pinned...Daton lost his finals by a combined total of 7 points. A takedown in regulation against Suriano or twice with Roman Bravo-Young would have gotten him a championship.
Thank goodness I could fast forward watching here; but anyway, wasn't even close -- Vito's all heart, drive and enthusiasm. The look on his face beginning the third period left zero doubt to me, he's gonna win.
Sad that either of these grapplers has to miss out on the victory. 4 Silver Medals(aka NCAA Runner up’s) nothing to be ashamed of. As the commentators noted, we are witnessing “very high level wrestling”. Go Big Red!
You can understand why Vito was so mad. He saw the ref call 3 for the takedown and settled in and let action go off the mat. If it wasn't going to be a TD, he would have had the opportunity to pull him back in and try again.
Deadass and he was ripping on fix the whole time. I expect a lot more professionalism from a regional commentator. This guys on national TV ripping an accomplished athlete.
Hey shout out to the NCAA. Great choice of announcers. They did a great job! I think the NCAA has found the right team to announce the tournament in the future.
You kinda feel bad for the guy at this point always ending on loss for this tournament. He took 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 4th, & 2nd. Not to mention he took 2ND at senior worlds 😅. Hopefully that doesn’t get in way mentally for him moving forward tryin to make a Olympic team
I saw an interview of Fix after the match, and he was smiling, and I thought "Good for him to be able to smile after the way things turned out - he must've seen the bright side." And I couldn't think of why, but I thought of the Bills documentary I saw on Netflix last month. I'd seen some, fell asleep, and woke up towards the end when the Bills interviewees each smiled for the camera - which I thought was a good thing to see, having gone through that much heartbreak. ... but when I watched the parts I missed, up through the end, I started to think that, based on the way they spoke about it, they were probably smiling for the camera to a large extent. Watching Fix speak, it felt similar. And then I finally realized why I thought of the 90's Bills when seeing the thumbnail of his interview.
With the NFL analogy> Daton Fix is more like Jay Cutler. He has all of the abilities to be one of the greats in the sport. However, he seems to lack the drive to improve his abilities.
20+ minute match because of all the blood time and challenges. Vito was the aggressor and showed that sitting back and playing defensive can burn you. Shout out to the 4x’ers. It extremely rare and based on this year Mesembrink can’t join, Welsh won’t, Shapiro can’t, Kasak (who did a hell of a job running off 7 straight on the back side) won’t. Just shows how hard this thing is. Kasak wrestled up at 149 due to Van Ness’ injury. Since the 2021 year is not counted Kasak can redshirt and come back at 141 in 2025-2026. Penn St is going to have a log jam of wrestlers who can start anywhere except there
Serious question: is there an interview or article I can read somewhere with daton giving his thoughts on his collegiate career? I wonder what goes through his mind in these big matches. Is it nerves, luck, is he a head case? Genuinely curious.
I dont like that style of wrestling Fix, Teemer, RBY and others have. Do nothing, no offense, just wait for your opponent to shoot then react. Its boring and in the end when you need a shot, or go to move or some offense its not there. Im glad Vito showed RBY last year and Fix this year in the finals how its done.
Don’t lump rby in there his freshman and sophomore year he was a takedown machine. Idk why he shut it down later on but bro he teched jordan Decatur off tds only he put a football score of like 25-7 on that boy
I watched RBY have 17 takedowns in one match….Hr scored more points maybe than anyone I’ve ever watched….Its about matchups….he wrestled a certain way to beat Fix. And RBY wasn’t on steroids.
Even John Smith knew Fix was not going to win. Fix, is purely defensive and reactive, does not initiate. It is almost like he’s scared to initiate and end up in a situation he’s uncomfortable in. Can’t win the Big stage like that.
As a former wrestler it's no small feat reaching the finals in a tournament. Doing it at that level four times is admirable, five times if you count the World Championship. 5x Big 10 Champion. A great wrestler.
I love watching Vito's dad on the sidelines go crazy during the match. He was so animated! Same the David Carr's dad during his Big 12 champioship match with Keegan O'Toole. He was going crazy on the sidelines.
Fix should have wrestled the first two periods with the same intensity he had in the last 15 seconds. It kind of breaks my heart because he had the potential to win this thing. Nothing against Vito. He's the real deal. It's just hard to see fix not wrestle to his potential.
Although nowhere close to Fix's caliber. In my minimal wrestling career, I carried more silvers than anything. My mindset was to fight to the championship but then everything fell apart for my mindset and skills. The plus side. I had a TON of medals but way too many silvers....
He wrestles not to lose and definitely one of the biggest stallers. I mean obviously he's extremely immensely talented you don't become a four-time division 1 All-American but whenever he's on that main stage semi-final or final if I was the officiating crew I'd be hitting him for stalling in the first period and could have been hit for fleeing the mat. What toys and composure veto has when you're getting screwed over and screwed out of points
