It is so cool, that he evolving constantly. My first ever drum video school was his "Back to basics" and "The next step". And even he was one of the tops he changed his technique so much! And was like "Ok, that was a mistake, now I do it like this". And few years later "Ok, I was wrong again, that's how i do it now". That make so much sence, that all our techniques and methods are fluid and changing over time, and if something is not working anymore - do not be afraid to change it. Thank's Dave!

@@administration8961 One of in light of the fact that there is no greatest since no single drummer has it over on all others in every aspect of drumming. No one is a better Vinnie than Vinnie, just as no one is better at being Buddy than Buddy. Who can do what Virgil Donati does better than Virgil? Chris Coleman? And so on down the line. We must give credit where credit is due. Peace...
@BaconIsNotBiceps
@BaconIsNotBiceps Год назад
@@Smittyschannel Not really, buddy. He is factually "one" of the greatest. Had I said "THE" greatest, then that specificity relegates the statement to subjectivity, but the generality of the statement and the fact that he is technically more proficient than most who have ever lived makes it a factual reality. He's on many of the top drummers of all-time lists to boot. We can factually state that some athletes are bigger, stronger, faster, etc than others. The same applies to music and drumming. Not many can come close to what Dave does. Actual drummers know this fact. I'm a huge Neil Peart fan and even I had to explain to a friend one day why Neil wasn't even close to Weckl in ability. He just wouldn't believe me until I posted the Sabian cymbal ad that Weckl, Peart, Portnoy and Bozzio did together where Neil literally thanked Dave for giving them all a lesson after each had played and Weckl had just finished playing. Bozzio was dumbstruck and told Weckl that it was hard to even focus on the cymbals because of how amazing Dave played. There are levels to every game. Weckl is cream of the crop.

Dave is one of the greatest drummers to walk this earth!! I had the privilege of meeting him and actually hanging out for 15-20 minutes with him... IMAC Theater Long Island NY After he and Steve Smith had put on a Clinic.. Steve went first Dave Finished and after the show he was standing in the lobby by himself waiting for a ride.. My wife and I walked up and it was just US!! We talked for about 20 min.. just regular conversation! OK I did ask him to sign my tickets which he very graciously did... Just a Super nice guy!! and a Living legend!!

My observation is that it is quite easy to find the balance point with (new) Vic-Firth sticks: Grab the stick where the American flag is printed. On Dave's signature stick, the point is clearly further to the front than on the Steve Gadd signature stick. And in fact, Dave Gadd grips his sticks farther back, so the stick almost ends up with the heel of his hand. For me, that's important when playing in a suit. If the stick is too far back when playing, you can easily get caught in the sleeve, with matched grip even left and right!

In my mind, when I'm listening I still see the guy from the Buddy Rich Memorial Concert... I was 13 when that went down. I look at the screen and then the mirror... And it took a really long time to start hearing it main stream, for some reason everybody thought it was first finger and thumb. Excellent warm up ideas, Tanks

Hello friends of Vic Firth, we had met during a Dom Famularo seminar in Paris and I had sympathized with Mr. Vic Firth who left us...Dave Weckl, for me is really, in addition to being the great musician that we know, a superb teacher! He was interested in all the details of the drums, playing and also positions to avoid pathologies ... He is really a great "Maestro" of the drums (I had met him during the Yamaha drumshow with my friend the drummer French André Ceccarelli.) I played in different styles of music (including jazz organist Rhoda Scott and with many other artists) I was a conservatory teacher and author of a method; "groove bass-battery with a bassist: Pascal Sarfati". I send you all my friendships friends of Vic Firth, a single will soon see the day, "Charleston" "the crazy years" or I sing in SCAT! you will see this in a few weeks on youtube ...God bless you.+

Outstanding and pre eminent output & history, especially with Corea. The Electrik Band was never usurped, so other than what Jay Oliver has added to the Weckl Brand, the urgency & importance of Weckl has diminished. And that is not the only sad reality-when watching this ;)

This man comes at a close second to Buddy Rich in the "Great drummers of all time" category. My personal opinion but I highly doubt my mind can be changed about that. This man was and still is incredibly inspirational to who I am as a drummer (and I'm 27 and have been drumming since I was 7, so 20 years), and every time I watch him be it live or on RU-vid, it's always mind blowing to see what this man does. He and Dennis Chambers were my two favourite drummers when I was growing up.

Dave's concepts are so important. It's why in my humble opinion he is the best there is (of course even he would argue for others, not meant to offend). Warming up with doubles and singles accenting melodies is key. Too many concentrate on rudimentary speed when making the kit sound good is more important. Without that you just sound washed out and no one appreciates constant 64th note fills.
