Legendary photographer and filmmaker David Bailey joins the RA’s Artistic Director Tim Marlow to discuss his influential work and innovative portrait photographs from the last sixty years.
With a career spanning over half a century, David Bailey is one of the world’s most celebrated photographers. Discarding the rigid rules of a previous generation of portrait and fashion photographers, his work defined a new era and shaped the future of photography. In 1971, Bailey’s photos appeared in the landmark exhibition SNAP! at the National Portrait Gallery, a show of modern portraiture that also featured painted portraits by David Hockney RA. Bailey has since produced some of the most famous portrait photographs that have featured in major exhibitions and publications worldwide.
In this talk, Bailey discusses his original and imaginative approach to portraiture with Tim Marlow, giving a fascinating insight into the work of one of the greatest portrait photographers.

I'm 56 as I write, and I've always been a bit envious, of young people who had a dream, at a young age, and followed it through. Not Only, did Bailey, see it through - he became one of the best photographers in the world. And made a few bob. Good for him.

Bailey said about 'Driving a 101 BUS' -- I remember that route went all the way up East Ham High Street North and South and finished at the Woolwich Ferry Terminal - price 4 pence !

Love Bailey´s work, he is a grate inspiration being dyslexic myself. But his laugh is a bit like Mark Hammil´s version of the Joker in some way.

Marlowe in his academic straightjacket and with his pre-prepared script looked uncomfortable whenever Bailey veered off-question into 'surreal' bits, as he dismissively called them. Ironically the very opposite of what Bailey said he did with his portrait subjects in not imposing his own narrative on them. Would have been much more interesting if Bailey had been interviewed by another artist or at least someone looser and more playful.

Does anyone know the correct spelling for that German actors name " Julay Jim " who was the person that Bailey agreed not to Photograph ? .. Strangely enough, his mate Duffy had another German who was a total twat.. a composer who was called Otto Kelemperer .. strange that is.
