I drove standard transmissions a lot when I was learning and even now I have a standard transmission Jeep. But I have to disagree with you a little. I drove an International, 16-speed, two shifter, tandem dump truck some decades ago and that was a horse of a different smell. Had to learn that almost as if I never drove a standard.

Amen! In most countries, if you pass a driving test with an automatic transmission, your full driving licence will be marked as "Restricted to vehicles with automatic transmission" or equivalent. This means if you want to drive a manual transmission, you must sit a driving test again with a manual car. But, if you pass with a manual transmission, your licence will permit you to drive ANY cars.

Brought back so many memories, especially my school bus driving instructor. He pounded into our heads the "Friction Point" of the clutch. Would make us hold the bus on a slight uphill incline with nothing but our foot on the clutch. You couldn't pass his class without mastering this. There were rumors of him taking off his wrist watch and placing it behind the front tire during testing, but he used a raw egg in my class. Best driving lesson I ever had.

Hi Mike, Eva did great. Once she gets to be at ease with shifting, I can see her shifting without the clutch. I had a 78 Z-28 with a 4 speed and taught two of my nieces to drive stick and they didn't believe me you could shift with using the clutch. They were both all smiles when they learned and the older even showed off to her boyfriend she could shift without the clutch. She told me her boyfriend said it couldn't be done and was amazed when she showed him how to do it. Of coarse she was using my Z-28, which made huge points with her boyfriend. You and the family stay safe.

You brought back good memories of teaching both of my sons to drive a stick! The thing both of them were the most afraid of/frustrated by was learning to get going from a dead stop on a significant incline. Eva did quite good for her first effort!😃 I would have taken your own advise and moved that seat up for her so she could bottom out that clutch more easily. When I taught my sons I first went over the mechanics of why a manual didn't freewheel going down a hill like an automatic. The other thing I did was to turn the truck off and set the parking break and have them practice the mechanics of shifting through the gears. When to press the clutch, how to coordinate the gas peddle with the clutch and working through the gear pattern. After all that practice while sitting still, things were easier when we got moving, though they still killed the engine a good number of times.😉 We used the roads in a barely opened up subdivision which seemed to be much easier to learn on, not going in circles helped . But you use what you have available.👍

I liked watching this as it brought back memories for me. My grandfather had an old 1972 or 1973 F-250 (brown in color), and I used to ride in it with my uncle quite a bit. I paid attention to how he drove it and learned quite a bit from that. It was the vehicle that I learned how to drive standard in. They had a dairy farm that the truck was used on most of the time. Over the years the box got rusted out, so they put a dump box on the back and a different cab at the same time. You both look like you had a good time teaching and learning. Learning to drive a standard is challenging but it's fun once you learn it. Learning to drive standard is actually two parts, learning the pedals and what gear to be in. She will get the hang of it, just takes practice. Good idea with the school parking lot. I made that suggestion to someone for learning how to back up with a boat trailer behind them.

I have an 83 f150 with a 300+ 4spd granny. Love that truck. Bought it in highschool. And the joy of driving something born the same year as yourself, what a great feeling. Now she just needs to learn how float shift the gears. I had my crash course when I went to go upshift, and half my clutch linkage fell onto the road ( non-hydrolic clutch ). I got real good, real fast at float shifting. I made it to a friend's house not too far away. Welder, small pipe, and square peg to mate into a round hole. Not ideal, but I made it work, until I could order the right parts. When I got my CDL, float shifting gears was second nature to me, from my colorful childhood. Man, good times. Like I said, better she learn to float the gears now, instead of later. Trust me, I should know.

I had to tell this story. About a year ago I made an appointment at U-Haul to have a trailer hitch installed on my truck (5 speed manual transmission). When I arrived the young man working there told me to pull it around the side to the shop doors. I did that and then went inside the shop to go over a few things with him and a couple of other young men who were also working there. After our discussion the one fellow said, hey we will start on it right now you can go wait in the waiting area, we won't be long. So I am sitting there a few minutes and in the door here they all come. I'm thinking now what, they can't be done by now when they all said in unison hey can you pull your truck in the shop, nobody here can drive a manual transmission, I couldn't help but get a good giggle out of that, they were kinda scuffing their feet around with their heads hung down. Made me feel my age. 68 hey that ain't old is it? I wish that would have happened to Eva. Brought back memories of teaching my 16 year old girl friend how to drive my old 3 on the tree, Dodge Dart, not much clutch left when she was done. Oh well, I don't have either one anymore.

Mike that was a great family video to share with all of us. A memory that will last a lifetime. When my younger brother was learning to drive the 1956 Ford car/homemade El Camino on the farm a grasshopper landed on his left arm and let go of the wheel, talk about panic.

Had a 76 F150 with the 4 speed, I used 1st on hills or for the fun of it. You had to learn to slide into first just before you stopped with a satisfying clunk ( no grind ). Had a friend with a Chevy 4 speed start on a hill pulling a very heavy boat. Started in second - AHHH!!. That is why you had a stump puller creeper. Bet he took a 100 miles off the clutch with slipping. Taught my wife how to drive a stick with the truck. She learned to love it. Thanks always. Take care all. Merry Christmas all.

In the UK I learn't to drive in a Bedford Dormobile in about 1968. It had a what you call a 3 on the tree (3 speed column change) and, like you say, they don't make them like that anymore. Valuable experience for Eva, and she's lucky to have such a patient and caring dad.

My two grandsons learn how to drive in a 2006 Chevy Cobalt 5 speed that's the first thing they learn how to drive I think it's always good to have kids learn how to drive manuals. Not enough kids today knows how to drive them.

Cong-rates Eva.I learnt to drive in a 1933 Singer 9. 4 speed crash gearbox, non synchro, strait cut gears. In its time, it was a British high performance car. Around 1960 while being tested for NZ WOF certificate, after being prodded and pocked it was time for the brake test. When the line tester went to carry out the test, he was told to stand-down by the head tester as he was going to do the test. He climbed in the car and backed up as far as he could, when he reached the test point he hit the brakes, all meters read max and he starred the windscreen with his forehead. When he came around he told the other testers to carry on. He was no seen for the next 4hrs. At production time it was the first production car to come out with twin cylinder, 4 wheel hydraulic brakes. He had stopped the car with all 4 wheels locked sold from about 35-40 miles per hour.

Nice Job Eva!!! I tried to teach my daughter to drive a stick but she was left handed and never got it. Maybe if we lived in England she would have mastered the stick shift. You have great patience and your Dad is a great instructor!

Nice size firebox on your wood stove. I've had a Lopi Answer stove for almost 20 years now. It's a fireplace insert and heat the house with it . 1500 sq ft and nice warm heat. Very satisfying and makes a big difference in the gas heating bill. Love the videos as I always look forward to them. Great family and appreciate the sharing life's journey.

Those old Fords are the best to learn on, I think. Granny gear helps figuring out how to get started so much and gets past the "newness" of using the clutch. Good looking truck too!

This is such a wholesome video, love seeing young people drive manual transmission cars and trucks. We all went through that awkward phase but I look back on it with a smile on my face.
