I didn’t see Star Wars until I was a teenager. My first proper sci-fi experience was this movie. When I saw Transformers unfolding out of nothing for the first time it was already old news for me. Anubis and Ra did it first.
i was somewhat the same in this regard. As a kid (about 8-10), i saw star gate, followed by star wars (original trilogy), and then the first 3 star trek TMP movies. Suffice to say, sci-fi has never really quite held up to the standard that i was initially presented with, ever since then.
Seing the Station is a magic moment. To think there are humans up there among the stars is truly inspiring. If all goes well by 2024 we will begin our settlement on our moon and Mars by 2030.
This soundtrack was supposedly given to the world through the real Stargate many decades ago. The movie was apparently made AROUND this magnificent music of the spheres. Heavenly music. Almost out of place it's so epic.
Zimmer has kinda got back to his roots, now that he's not doing DC superhero scores anymore. Dunkirk's score was a return to form. And while BR2049 is very much a synth score...I'll give that a pass, because I mean it's fucking Blade Runner.
Wow, I can't tell you how much I miss music like this. It moved the anticipation and expectations of the movie to a very high level. There was another technical aspect of this movie that also separated it from other movies of that time, the great cinematography. The folks who put this production together did it brilliantly. I miss those days of true creativity.
The wonders of past music still continue to inspire even to this day. Such amazing music can he written, and yet people never try to make music like this anymore. Truly a timeless work of art. When will the world realize that this is the music we're missing most. The power of an orchestra working together to make art with their instruments together.
We don't have music like this anymore is because the generations growing up now are to self absorbed no it all talentless and lacking any inspiration or mental fortitude and quite frankly the intelligence to appreciate let alone compose a complex orchestral arrangement
i was born too late. i missed the release of all my favourite series. (stargate and star trek) im still watching them today. though the fanbase is very small
David gave a live concert in Dublin in january and I was lucky enough to hear this live with an amazing choral performance. Worthwhile going to his show which I believe is going to be on in a few places in the UK
I was there, it was fantastic - here are some of the audience members' tweets about how fab it was storify.com/DGAconcerts/david-arnold-live-in-concert-dublin :) He's got a concert coming up in Manchester on 14 April 2015 and then a few more in June in London, Birmingham and Nottingham.
Michael Giacchino's pretty damn good - his Star Trek theme's fantastic. Plus I want Arnold to return to Bond. None of your lightweight Thomas Newman shite. He's a good composer but his action scoring is weak.
The Concise Statement Yeah, Bond just isn't the same without David Arnold. I like Thomas Newman, but he is not a good fit for Bond, his style is VERY wrong for it. They really need to get David Arnold back.
John Caudill hey! If you get this message I’m working on a restore project and I want to make this song appear in the Jurassic park opening just plz subscribe to my channel and I’ll be uploading it soon!!!
As a musician, I started thinking about why I love this sound track so much. I came up with several things: the constant shifting between major and minor keys gives a fluid uneasiness and sense of anticipation; great melodies!!!! you can't get them out of your head; the orchestration, particularly the oboe in octaves with another instrument (not sure which one) gives an Egyptian feel and oriental exoticness; parts of the score unleashes the power of the orchestra... what a brass section!!! and the use of choral in spots gives the music an other worldliness
I remember watching this movie for the first time and being absolutely amazed at the effects and this very soundtrack. I would sometimes just listen to this opening and let my imagination run wild. What if I could travel to other planets through a gate like that... what if...
+sonnyblack0870 I know it's unfortunate. I was born in 97 but I still am familiar with the 90's soundtracks. They are indeed more epic! It's sad to see what's become of the film industry
+sonnyblack0870 what are you talking about? this soundtrack is epic... but the lord of the rings too, national treasure, the da vinci code movie soundtrack? ... ehm... seriously... :D
+Daniel Delgado As grand in volume Lord of The Rings' music is, it's not as melodiously creative as Stargate's soundtrack. Howard Shore's themes are generally very basic- like The Fellowship theme. Not to say the score has no truly great moments, 'cause it sure does. But they don't make music like this so often anymore. The Batman films are a perfect example of this point. The older Batman films, particularly the 1989 one, had great, melodic music. You could hum along to the tracks. Like so many of John Williams' themesongs. These new Batman movies? Amazing music, yes, but not that same quality of a complete track. Hard to explain, I don't quite have the technical terminology.
