In this video I react to the Dave Ramsey clip where he calls anyone that works multiple remote jobs is a thief and a liar. What do you think? Is it unethical to work two full time remote jobs? Is it stealing from your employer if both companies you work for are completely satisfied with your work?

@@rikkiw8231 The expectation would be (for a salaried position) to put in 8 hours worth of work. Think of it as piece rate, not as hourly. Why do twice the amount of work as your coworker because you're twice as fast, while getting paid the very same wage? @@cw48494 Yeah I get where this is coming from. But if you can do more than your coworkers you should do more to learn more and take on more responsibilities. And then ask to get paid more for your productivity. If the company can’t recognize your value output then it’s not really a good company to work for. All this being said the precursor is to find a fulfilling job and not to waste life on work that you honestly don’t care about. That is so true! I grew up listening to Save Ramsey on the radio and he always said to do the most to get out of debt. Funny how his idea of doing the most is actually not necessary (main job + weekend job), but the is against the modern version (WFM allowing the possibility of overlap on the same days, taking on work when you’re finished your salaried tasks). He’s living in the 90s. He probably still thinks robots are going to take our jobs too 😂 Physical labour jobs, jobs that trade money for time (like retail), are changing. The industries have evolved so much beyond that, it doesn’t make sense to force someone to sit and do nothing when their tasks are completed, and they can use that energy to make money elsewhere.
@GreenThumb27
@GreenThumb27 2 года назад
Dave is 100% wrong on this! You were hired and paid to complete your daily tasks for the company. You are not paid for your time! When Accounting completes their tasks for the day and cannot address future tasks, do they walk down to IT and start helping them? No, absolutely not. Its a dumb idea and everyone knows it, but that is what is expected by the company with the mindset of "paying for your time". And second, we have deemed it as a human right for 40 hours to be considered a full work week for the average employee. Anything outside of these hours are meant for the employee to do whatever they damn well please. The company does not get to dictate 100% of my waking time. I completely understand there are exceptions to every rule but even as a lawyer, synonymous with working long hours still has boundaries. That remaining time is still yours to do with.

that is a great working arrangement - win/win for both employer and employee, almost like a contractor, you’re being paid by the outcome not the hours, however in reality most contract are hour based, so having two full time jobs at 40/week, you would need to work 80 hours you are being paid for otherwise it would be a breach of contract - results and target achievements are separately handled via bonus payments. I work full time according to contract and freelance on the side to avoid this contractual conflict…

@djamilawilschke7259
@djamilawilschke7259 Год назад
i think it’s less to do with loyalty, but with the actual employment contract someone signs - most are hourly based and the salary reflects exactly this, results are being paid separately if there are bonus payments. so loyalty is irrelevant when you’re having 2 40hr/week contracts and do not work consistently 80 hours per week which would mean a breach of contract - you need to pay attention to what you sign off for. i avoid it by having and working my full time job + freelance outside those contracted working hours…

Dave is being a little tongue and cheek here. He knows exactly the reason why he doesn’t like OverEmployed remote workers. The main reason why Employers don’t like you having 2 jobs is it screws up their ability to retain you for long term if you’re not poor and need them. Also your earning a executive salary while being a junior engineer they have no control over you and you can start your own business. Companies purposely want to pay you poor wages to enslave you to them or other jobs so you’ll never gain to their social class. So I laugh when dave is talking about love. I would rebuttal him and ask instead “why do you want to control your worker and pay their flight?” The worker could easily either get paid what their worth for their own flight or either get 2-3 WFH jobs and cover it themselves? The answer clear employers want you under their thumb and control and their mad at the younger generation for not wanting to be enslaved by calling us lazy cause they wasted their time for nothing.

@MrEdrftgyuji Год назад
You see this across the board. This is why so many jobs require you to live in high cost-of-living areas. This is also why companies campaign for *higher* taxes. Dave uses typical “Boomer Logic”. This is in no way meant as an insult. Because the thing is, his generation grew up in a different world. In this world employees and employers had an understanding between each other. If you worked hard and went the extra mile, they would reward you with bonuses, promotions, etc. Maybe the company Dave runs is still like that. I don’t know. But what I do know is that in 2023, 98% of employers don’t operate that way. You as an employer are just a number to them. If it is profitable to keep you where you are, they will keep you and take advantage of your loyalty. But once it is no longer profitable to keep you, they will get rid of you. With that in mind, isn’t it only logical to treat your employer as a number? Because like they say, “nothing personal, only business”. All people like me and the author of this video are saying is that it is time to get with the program.

Additionally, If you have a second job, you will naturally be less afraid of being fired, demoted, not being able to pay bills etc. and fear is one of the linchpins in an employers playbook to keep you working as hard as they can while underpaying you.

It's VERY easy to speak from a position of an employer that is already financially free to say to EMPLOYEES you shouldn't do this when you don't have to worry about being behind in your financial independence, speeding up your monetary goals, and giving up even more of your personal time to hit those goals. It's not about the employer, it's about the employee's needs to do what makes THE MOST sense for their household & financial goals. It's greedy to expect families to give everything (time, energy, and focus) to 1 company, it's absolutely asinine and greedy. Humans are not monolithic, grow up DR lol

They don’t care unless you’re working the 2 jobs at the same time. The times can’t overlap, otherwise it breaches potential policies that you agreed to follow, when you signed them. And in those onboarding documents it says that if found in violation the worse thing would be adverse legal action. There are also clauses in these contracts you sign during on boarding that specifically state you are not allowed to delegate your work to 3rd parties. So it really depends on the clauses in the contracts you sign, but if are working 2 jobs and you signed the legal documents with those clauses, then you are in breach of contract. :/ so just be careful people. Might be possible for some but companies are making sure to put these clauses in because people are popularizing over employment so now it’s on their radar.

