The sheer size of David's hands help to explain how he can do what he does on a guitar, at the same time huge hands are not asset when you are playing a short scale instrument like mandolin or violin. His musicianship was and is astounding. He channeled the best of what he had absorbed by listening. . . what matters is how big are your ears.
Not at this show, but saw David back in 75 and 76 up in Connecticut! This just how I remember it!! As he said, "Come on fingers, do your stuff". Now I play guitar and I appreciate just how it was!
What a treat it was to stumble across this terrific video of Bromberg performing this beautiful and brilliant weaving together of popular Celtic fiddle tunes. He was at the peak of his talents in 1976, before taking time off to study violin making, opening his own violin shop and becoming the most respected expert anywhere on pre-1950 American violins. He's back performing again now and shows no signs of slowing down.
