Composition notes (Dave)
Like water, earth is a magical substance. I never cease to wonder at the soil and the life it creates; trees, flowers and crops. Tolkien spoke about the Flame imperishable creating all things, and this was the inspiration behind the song
This song was primarily written by Dan with lyrics by John. The quick ascending melody sung by Sally Minnear conveys an uplifting sense of hope, like trees reaching for the sky, or a climber reaching for the summit. I have to say it was a real joy to get David Fitzgerald from IONA to play on this track!
Listeners guide
You are standing barefoot on the soil. You can almost feel the life beneath your feet. The seeds, the creatures. All surviving. All living. All creating. Bringing about the birth of spring and the next push of life in all its chaos and beauty.
Lyrics (John Biglands, Daniel Day, Dave Brons)
Climbing up the heights ,flights , cathedrals in the sky
Sunlight breaks on the summit
Walking on the mountain’s bones , searching ancient stones
To find forgotten songs
Underneath the autumn fall, the seed below the soil
aches for light to recall it
From the dark that ushers in, the birth of all things
The night before the dawn
And does this mountain speak
Of what lies beneath?
And does this new life speak
Of what lies beneath?
Following the salt, road, wandering souls
search for what they’ve forgotten
Till they hear the seagulls cry , and see the endless skies
And kiss the sundering seas
And does this journey speak
Of what lies beneath?
And does this journey speak
Of what lies beneath?
Soil sea and sky singing its song
Soil sea and sky calling us home
Soil sea and sky singing its song
Soil sea and sky calling us home

My favorite Iona CD, the double live “Heaven's Bright Sun”, is a reminder of the incredible power of Iona’s live show and the classic it is by David Fitzgerald’s inspired playing. I’ve been listening to that album for 25 years now. Dave’s solo on “Flight of the Wild Goose” is one of the most epic guitars solos ever … ranking in my mind with only “Comfortably Numb”