WHAT ABOUT... An employer hires you. Upon arrival, they give you eight hours of work based on what others complete in their shifts. However, where your coworkers are able to (for example) type 35-45 words per minute, you are 120+ words per minute and you are able to finish your 8 hours work in 3.5 hours. So, you do other things. Your employer finds you and says when you're done with your work you ask for more, but your coworkers struggle to get done in time. WHAT'S THE FAIR SOLUTION?

Just an opinion, if you are being paid for time - then yes you could be stealing, but if you are paid for your expertise then only the deliverables are what matters. The flip side of this is if you are paid for expertise and you lack in some area and you put in extra time to fill in the gap you are working "overtime" for "free".
@db3281
@db3281 Год назад
If you are paid in expertise, and lack in an area needing extra time to fill in the gap, perhaps you are not entirely qualified for the position. An employer shouldn't be expected to pay overtime for your, perhaps undisclosed, deficiencies.
@TheIgory1
@TheIgory1 Год назад
@@db3281 I worded that last sentence poorly. I meant that when you have to put in extra work for an expert position, the employer will not pay extra for that, because it is expected of you. From the employee perspective, they work more without getting more. It is the other side of being paid for the job, not time. There is likely no expert that knows everything, and because of this it is a give and take relationship. So when you complete tasks quicker you gain time for possible overemployment, or if you lack in an area, you lose time to catch up.

The biggest argument that I hear is that “you are salaried therefore your expected to work the occasional night and weekend”. Employers do not care about your time when it benefits them. You will get the same paycheck no matter how many hours you work if you have a salary. But then, when they find out that you have a second job, it’s all “you’re stealing from the company that’s company time you’re dipping your pen in company ink.“ if you ask me, I think that if a company is going to ask for more of your time without extra pay, then you have just as much of a right to get more pay for your extra time.

If an employer paying someone to work 40 hours a week, the person should work for the company 40 hours a week. Early in my career I had an entry level job and I found ways to get the work done more efficiently. I asked my boss for additional work but was told to just "look busy". So, I "looked busy" for about 25% of the time in that position. I felt I did my part by asking my boss for more assignments. I ended up getting a promotion with more duties and a much larger compensation package. If an employer learns that an employee is doing all the work required in half the time, it wouldn't be unreasonable for the employer to reassess the position and cut staff in order to save money so maybe the employer is to blame to a degree. If you are being paid an employee by the hour, you are to only work for that employer during that time. That is part of being an employee. Being an employee makes you not subject to self-employment tax and other benefits. Every job I have worked has ALWAYS had in the job description, "Other duties as assigned". If you are working as a contractor then you are likely working more on a project base and paid on a 1099. The company paying you doesn't have as much control over you. You are viewed as self-employed, which comes with certain advantages and disadvantages. Contractors have the ability to work for more than one company. I don't know that I would call you a "thief" but I don't know that your employers would approve what you are doing. It might be interesting for you to ask both HR Departments if what you are doing is OK. See what they say and post it. Maybe HR is impressed enough to offer you a nice promotion where you are working for one company and making much more than working for two? You won't lose any sleep over my opinion but I tend to agree with Dave on this one.

Dave is a privileged boomer. Most people who try the unorthodox stuff are those of us who cannot do it the orthodox way. In a city where I live the average house price is over a million. Only young people with rich parents can afford to put together 200k deposit. I told my friends we have to be a little creative cause we will never make it the orthodox way, ie college, job, promotion, save deposit , buy a house. Never. So I have been doing 2 jobs, using one to save for a deposit and actually have a small side gig on top that covers gas, power and phone bills. Tiring but it is the only way. Once I reach my goal I will start to relax a little. Dave and most upper middle class folks won't understand. At all.

@@last_samurai6690 I have NOTHING against working a side job. I have done it in the past to get rid of debt. It isn't easy and takes a strong work ethic. My problem with this person is that they are doing two full time jobs at once. As an employer, if I am paying an employee an hourly wage then they are to work for ME ALONE when they are on my clock. If they finish early, I expect them to let me know or at least "look busy". As I stated above, an employee is much different from an independent contractor. Sounds like you live in an expensive city. I bought outside of the city I live in. I have a longer drive into work but my house would have cost me double what I paid for an "average" house. Had I went with a smaller starter house, I would have saved more. Yes, the drive gets old but I go in early/leave early to avoid traffic. I also work from home, on occasion. Maybe you try living further out and have a starter house, build some equity, and then as your career develops you can use that additional salary and equity on the starter house outside of city to get you where you want to be now. It just might take time.

honestly this is a tough one - the video states multiple times 2 or 3 “full time” remote jobs, as much as i like or dislike the way employment contracts are based on, most full time jobs are hour/week based and possible contain a bonus for outcome / achievements. so there is usually no question as to what the company expects from me it should all be in the contract, if it’s 40/week including some vacation and sick days, then this is what needs to be worked. 2 of those jobs would require as per contract 80 hours/week consistently. So unless it’s not a result driven contract like contractors are working who do not have vacation or sick leave days, it is a breach of contract not offering the work you’re supposed to do. the intention is simply to work and deliver as much and as best as you can within this timeframe, working less means you deliver less than you could have. I work freelance on the side outside of my contractual 40 hours per week and avoid mentioning it simply because I believe it will be very easy to always suspect me to not to my best job and be distracted, even though i strictly separate one from the other…from employer’s perspective it is easy to think the freelance work will get the better part of me …
