scott So the student is NEVER better then the teacher? Really? You sure about that? I can think of a thousand cases where the student surpassed the teacher and this is one of them
Its that serious, swinging groove. Best kind of metal drummer. Vinne Paul had it too but following in Dave's footsteps, same with Gene Hoglan. Totally badass.
Skyclaw very true But Dave did write his own parts I don’t think there is a 1 most talented person in the band Like with Paul slayer isn’t what it was So it’s clear that Kerry and Jeff work better with Dave playing
Yeah it's not easy I played with 2 metal bands back to back a few times which was like an hour 30 mins and I was like 😵💫😵💫 I had to really cherish my in between song time and find a way to lay back while playing. No need to go hard the whole time 😮💨
+Jørn Syversen I always hated watching emotionless drummers. They looked as if they were the shit. Dave is one of the only who express themselves with sticks.
Isis Cruz Really? I've listened to Convent and a little bit of Gateway to Annihilation and some other songs, but I haven't seen any of their live stuff yet. Pete's a beast!
+Gamer 90' I'd say you're right. when I play I love jamming. I'm in my own world. I love playong live and the venues and I love it when people enjoy and like something I created. I like sharing what I play on drums. Just thought I'd share my thoughts.
How the hell does a 50 year old drummer blow most metal drummers in their 20’s off the fucking stage?! Dunno how, but it proves Dave is the best metal drummer ever, he gotta post more videos.
It's about knowing every millisecond of the drum tracks you've created, having played them hundreds of times onstage and getting your muscle memory down to a point where you just don't even think. You can see here that Dave is taking care of every single stroke, every single note carries full meaning. The other commenter mentioned Lars - I'm not a Lars hater, but he plays his own drum tracks as if he's a cover band drummer. He'd do well to just keep it simple and go back to playing what is on the records, rather than making some of the outlandish improvs that he does on the slower songs.
Its because you millennials have no flight time and think you can do it all better than the ones with the experience and effort they put in for years and years to become amazing, and still dare to learn new things. This (me) Gen X-er is putting in a lot of time to make up for the time lost before and after 2.5 years back behind the kit, i still feel i have 10 more to go before i can call my self anywhere near ok. That is how Dave and all the other famous boomer drummers think and a lot of them will blow most good millennial drummers away! Stop being arrogant and start working on you flight schedule.
@@Sawyer4215 He was taught double bass by Gene Hoglan, or at least was given tips on double bass technique :) Not saying this to diminish him in any way.
Naw man, Slayer lives on brother - even if Dave and Jeff aren't on the stage, they live in our hearts and the dudes they have to fill in do just as good - I respect the fact that they are still around and playing, in memory of Jeff and Dave continues to creep back into the lineup - they just need to pay him what he's worth, but the spirit of SLAYER shall always remain regardless of who's playing the tunes - it's a mutual respect from the band and the fans
Been into metal since age 7. Now 47. Mr Lombardo is, without a doubt - NO doubt, the most skillfull, honest, colourfull metaldrummer of all time. NOONE comes up to his standards. He is the ultimate drummer. I've seen him live, shared stages in europe, listen to he's work thru the years. he IS the best.
Dave is one of the most talented, coolest and down to Earth guys I have ever been fortunate enough to meet in my life. He has such a great attitude and is so humble with no ego whatsoever! He is a legend and will always be my favorite drummer. You rule Dave!
@@kaiserwilhelmii1827 cause tons of celebrities are arrogant assholes so when you meet one who is down to earth it's refreshing and makes it very easy to like them.
true, but I have a lot of respect for Paul...saw In an interview where he said that he plays Dave's songs Dave's way out of respect for the fans and for Dave. I've seen them both...he does a damn good job of it
6 years since video was posted and I still watch it at least twice a week. Dave really showed the depths of his skill here. The drumming might seem simple to some, espcecially if you listen to a younger generation of drummers, but the touches and fills especially with the cymbals are unmatched even today. His playing is deceptively complex and the not many drummers can maintain the tempo during fills and then dial it up and down while matching the pace of the song. He might have slowed over the years and perhaps not progressed Ala Gene Hoglan but he remains one of the finest drummers and of the few whose influence will extend beyond the genre
I think he preserved his unique style, the power, speed and intensity all over the years without a bit of downstepping. Even today, if you watch the Metal Allegiance 2020 Slayer medley he did, his power is still here. It is evident he didn't play Slayer songs for a long time now, but he is in very good shape. A true living legend and a monstrous drummer standing high on the throne of the fathers of extreme metal drumming.
I've seen so many amazing metal drummers, so many with varying levels of technicality, groove and creativity that I love and it's hard to pick a favorite. Mario Duplantier Joey Jordison Gene Hoglan Sean Reinert Chris Adler Nick Menza Vinnie Paul Mike Smith Dave Culross But I have never seen ANYONE play with such FEROCITY and PASSION as this man right here. Dave Lombardo.
one of the Best things of Dave is that he always play all songs in a different way, he hits everything differently but in the precise time. always dynamic! Still reign!
as a drummer, and as a fan of dave lombardo's since about 1986-ish....these close up videos of him playing are the best fuckin clips i have EVER seen of lombardo playing. if your a drummer, it captures his style so intimately, the fact that these are not 'PROSHOT' only adds to the intimacy. Its 30 some years later and I still find Dave Lombardo very inspiring. After watching these clips its makes me want to get behind my kit right now.
