Story 1: OP's daughter was tripping cutting her parents off. Sure the parents were a little overprotective but they stopped the daughter from making a big mistake. The daughter can't just blame everything on her parents and has to take some responsibility for picking a bad ex.
The pi was a great idea. In fact probably all the info obtained was available in public records. PIs know how to access this info that the average person usually does not.

You absolutely did the right thing as a father. The fact that she didn't listen to you, just means that that vile criminal has her manipulated into a corner. The hardest part for you and your wife is that since she's now a legal adult there's not as much that you can do to protect her. She has to discover things on her own, but we all know how much danger she's now in. 😢
As a parent of a daughter, always trust your gut! I was surprised the daughter was angry, because if nothing had been found out, she never would have known. The dad couldn't keep what he found out from her.
It doesn't surprise me, woman make zero sense. She'll likely get herself involved with an even worse guy, but this time daddy won't be around to watch her back.
The best part of the story is that those two young boys finally had a safe home and a man in their life that was a good person. It was very kind of them to take in Libby and her two sons and those boys will never forget that. Libby’s parents should be ashamed of themselves, I doubt their marriage is perfect and their behavior says they certainly are far from it but to turn your back on your own child when they need help is disgusting.
Always trust your instincts. Glad you got your daughter, and bf girlfriend, Libby and boys, free from the crazy slime ball bf. You saved their lives. So happy everything worked out. One thing, have the courts let you know if bf gets out of jail. He will go after you if he can.
there has to be a support group for dads that love their kids but drove them off because they were over protective, as opposed to narcissists who's kids went nc because they were nuts. the later wouldn't be looking for support, just an echo chamber. omg I lost it when they took in Libby. bless you op

🤦♂️ Getting a PI is not illegal, nor is the information they give. The PI knows, or should know, the full extent of the law in regards to the legal collecting of information on the individuals and the regulations involved. Plus, criminal records and accusations are in the public records, so anyone can go to the court and request information on past or current cases with redactions if needed. Somebody tell me if I’m wrong.

She did know... She didn't care... That's why she was so hell bent on hiding it by burning the evidence... Even insane people wouldn't do that... If the PI dug any further they probably would have caught her too
That's a dad that cares about his daughter's future. If my dad ever did this, I would love him more! And if Aaron is serious and is afraid of losing her, he will change. From the sounds of it, Aaron is irrisponsible individual, possibly controlling and a narcissist. Who holds their family from going outside?! Sounds like he's abusive. It was a tricky road to travel one could say. It's so hard, not to overstep boundaries when you know someone you love is heading in a bad direction with someone that is corrupt and bad. At the end everything turned out well, so I suppose a OP done the right thing all along. I guess sometimes you got a risk relationships to save the people you love.
I do believe that people can be redeemed, and change their course. My husband spent five years in prison. He’s now a business owner, and he hasn’t been in trouble with the law of fifteen years. That said, my husband is open about his past, and is proud of the man of he’s become. This man lies about everything. Lie, upon lie. This isn’t his past, this is his present.

It's never easy to learn someone you love is deceiving you. OP's daughter has loved and lost but become wise as a result. Holding her parents accountable for loving her though was way off. Helping the ex finance's girl friend and mother of his children, such kindness if wonderful! That the criminal got out and was able to try and harm OP's daughter was upsetting to say the least. Any man who treats his daughter like a princess is doing her no favours in life. Our daughters need to be taught accountability and the realties of life as much as our sons.
I'm a strong believer of letting young adults hit their heads on the wall and make their own decisions, good or bad. This story is a bit different because it involved a third party ( Libby and the kids) , but when young adults refuse to listen to warnings and believe they know everything of life, best way to teach them is to allow life to teach them those lessons

It’s legal to investigate people in your life. Investigators stay within the law while doing their job. This is a huge red flag! As a mom & investigator, I run background checks on everyone in my child’s life. Good luck.
You as a father, OP, did what was best for your daughter. Even if she did not appreciate it. But in the end, not only you gained your daughter back, you freed a woman and children in a domestic abuse and catching the ex-boyfriend red handed. OP's definitely NTA and even if he was, he's a justified A-hole. And he and his wife was right to be worried. They were only trying to protect Leah. Sometimes the road to hell is paved with good intentions. At least Leah eventually saw the light. And poor Libby..........She had fallen prey to a monster. That's why parents must bring back the stick, give harsher punishment. Discipline your kids before it's too late. This is what happens when you coddle your kids too much! I know the name Zoe looks like it should be pronounced like (Zo) but it is actually pronounced like (Zoey) I have a niece named Zoe and my dog's name is also Zoe. Both pronounced as Zoey. Great story! I'm so happy both the girls, and the twins were able to get away safely. And the fact that monster is now in jail for life, is wonderful.

For those who think he did the wrong thing hiring a PI you’re wrong - What he did he did to look out after his daughter, and what he found out was the reason why he hired a PI. The lawyer was doing his job. His lawyer was good at his job. His lawyer was not a corrupted attorney. Clearly you don’t know much about lawyers. They take a case and their job is to win for their clients. If you lose all the time people wouldn’t want to hire you. Look at Amber Herds attorney’s now as to Johnny Depp’s attorneys. Just because some are on the wrong side doesn’t make them corrupted. Everyone should be able to have attorneys representing them if they need it.

Honestly I think he did the best he could, though it was a rough road getting Leah to see he was only doing what he thought was best to keep his daughter safe. I think the only thing that would make this better would be if he and his wife did an adult adoption of Libby since her own family is so very lacking. He seems to have three daughters now, right?
Coming from a father of 21yrs. 3 kids, 2boys and a girl. You are most definitely the asshole. Now this is not always a bad thing. You are not your child's friend, you are dad. Your first duty as dad is your child's safety no matter their age. Sometimes this requires you to be an asshole. It may hurt but such is the burden of the father.
If Aaron was a good man, he'd be honest with Layla. Lies beget lies. Relationships need trust to thrive. The fact that he is asking OP to keep more secrets and partake in lies would have made my decision right there if his background and unwillingness to be forthcoming initially hadn't.
If the man were trust worthy, then he should have been glad to get to know her father. This was a major red flag. This guy isn't trustworthy and you have to have that in order to have a good marriage. Good dad, bad boyfriend/husband of daughter. Pull it together dad, You are an adult, tell her, that's the right thing to do.

The one thing I do have a problem with the dad is that he didn't teach his daughter about how to tell what people are really like. That people, guys especially will lie just to be in a relationship. That not everyone can be trusted and never fully trust anyone until you really know them. You have to teach them to think logically and to be at least a bit suspicious of everything. There's too many scams and scammers out there. You don't want your kids to be an easy mark.
Let her go then. Just make sure you transfer everything in her name back to yours. Cover her from afar, and yourselves. You did what every good parent should. Don’t blame yourself. Also, get and double every photo, recording, text you get.
Not sure if it's the way the story was written, or the way it was read, but OP doesn't come off as likeable at all. With Aaron being violent and abusive, the Dad seems a better choice, but in the end, he comes off as arrogant and controlling.

I am only at the 1st update but what I would do is write a letter from the other girlfriend and have it delivered to your daughter when the boyfriend is not around so she learns about the the kids and the other girlfriend. She will have no idea that the letter is actually a fraud but she will learn the truth and it won't be from you.😊
