The Dave Smith Instruments Prophet 08 has been a mainstay in both our live and studio rig for many years now. It is one of the very few truly analog, modern, polyphonic synths and its tone, compact size, and instant playability contribute to the reason why we've used it time and time again.
However, we've always been puzzled why in certain parts of the web, the 08 catches a bad rap. It is neither thin, nor harsh, unless of course you want it to be. It has a wonderful brassy tone characteristic that can instantly remind of the Oberheim OB8, but with the dynamics, tightness, and bravado innate to the best Sequential Circuits offered in their heyday.
These are all our custom INHALT patches we've programmed on the Prophet and recorded straight into Pro Tools HD in stereo. You'll notice on some sections that there is strong modulation on the panning and that comes courtesy of the "Pan Spread" parameter on the 08. Absolutely no external effects processors or MIDI was used. It's just what you can do on board the synth with either straight playing or employing the step sequencer and arpeggiator built into the Prophet! I love my Pro '08. I think the people who dislike it simply don't know how to program it. It has phenomenal range.

totally agree with you!!! the filter is really juicy, and the synth has a great personality . It can be fat, obese ,gentle ,aggressive. Only it needs to be programmed ,and people need to go further the presets .Keep turning these knobs

@ROOTSCONTRA I know what you mean, I already had three different Rev2s, always sold them again.. but now I listen to an album I recorded with it, and in the mix, with guitars, singing, drums and others synths, it sounds really good. I actually regret selling it now. Sometimes signals on solo sound weak, but in a mix, they fit in very well. Yes, filter is a bit screamy, but you don´t have to use too much resonance.

The sounds in this video give me heavy nostalgia. Got the Prophet 08 a few years back and it's still my favorite polysynth. It just has a character that sounds exactly like what I want my synth to sound like whether it's rough and bright, or soft and mellow.

I ordered a rev2 3 days ago. Can't wait till it gets here. I think the people that talk shit about this synth are just mad that the masses can now more easily afford a beautiful analog synth. There pissed it's not limited to the elect few willing to give up transportation or a wife to buy one.

@ROOTSCONTRA It's unfortunate that you are so disappointed with the Prophet 08. It never impressed me either, because it always sounded somewhat 'cold & more 'digital' than any of Dave's other analogue synths. However, I am impressed by the Prophet Rev.2., because it sound 'beefier', has more character, and sounds more 'analogue' IMHO.

Lovely patches - I had this synth for over 3 months but still have mixed feelings about it. It has a narrow range of sounds (where it excels), and I've struggled to make rich, plucky sounds (lack of sub-osc) and smooth velvet tones. The cutoff filter has a particular sound that sometimes doesn't convince me. Maybe it is because I still don't know how to program it? Maybe it's just its character. Although the sound architecture is quite intuitive and straightforward, sometimes I lose control of the sound, and I can't achieve what I have in mind. Any suggestions for getting the most out of this synth are welcome.

How alike is the Rev2? This sounds very nice and you can usually get it a fair bit cheaper than a rev2 on the used market. The only downside maybe is lack of USB but I guess midi-to-usb dongles aren't the end of the world. And maybe the keyboard. I heard Dave and team changed keyboards to a more premium design for the rev2 and the rest of his modern lineup.

Really trying to decide between this and a 06. I like the fact that you can split the keyboard and layer sounds on this one but the sound on the 06 seems more rich. Although I do love the beauty of no menu diving I'm not sure how a single sound synth with no menu like the 06 would be practice in a live situation when you need to call sounds up on the fly.

Also can you transpose the step sequencer on the fly on either of these? That's a strong selling point for me because not many synths can do that save for thr Moog Sub 37

EverettDudgeon138 The Sub 37 sounds way better than this! I'd take the Prophet 6 over the 08 any day, but I'm not even convinced the 6 sounds all that either. The moog sounds great though.

well why not take that idea to the extreme and use a 128 poly crappy soft synth? do you want GREAT sound or spec? or if you want both then you need to look at better polyphonics than the 08. A new poly moog based on the Sub 37 would be great. I only mentioned the Sub 37 because you did btw, it has a great character and beautiful filter, the complete opposite of the Prophet 08. I think if you want a great sounding poly analog without breaking the bank you'd be better buying an 80s Roland (DCO) or a VCO Polysix for example. If you are not too fussy about ultimate sound then the Prophet 08 is a fine keyboard of course and can make lots of good sounds, I just don't like its sound enough to pay £1600 for one!

EverettDudgeon138 Matters if you want a mono or a poly, second of all 3 synths have their own character pick one fits into your needs, I own the Prophet 06 great synthesizer LOVE it, I also love the sound of the Prophet 08 I know alot of people don't enjoy the Curtis filter but I love that punch sound,, with modulation routing you can make it sound great, it does have it's limitations, man it's your money buy what you want to buy.

I’m wondering if you can get pretty much the same sounds out of the pro2 obviously with the sacrifice of less voices, it has both the prophet filter and the SEM filter so I have a feeling that you can
