Dave Weckl with Oz Noy - Just Groove Me 

People are all talking about Weckl and Oz Noy, but man Michael Rhodes is laying it down on that bass. Dude is a total beast.

I've been listening to Dave for 25 years and he still makes me sick. So clean and tasteful. Top 5 of my list.

I hate it when people start drum debates about who's the best drummer. People, shut up and enjoy the music.

I have Dave Weckl to thank for motivating me into taking drum lessons. A friend had suggested I go to see this guy. Well I'd never been to a drum clinic before & I'd never heard of this guy from the States before either. I went to see Dave at a drum clinic in Brisbane, Australia around about 1990. I was really, really impressed with how good he was. In question time I asked him. What were the steps you took to become such a good drummer? He replied - Taking drum lessons - learning to read music - learning drum rudiments & studying and becoming competent at (not just learning a little of) as many different genres of music & drumming styles as possible. The very next day I looked in the phone book & found Col Gillies Rudimental Drum School & took 2 lessons a week for about a year & a half. I then did a full time course at the Institute of Music in Sydney. So here's to you Dave. Thanks for those inspiring words at that clinic, I wouldn't be 1/5th as good a drummer, if I hadn't taken your advice that day :)

I love how mr. Noy is as funky and groovy as a guitarplayer could ever dream of, yet nothing in the way he mooves suggests that he is doing anything more funky, than solving a word-puzzle.

The more I listen the more i realize the greatness off Dave Weckl's playing. his drumming style is so smooth.

Played in college with Dave. He was a monster then, and he's even a bigger monster now.

Weckl's unbelievable! Saw him in clinic years ago and he blew us away with his left hand technique. He has such command of the kit. Smooth and creative.

Dave's mesmerizing ability to keep us at the edge of our screens just to see what he does next, unbelievable drummer. Simply the BEST!

I love this guitarist man...very inventive with the rotary accents, etc...not to mention he's got some pretty filthy bop style chops in his back pocket

Why is this disliked? Clueless people. I'm not a jazz guy but Dave just kills it, plain and simple.

Very gifted drummer; Dave seriously pushes the envelope in Fusion/Jazz drumming and truly set the bar very high. I am saying this as an educated drummer who has been playing for approximately 50 years now.

Dave is the 2nd best drummer in the whole wide world and i love and admire that man more than life.

Weckl's gotta be one of the most versatile and tasteful drummers around... a real groove-master.

I love how Dave goes on the "And" of the beat towards the beginning of his solo and stays there until the last 2 beats of the solo.

i came here to watch dave weckl (and he was awesome here) but man oz noy and rhodes killed it too.

Only 3-4 mins of solo but one of best I've heard from him, and backed up brilliantly by a great guitar and bass groove. Every drummer is different (and how cool is that) but Wecksy is the only one who for me most closely resembles a drumming volcano: he builds and builds and builds his solos and then completely explodes the last 2 mins in a way that makes my jaw dislocate itself from its socket and drop to the floor. There's no pain, just wonder and pure fist-in-the-air I-want-more joy. This solo one is no exception. Masterful.

It's great to see Dave Weckl just laying a straight rock groove and then letting the Dave Weckl come out at the end and then do what he does like no one else....He's one of a kind!

After seeing Dave play several times, he has motivated me to take the drums a step further!! Great drummer for sure!!!

Still listen to this every once in a while. Love this recording!

Oz Noy is a musical genius !

Dave just blows me away every time. This tune really show's off his ability to build thousands of solos, that groove like hell and allowing for each to sound a little different than the last. He is and always will be my Jazz hero!

Mr. Weckl a real force from nature, an artist on music, sound, time perception and full nuances of performance... Mr. Weckl is a live archetype of contemporary drum playing. Always evolving and inspiring us. A really Mthrfckr from the excelence.

I've listened to Dave since I was 4. I could recognize his sweet fills if he were playing a mile away, during a thunderstorm, on a train, and the train was filled with gun violence.

This is absolutely without a doubt what the original Traditional Grip is all about absolutely astonishing with the left hand speaking softly with ghost notes thru out this this beautiful composition all so very smoothly with hands floating thru the air like butterfly wings so cool & graceful like a true Master as he sits down on a Masterpiece 2 the Drum Set his canvas & his sticks painting a very lovely picture of so much brilliance with impeccable & outstanding Artistry, Skill, Focus & Workmanship. This my friends is what the true nature & definition of what playing a real Drum Set is all about because they are your voice while your hands are doing the speaking 2 all those that want 2 listen 2 what TUBS are really all about. It seems to me that Weckl just gets better every time he plays. Which means that whenever you hear him, it'll be him playin the best he ever played.

If you can't feel this groove it might be you who has no feel... Dave has an extensive background in latin drumming which is to me the most feel orientated music inside its complexity...

Watched this so many times, and have been so fortunate to see Oz and Dave both together and apart many times. Dave is by far the most musical drummer on the planet for his genre (I would say Vinnie has a slight edge in versatility). But just watch Dave in this video when he supports Oz in his solo...just fills it in with more cymbal and snare fills as Oz progressively takes it up several notches, and every beat in place-incredible. Then there's the drum solo...

Saw Weckl at Jazz Alley in Seattle a few years back. He was playing with a good group but we specifically came for Weckl. Got there late but to our surprise the last couple tables still available were the closest tables to the drum kit. It was amazing watching him jam from just a couple feet away. Talked to him a bit after the show too. Nice guy

The only comment this thread is missing is the old "well, he sure as hell ain't no Buddy Rich" chestnut. I saw Weckl at a clinic+concert back in '98 and took home knowledge that impacts my drumming to this day. What a phenom. It's amazing what Freddie Gruber was able to do for guys like Steve Smith and Dave Weckl; he helped them transform their playing. So loose and bouncy.
