I count myself privileged to have witnessed first-hand as a young boy at the Wanderers the magnificence of the Transvaal cricket team in the early 80's. Jimmy Cook (father of Stephen), Henry Fotheringham, Clive Rice, Graeme Pollock (uncle of Shaun), Big Vince van der Bijl, Ray Jennings (father of Keaton), Kevin McKenzie (father of Neil)! SA cricket legends all of them!
Saw a lot of Jimmy Cook when he played for Somerset in the late 1980's and early 1990's,fantastic player with a very prolific record in his time at the club.Probably would have been a very good test batsman in different times.
@@sknn497 ,think Jimmy Cook scored more centuries in a season at Somerset than Viv Richards did in all the time he was there. Shows what a good player Jimmy was.
@bofursgun well there was an all rounder double wicket compitition where Procter and Van der Bijl joined forces and they have won it..against Rice and others... And I saw some good shots from Van Der Bijl that day. Remember he always batted late... Nr 8 or nr 9...so most times he just played shots... But I saw him in a few innings where he easily hit 40-60 runs... He was not a mug with the bat. That is forsure. Sure Mike Proctor was better with bat maybe with bal also...( 6 centuries in one season) but you can be sure Vince will hit a few runs when he comes to bat.
The first 25 seconds contains the only footage on RU-vid of the bowling of Vincent van der Bijl. A man, who on good authority, was arguably the finest bowler never to play test cricket. He looked pretty decent.
This in in the 1980s ,think he was part of South African squad that was to tour Australia in 1970. He would have been at his peak in the 70s. He played a season for Middlesex at the end of his career in the early 80s and took over 100 wickets at 14 each.
There's a Ray Jennings compilation which has Big Vince bowling a delivery as well...so two in this match ,one in the Hanley Windies match and two here...4 deliveries!
Just found this of him playing for Middlesex v Surrey in the 1980 Gillette Cup Final. I was there. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3Xb7FyQZKH4.html
I saw Vintcent van der Bijl in his season for Middlesex. Amazing bowler. WE won the Championship and the Gillette Cup that year. A legend at Middlesex even though he only played one season.
@@stephenmcloughlin7718 If he was well past his best then he must of been stratospherically good in his prime. Took a bucket of wickets in the Championship for Middlesex. He is as I said in my previous comment a legend at the club even though he played only one season.
@@simonlilley , yes he was still a brilliant bowler whilst at Middlesex, but that was in 1980. He was picked for South Africa on their aborted tour of Australia in 1971, so probably would have been at his best in the mid 70s. But as you say he was still good whilst at Middlesex.
@@simonlilley I think the next season he averaged 9.5 with the ball in the SA Currie cup first class competition! .he retired after the first West Indian tour when he still averaged around 18.5 against them.

The world was deprived of a great south african team in the 70s and 80s....think of a late 70s early 80s team graeme pollock, jimmy cook, peter kirsten, barry richards,Kepler wessels..allan lamb...wk Jennings ... mike proctor...clive rice...van der blij, garth le roux....
@@montyf2165 in 1978 I think World Series Cricket, Barry Richards got a century, Clive Rice 80 odd, Mike Procter 60. Rest of the world beat Windies by an innings. Holding, Robert's, Garner etc bowling for the Windies. Richards, Greenidge, Lloyd batting. The South African side of the time would have been a good bit better than the world series cricket, rest of the world side.