Bimfirestarter Although I do agree with most of your points, I do however think the LOTR soundtrack was one of the greatest soundtracks ever made, along with Stargate. Movie soundtracks are not just about melody. There is much more to them than just melody. This is where Howard Shore did a great job. His soundtrack includes brilliant use of different exotic instruments, his orchestrations are almost perfect (I think), although some of his melodies are simple, they are very modern in construction and show perfectly his style. I could go on and on about Howard Shore's LOTR. Soundtracks these days are different. Many don't really contain any leitmotifs, and if they do they are weak. A lot of new soundtracks are really simple. I mean too simple. I don't get any thing from them except background music, and contrary to popular belief, soundtracks are far from just background music. I am not speaking for all films these days, there have been many amazing and unique soundtracks written by new composers. Another point I'd like to make is that simple often means "humable." John Williams' themes are very simple in nature and that is what makes them catchy. I think Williams "makes up" for his simple melodies in other aspects of his music, but I won't go into that now. I think he's a really good composer. He is not my favorite, but he's definitely up there. To go back to your original point about the melodic creativity of Stargate, have you studied the main theme of Stargate? I mean it's a brilliant theme, but it is extremely simple. It's based on just two chords: I and iv. I would say that Howard Shore's themes are inherently more complicated than Arnold's. But they are both really good. Sorry for writing so much.
I can't believe that almost 22 years has passed since this was released in the theaters in the UK. It seems like yesterday. Anyway... great movie and probably one of the best soundtracks of the decade.
This is the Opening Theme and parts of Orion and The Gate Opens from the original movie soundtrack (through 2:30, and then loops). I think this is more like a suite than the "original, unreleased" theme.
Thank you for uploading this. David Arnold's score merges all within STARGATE the film and then the series. It's chilling. Without the music, the story would be nothing. The Goa'uld would be mundane. Egypt only? It's about a universe filled with beings out to enslave the human race. ¬ Janet Thompson Deaver
+Morgan le Fay i kind of disagree. but i would agree that the show would be pretty flat with out the music. the music does make the show much more of a experience to enjoy.
i think the composer in the series was pretty good. but i really like the direction of the amazing David Arnold. he had a way of composting a track to be remembered for generations to come. but they are both great composers. but with tv shows there is only so much time to prepare for the next episode or maybe he waited until the season was done to add the music. it still can be a daunting task with the limited time or ppl to compose something amazing. this is why movies get a better soundtrack.
this actually kinda scared me while filling out applications. but i love stargate music. its a really dramatic moving and meaningful soundtrack. i love to here the chorus.
Lockesty I watched the series. They are of diffetent worlds. In the movies, the Goaulds built the stargates and they were not biological symbionts, but more like body possesing spirits. And somehow, I found it more frightening than small snakes whose only ability was deepening the voice of a person..
The new films will have to be beautiful. Even if I like the first one it's to "military" and mainstream. Emmerich must explore aspect of discovery and beauty, as we hear in the end of the overture. Stargate is a wonderful opportunity to make great things on the screen. I loved the series and I'm sad SG-Universe was cancelled...
peloquin1979 Tomorrow Never Dies (terrorist bazaar and Hamburg car park), and The World is Not Enough (boat chase).. Wing Commander, Casino Royale, Randall and Hopkirk - deceased, Sherlock, enjoy etc..
Yeah! "The Decision" from Ark of Truth is awe-inspiring especially when paired with the imagery going over those snow-covered mountains. I thought I was the only one that like that track so much...
The 80s to mid 2000s had the best soundtracks. the 90s had a few handfuls of great movies while the 80s had more and the 2000s had some. This theme was amazing and really showed what the movie was about. I didn't like the ending. Maybe a world you could return to whenever you wanted, but not such a definite ending. Troy also stole this !😡
Funnily enough alot of David Arnold Stargate score was used in the BBC Horizon Dinosaur documentary called Giants of Argentina, which I remembered fondly as a kid. When I first watched it I was like 'hmm, why does the music in this Dinosaur documentary sound so familiar. Now I remembered 😄.

+LiquidBlaze i think the fans should come together and make our own series. whether that be through you tube or other media sources like using a video game. example modded skyrim. just get a good story to tell and come up with a quest. get some voice actors in there. as you can tell i have thought about this for a while. ever sense they canceled so many games that were in development. for a while there they had a community of fan based writers came together and created a series called stargate horizon. it was a reading kind of series. but ppl like me couldn't get into such a series. im more of a audio video person when it comes to stories. but it would be cool to have the element of experiencing it as well.
+LiquidBlaze There's an Atlantis comic in the works, as well as a reboot on the way after Independance day, so we may get a release in 2018 or 19, depending on how well production goes.
As I understand it, one of the creators wanted to do an "aliens built the pyramids" story where they find a buried spaceship in Egypt, and the other wanted to do "Lawrence of Arabia on another planet". The combination of the two became Stargate.
