I think I got her by accident when I got a bunch of roses from a lady in town. I am so excited it is a climber. its SMELLS AMAZING! It reminds me of my mothers roses in the garden, I lost her to cancer when I was 5. She doesnt like rain I agree. Oh PS I just passed my diagnostic for Master Gardening in Tolland on Saturday! So happy to have tests all the exams. Now I just need to get the office hours in

I was concerned to see some people mentioning their Generous Gardeners' turn more white over time and lose their pink color, I hope that's not the case...I really wanted roses with some color to contrast the white trim of house...and pink is so beautiful classic color, ty!

How beautiful! I have on Generous Gardener. This year will be it's second year in MN zone 4. It's pretty cold here but I cannot wait until it turns as gorgeous and as full as yours.
Beautiful roses. And indeed, the Generous Gardener seems to be disease resistant. But you really made me laugh when you said that David Austin roses are "famous for disease resistance". On the contrary! The David Austin roses are among the most disease susceptible roses that I have in my garden and are generally known as susceptible for blackspot and mildew. My Glamis Castle is totally defoliating and even Golden Celebration doesn't have a single leaf that is free of blackspot already during the first flush of blooms (if I don't spray them), even though many of my other roses show none or just a little blackspot. The fact that they have pesticides in their webshop is telling. Recently, David Austin has removed a large number of their roses from their catalog and the newer ones tend to be healthier, so let us hope that this trend continues. For now I don't buy David Austins anymore, because I like to have a garden, not a rose hospital, and breeders such as Kordes, Tantau, Poulsen, Meilland, etc., have plenty of interesting alternatives and I am sure that many American alternatives exist as well.
I must agree with you. DA is retiring many of his roses because of disease problems. That is a mistake statement on my behalf. Although his new introductions are showing great promises.
What zone are you in? I’m in zone 7a & looking for a very disease resistant climber that is a great repeat bloomer for a 6 foot arch. Would you please give me your recommendations? Thanks
I would strongly disagree, yes they aren't perfect, but english roses were bread from old and very disease resistant varieties hence they are considered disease-resistant and winter proof too. It's just there are MORE resistant roses out there ie some german Kordes and some of the american varieties too. However, german roses lack gracefulness and are generally very tasteless/boring roses without any character unless you go with their mock-ups bred from Austin roses (ie Kordes Earth angle is bred from Austin's Geoff Hamilton and looks identical too). Your particular region/climate might be non-suitable for Austin's roses which happens, but there are lots of gardens incl Austin's garden in Shropshire which thrives without spraying and is doing just fine.. The reason why Austin removes lots of roses off stock is really simple - stock issues, they've got too many varieties and they struggle to sell new varieties unless you just remove old ones and replace them with new. A lot of very successful roses ie Munstead Wood and Jude the Obscure were removed despite being very healthy and popular.
I planted LoS last year. She was a bit spindly and i was concerned i had made a mistake. This year she has thrown up huge canes thicker than my thumb. Probably about 5ft tall at this point and no sign of stopping. Imho well worth a try!
Those pesky beetles are not a big problem for my garden. Don’t know why, but am happy about it. The light standard treatment is cup of water with a drop of liquid soap. I walk in the garden and knock them in, soap ruins the tension of water surface and beetles drown. Products with neem oil are helpful. Happy gardening!

I did try, didn't like the effect at all. I tried to pair my climbing Ahola rose with white clematis. Clematis looks like bird nest, messy when not in blooms.
Oh, gosh, all roses love sun and will be the happiest in full sun, unless you garden in really hot climates. Right now, DA offers a good selection of climbers and all of them love sun. Good luck!

@@TRUFIVE50 You know what, you can call DA and talk to them, they run internet chat too, very good at responding. They will have a good list of proven heat loving roses. Do it, especially if you need to invest into more than one rose, this way you are sure of success...

Hi there, I planted that rose probably 8-10 years ago, it is growing on 8-9 foot high arch. There are 2 of them on both sides. I train both of them very vertically and the bottom is bare. The arch itself is probably 5 feet wide. Isn't she beautiful!
Hi again olga..I visit this video a lot to learn more about this rose. Mine is being trained on a wire mesh on a wall in the UK. The laterals on my rose are more like main canes (third year in my garden). Your laterals look thinner and dangle down lovely. Mine are so thick and many lean forward and some are about 50 to 100 cm long! I did prune it in March and it still only has 2 main canes..but there are a mass of laterals. Is it normal to have such huge lateral growth? I'm hoping you do a video this year of how far back to take the laterals after the cluster has finished blooming . Thank u for your time olga x
It is surprisingly hard for the gardeners to figure out how to train the climbing rose. I will do a video after my GG finishes its first flush of blooms and will try to make it easy for everyone to understand. Thank you!

