I really like hearing about amps and some of the mods that guys have done over the years. His idea that it's all in the hands is spot on. Guys that own a million guitars like Steve Howe, Keith and Ronnie, Slash, and a host of others, always sound like themselves regardless of which of their guitars they use. Heck, Clapton's sold and given away countless guitars and he sounds the same with whatever he's playing. Guitars, strings, amps, and effects are just tools. In the end, they're all just means to an end. A great player with a great song, it's gonna happen! Great video!

its a cjich'e. how you 'play' is in your hands. how you 'sound' is in your amp and guitar

Remember that most of the tweeds used Linear pots for the volume, and they actually were about a 30% taper, unlike the modern Linear pots which are 50%. So ‘3’ on those amps is probably around 5-6 on the modern log pots.

I have a 57 reissue, and just wanted to add that anything past 4 gets into spiky/hairy territory. It’s full on glass at 5. Between 3-4 is the sweet spot for sure.

This is interesting. I was looking at a Harvard schematic and it lists linear for volume and audio for tone. I was puzzled but you solved the mystery.

You have to try out a Dumble thru some great sealed cabinets with 4 JBL D120F Speakers. I did this back in the 1980s in Santa Cruz CA at my friends music studio. The first thing I noticed was the Attack. When you just plucked a note, the amp responded so quickly and crisp. I was playing a 1970 Gibson SG. Alex Howard Dumble lived in Santa Cruz for many years... Is he still there?

You can dial down the voltage tweaking the tube rectifier selection too if you know what you're doing. Which is a definitely easier than carrying around an autotransformer.

Here's perhaps a silly question: when he says he turns the amp to three, does he mean the digits on the amp or do they actually mean "three o'clock" (like turn the pot to the right hand side if you're standing in front of it)? Thanks for any help!
@richardshank7659
@richardshank7659 3 года назад
They were speaking in regards to clean so 3 on the digit. 3 o clock on those amps and you've far left clean territory. On a tweed it's breaking up pretty heavily at 3 o clock

The champ is class A you don’t really adjust volume as much as you’re adjusting the head room most class A’s have their own sweet spot… both the “Eric Clapton” album and the Derek and the dominos album were recorded with a champ… Clapton’s tone is incredible both dynamic and sparkly at the same time.

Voltage used to be 110, mine right now is 123...
@wamgoc3637
@wamgoc3637 4 года назад
Voltage was rarely 110 back then but 115-117 was what the utilities shot for. 110 was common pre WWII. Voltage creep is because big motors burn out from low voltage, not high and they want to minimize damage to HVAC . In a pro studio they should have a regulated BALANCED feed installed.

I've been lucky enough to have owned two 1959 4 input Tweed Deluxes, at separate times during my career. And I can say that hands down really against all the other amps that I've owned and some have been boutique amps but the list is too long to go through here. But those Fender Tweeds, specifically for me the Deluxe 5e3 are just unbeatable. In fact in one of them I put a Celestian Blue alnico speaker in it and I can say that that was the finest sounding blues rock amp I've ever owned and like I said I've owned a ton of them over the years. So yeah the trick really is not to get much past four or five on the volume otherwise it's just flab city!! Leo certainly knew what he was doing and I actually had a Lupe Lopez assembled Deluxe! Her name was faded but there on the masking tape inside the chassis! She was THE gal when it came to building those old tweeds!

Ok, so he doesn't really understand amps.Just a player's view.And no, a higher power speaker does not fix the tweed circuit.It just makes the bottom end fart sound less prominent.
@AdventuresinBackpacking
@AdventuresinBackpacking 4 года назад
Yes, what you are saying is true, but it's that undefined low end that people love about those amps. Many touring artists do swap the speakers of their old tweeds because they want more overall definition from their tweeds than their original speakers provide.