I can't get enough of this video. The sound is just amazing. There should be an entire concert of just Lombardo cam. I would kill for a drum cam of Unit 731.
As a Cuban myself I approve your comment ... You can't imagine the amount of good percussionists there are in that island ... Check Horacio El negro aka El pulpo cuban percussionist
he doesnt have the single one qualification that it takes to play in Slayer. and that is the solo double bass part in Angel Of Death. He cant play it live.
Blimey I got exhausted just watching this. One of my favourite Slayer songs is Postmortem and the drumming on this is epic. This is watching a master at work. Virtuoso level skills.
There are a lot of good drummers, I presume. Yet I've never heard of anybody who can play rigid thrash metal songs and still retain the sense of groove. There's no one like Dave Lombardo.
At first when i found about Slayer, i thought that he could only play heavy metal. But Dave can literally play anything, and play it well. I love Dave Lombardo!
I've played drums for over 20 years. I can copy most of the great metal drummers, i.e. Peart, Mcbrain, Travis, Anders Johannson, Appice, Burr to name a few. But Lombardo is just way too fast with his feet and some of his fills are just plain wicked and difficult to really nail down. He's on another planet and dare I say the afformentioned drummers probably couldn't play his style either. It was frustrating when I was learning because my younger brother was impressed with my skills in the end but always would say "play some Slayer." To which I would have to say, which no drummer wants to admit, "I can't do it man, the guy is just to freaking fast with his feet." My respect for Lombardo's talent is immense. Your average person just doesn't have a clue the degree of difficulty involved in Lombardo's style of play. As Halford is to singing Lombardo is to speed metal/thrash drumming. He's the original jaw dropper insofar as his speed and overall command of the instrument. I don't even think if I were to spend a few hours with the man himself I could copy him even with him showing me exactly how he's doing it. Some musicians are just Apex predators at their craft and Mr. Lombardo is one of them.
@@alexandrosbagkas Yeah I agree, I find it harder to try and play his level of speed and power with the arm stuff, playing the skank beat he uses in a lot of Slayer songs at those speeds is tricky as there are constant 8th notes on the ride cymbal / hi-hat along with quarters on the snare, as opposed to some metal drummers that just alternate between the cymbal and snare. I can usually do Lombardo's speed on double bass, although I would be nowhere near his level of power. I read an interview with a drummer that saw Lombardo's kit and said the bass drum pedal beaters were back at 90 degree angles for a big stroke to get a powerful sound as he was powerful enough to play it like that. There are certainly metal drummers that do faster double bass stuff these days with more complicated, broken up patterns using all kinds of tricky techniques that will probably take me years to master, but I'm certain most would have been inspired by Lombardo. He certainly inspired me to play metal drums. On another note, I see Slayer is doing their 'final' tour, I would be really excited to see them if it wasn't for Dave no longer playing with them :-\ They did a few UK shows recently, but as mentioned no Dave, no Jeff Hanneman of course and even Lamb of God supporting didn't have Chris Adler with them.
I watch Dave any time I need some inspiration and energy to power through. Thanks Dave for all that you've shared with us. Best regards for 2022 and beyond.
i love dave as a drummer. he has aged like the fine wine. i don't care if he is the fastest or the best. it's his style that most people like. and what stamina.
DofkaTubeChannel when you play that slow you wouldn’t need em but playing in uptempos above 230 bpm it’s necessary to have at least your bassdrums triggered
@@Mr.Boobfart this man plays up to 230 bpms and still has enough power to rock an open air show. while those guys that go above 230 bpm are just slightly tapping the bass drum.
@@Mr.Boobfart bro i play electronic drums and acoustic drums. and you eventually start hitting the drums with less power because it makes you satisfied with the volume. but if you practice with an acoustic kit, you have to make it sound loud. otherwise it will sound like crap and bass drums will not be audible.
He is the best because of his sheer talent and attitude, even if he was getting ripped off, he did it for the fucking LOVE of music - so much respect for this man.
I was at this show. Absolutely incredible. Dave is my favorite metal drummer hands down. So much groove and feel for a guy playing in a band like Slayer.
I never get tired of watching this, i love how he looks so happy, the little smiles at the camera, like hey! I wish i was that happy at my job, lol...He kills it every time, the fn best!
I’m just telling you I’ve been playing over 30 plus years can play rush dream theater of course all the other metal one lamb of god and so fourth but this guys style is so unique I just can’t do it I’ve watched this video a thousand times in awwww of what he can do truly amazing and definitely the best metal drummer ever in my book !
I had to learn die by the sword off show no mercy coming out of break down going into guitar solo Dave comes in on the and beat and to nail it perfect was so hard I was always late or early so frustrating I love everything about this dude their guitar sound with daves Tamas is perfect sound
Bostaph is a top-five thrash drummer... but no one plays like Lombardo. Feels his way through the song and rides out of those insane fills into perfect rhythms. So insane.
I have played guitar most of my life.... but whenever I hear Lombardo with Slayer his beats and grooves are absolutely a War Call. The guy is arguably the most influential heavy metal drummer of his generation but also for me the best drummer to ever play in the Metal genre.
This is insane man....This man is a machine... This man is a robot... no way he is a human being... The God of Drums... the best drummer of all time... absolutely...