Such a beautiful rose, mine is younger than yours and not so large, but for me the flowers are much too fragile. They fall apart so quickly and if there is any wind or rain the blooms are all destroyed.
Oh, yes, that is the only minus for that rose- fast loss of petals. Everything is there- beauty, disease resistance, strong growth, elegance.. Is there a perfect rose?
Hm, Generous Gardener is not good with long lasting blossoms, they fall fast, just after 2-3 days of blooming. There are a lot of blooms, that is a relief. One taking over another. I can't really answer how long the first blooming time is, will check on that this summer. GG repeats blooms very readily and quickly. There is definitely a strong second flush of blooms, but sparse blooms are plenty too. Hope it helps..
I don't do pesticides in my garden. My kids are constantly rolling on grass and run around. I do build up the health of my garden soil and let plants fight their own fights. As for roses, I do natural sprays and tolerate some presence of diseases at the end of the season.
Congratulations! My spring is still far away! Here is zone 6/7 we will be doing stuff only in the middle of April. Oh, well. But you got your rose! Enjoy!
Hello Olga. I absolutely adore your garden and your beautiful videos with the lovely songbirds singing! I have some questions:we want to plant a climber to go around a 6 foot standard arch. The Generous Gardener is beautiful but I guess too big for a 6 foot arch? I called the David Austin customer service line & they recommended either Claire Austin or Strawberry Hill. I can’t find a garden center in New Jersey where I live that has Strawberry Hill. I could get Claire Austin but the only reviews I’ve seen of her are not very positive at all. I’m looking to purchase the roses in 3 gallon containers not bare root. First, do you have any experience with Claire Austin? What do you think of her? Secondly, what do you think of Strawberry Hill & do you know where I could purchase it? And finally, do you have any suggestions for roses for my arch? I’m in zone 7a & the roses would be in full sun for at least 6 hours per day. Thanks for any advice.

Oh, gosh, DA roses are gorgeous, but not famous for keeping their blooms very well. Look into newer introductions of roses from other rose breaders ( Kordes for ex). There are plenty to choose from...
I would say at least 4 years. And there will be just 2 or 3 main stems to do that. During consecutive years, GG will continue building number of stems.
I didn’t know I needed to watch this video. My GG is about 3 months old. I’d never considered how bare the base would be. I’m growing it up the front of my house so the smell comes in my bedroom window. I’ve got desdemona in the front corner that will match nicely. I might have to get another or move it to hide the bare base.
Your Generous gardener will have some feet coverage for 2-3 years and then it will become bare at the bottom. Unless you trim it extensively, but why to fight this climber? Hope it helps!
My rose grows in part sun situation. First flush of blooms come pink and then they age to cream. All the blooms after that are pale and keep yellow center. Have fun with your garden!
Hello! Beautiful video! I planted the Generous Gardener on either side of our arch way at the beginning of the spring.. but now worried we may have some very large thick suckers with no blooms growing -almost over the top of a 9 foot arch already! Do you have a trick to figuring this out think I should cut it out - is it safe to cut out now?
Watching your videos has given me the confidence to buy my first climbing roses! Generous Gardener! I’ve placed an order for 2 bare root generous gardeners that I would love to train onto an 8ft obelisk. Question for you, is training two gg roses on one obelisk a terrible idea? I was going to plant them opposite sides and outside of the obelisk and train the canes laterally spiraling in the same direction. Thoughts? Are the canes not flexible enough to have tight spirals? ❤
Hm, Generous Gardener has strong and sturdy stems. 8ft obelisk can be a bit small for its mature growth. If you want to do it, try to train those young stems right away, they mature fast.
@@OlgaCarmody I believe you can propagate through cutting for your own use rather than for selling to public. I propagated my lady of shalott from cutting using my original David Austin purchase and I planted these in my front garden. It is just for fun and hopefully I will be soon in the sea of lady of shalott

Olga, do you find the thorns bothersome at all on the arch? I want to put generous gardener on my arbor on a pathway into my backyard, but it gets a bit more traffic because it is a pathway into our daylight basement. I hope the thorns are not a big deal or stay to the side!
I never had any issues with those prickles. My rose canes stay on the exterior side of the arch. Plus the pass way is pretty wide. Hope it helps. Happy gardening!
Good afternoon from San Diego. How is your garden in early fall? I am planing to plant more roses next year. For 2 locations, I would like to plant Claire Austin and Generous Gardener. However, I’m not sure whether should I order 2 roses each location for a fuller look. What’s your advice? Thank you. / Can
If you have an arbor in both locations, I would order 2 roses and plant them on both sides. Climbers get bigger with time and can struggle if you plant 2 of them together in one spot.
Beautiful rose, I was wondering if you need to protect the canes during winter? What are your lowest temperatures that this roes is exposed to? Thank you
I don't do any protection on canes. Rose is good to grow to zone 5, I am in zone 6/7. Plus my garden is very private with strong privacy hedges and constructions on all sides. So, wind pressure is not strong. Our winter this year was mild, with 7F the coldest.

couldn't the bare feet have been avoided by bending the canes so they'd produce laterals? I understand the vertical canes will be bare like as you have
My rose is quite a “mature lady”, growing for the 8th season already. And because it is so strong, it produces thick vertical shoots, I wouldn’t even attempt to bend those young vigorous shoots in that location. It is quite narrow, unfortunatelly. But, I learned to enjoy those “bare legs”. Thanks.
hi Olga how do you keep your lady of shalott in bush form, the stems of mine are so soft and laying on the ground all over the place, do I have to prune really hard in winter? what shall I do to make them grow in a bush form
Hm, never had that problem. Do you have a lot of shade? This rose is stated as good for part sun though. Strong shade can make plants stretch for the sun and create long slender stems. Also, too much fertilizer ( especially nitrogen in spring) can give your rose a strong start in spring but the plant can’t support such rapid growth and topple over. Maybe you have a combination of both condition.
