Very good song! And the acoustic versions of it are great, too. Dave Matthews' voice is one of the most recognizable voices I've ever heard. Great! Awsome!
he's basically saying that i wanna feel the rain when i die... meaning he wants to be in connect with this world.. in the case of his dad 1940-1992 it is he (DM) who is the connect... in him his father lives on... amazing stuff this is poetry
I love this video so much. I have walked through graveyards many times and seen the tombstones of people I didn't know, and wondered who they were and what happened to them. This encompasses those feelings. It's a great song and one of the best rock videos, ever, in my opinion.
This whole album grew on me until it became one of my favorites. Today is the first time I've seen the video; pretty heavy stuff because it makes me look at the inevitability of death in my own life, and how it ends for everybody. Nobody gets out alive. Powerful, very.
This is such a profound song, and I can understand the irony, my father was killed in Iraq by a car bomb, only days after i added this song. It's not in my favorites anymore, because of the pain that it causes, but on the anniversary of his death i listen to it, and i can almost feel him with me.

Actually some people get confused because they think that Willie Nelson wrote the song. Matthews wrote and released it in 2003 and, in 2007, Nelson released his version. In 2008-2010, Nelson showed up in some of the DMB concerts and sang and played this song along with the band.
I cannot see why some folks don't see the value in both versions of this song. By "views" count, Willie's version is getting twice the play. I don't think that either version is dominant over the other though. GREAT song. Period. I wish Frank Sinatra was alive to do a version. Thank you, Dave.
A very common misconception. Having been alive is also something we all have in common - not to be confused with living or being alive. You cannot have one (death) without the other (having been alive). However, there are also many other things we all have in common... which you will learn if you grow wiser as you grow older.
wow, he mensioned every experience in this world, "pocket full of rosies, etc" means the black plague, the little childern would sing it during the bubonic plague, he mensions world wars, slavery, eastern european conflicts. very very emotional stuff
love the song. i "think" what he's singing about is everyone has problems. however, if we choose not to heal and forgive these bad experiences we'll just get deeper into despair creating nothing good for ourselves. imo

Ah, I wonder if his children (twin girls 7 and a 1 year boy) have any 'inkling' of how lucky they are to have parents who nurture and support them in such a loving way. They don't but they'll greatly benefit. I love this guy too. I can tell he's a 'good soul'.
he didn't say that willie hasn't made classics, just that dave mathews version was the "classic" gravedigger and that he didn't care for the remake. personally i can't stop listening to either right now.

Imagine walking through a cemetary, and seeing the names and dates of those who have lived and died. What were their lives like? Who did they leave behind? That's the basis of the "story" he's telling, along with singing about all of our own mortality.
this is such a brilliant song - beautiful voice, lyrics and music, just gives you goosebumps. Although I must say I prefer the acoustic version, it seems even more powerful, the music doesn't distract you from the voice and lyrics.
That mumbling is during a viewing of the video in a studio/editing room where the artist, in this case Dave is watching it. It happens alot if your a filmmaker (which I am). During the viewing he made comments about it. "Wow, isn't that beautiful?" He commenting of Ellen Kuras Cinematography work. She's the Director of Photography on this video. Someone in the control room 'hit' the record button during playback. It's cool. As a filmmaker, it what you want to here your client say.
