He turned it down and made Sampson send Suliman a letter to put David back at 168. 2nd David requested to move up to 175 when Canelo’s deadline was days away. Exactly. Just to give more details on the favorable treatment Benavidez received: He claimed his first belt by being allowed to cut in front of Callum Smith who was the actual WBC #1. Smith complained so he was given a "diamond belt" and was supposed to be entitled to a title shot but Benavidez ended up dropping his belt doing coke rather than taking the fight. Dirrell and YIldirim ended up fighting for the vacant belt which ended in a controversial SD technical decision in a fight cut short on an accidental headclash on Dirrell as Yidlrim was coming on. Yildirim petitioned for the rematch but the WBC decided to give Benavidez the next shot at Dirrell and placed Yildrim as mandatory. What did Benavidez do with the belt this time? His team under manager Sampson publicly rejected a unification with stablemate Plant and dismissed Smith who had been petitioning for the fight all along, telling Smith to "stand in line" even though Smith was the division top dog by then holding the WBA and Ring titles. The WBC finally ordered Benavidez to face his backed up mandatories Smith and Yildirim once and for all but Benavidez dropped the belt again this time blowing weight. The WBC then gave him a 175 title slot but he rejected that too. Meanwhile team Benavidez bold face lies about being 3 year mandatory based on fighting Ellis when that was just a random cherrypick he took coming off of rejecting those fights. His fight with Plant last March was the actual eliminator and the WBC were set to rule on his status this March but just weeks beforehand he rushed to sign a random fight with Gvozdyk at 175 and requested the WBC name it an eliminator instead of activating his 168 mandatory. Now the WBC is giving him the option of mandatory in 2 divisions at 168 and 175. The notion that he was somehow done wrong by them is comical when they've bent over backwards for him from the start but he squandered every opportunity with his lack of motivation and discipline. It was Canelo who stepped up and did the work overgrown Benavidez refused at 168, and also challenged 2 champs at 175 where Benavidez refused to challenge for a title period even after blowing weight. The fact that you have people in the boxing media repeating every random lie coming from team Benavidez shows the lack of journalistic standards in boxing. They can try to hype him as a "monster" despite his padded resume but the public hasn't bought into it based on his low ppv sales and his lackluster performance against a retiree is making even many of his fanboys reassess the hype.
