I buried my son in 2010 after him losing his fight with Cerebral Palsy and this song touches my heart. You Naysayers can just step back and let parents like me have something like this song help us find closer. OK!

My grandmother died to cancer yesterday. Her name was Judith Crook and she died at 73... 73 is forever when you're just a little kid, so Judith Crook lived forever... She was outlived by my great-grandmother. You should never have to bury your own babies...

My grandma never let me listen to this song when I was younger. As an adult, I see a song that celebrates the fragility of life and in doing so celebrates life itself. It is not eternal, our walk on this planet, and it is precious, perhaps even sacred. We are each a unique individual, with our own talents, hopes and dreams, and all I see is a song that celebrates our wild, and unpredictable experience called life.

I know that loving slow, emotional songs like these make me seem like a depressed person, and that when I play them people yell at me to play happier songs, but it's like this kind of music touches hearts the most. Or at least it gives me the illusion that it reaches through my emotionless fog to touch my heart.

@@darnellpistachio2991 yes they could've been. Let's say she had 2 kids when she was about 20, that's 1923, and then 20 years later her kids of age to go to war that's 1943. WW2 started in 1939 and ended in 1945.

No one in my immediate family (mom, dad, brother, sister, daughter) has lived to the age of 60. I will be 59 somewhere around February 28/March 1 (I'm a leap year child Feb. 29). I have left instructions to have this played at my funeral. Dave Matthews whales "Gravedigger" as if it blows from his soul...

Dave has such passion, just love his expression here- You should never have to watch as your own child is lowered in the ground, I mean never bury your own babies.... This song reminds me of a poem I read once in high school. It was about the man who carved the stones, but realized how much people doctored the truth about a person when they died. It's very moving.

In my opinion, this is raw Dave Matthews. it's my understanding that he had a pretty hard upbringing in South Africa. He has also said that his lyrics and his music get a lot of their influence from his childhood. Life can be rough at times and I think this music video does a fantastic job depicting how people (namely Dave) see death and loss of life. Also, if anything I think this song can also be seen as an anti war song. Great work. Tim on guitar at the end is the best way to wrap up the song

The song is talking about when a person dies you bury them but not so deep to where you forget about them completely so that when you think of them they will be able to feel your tears (the rain)

I couldn't agree more... I also like songs that strike to the core. Genre doesn't matter it's the artist who matters, and you can tell when a song has meaning by the vocals and the music. Though i do listen to some "happy" or "light-hearted" music, because a balance is good. I have a song for almost every event or mood.
