This is the first video where we get the David Brown ready for the next season on the farm. We change the engine oil, the Oil filter, clean the sump, clean the oil pump mesh and the air-filter , besides changing out the fuel filters and bleeding the system.

Best David Brown instruction on RU-vid! I have had my 1974 DB 990 for twelve years and love it. I have learned so much from your videos that I could never find anywhere else, especially hydraulics. I have much respect for heavy British metal and engineering from that era. Ga zo door!

@curtrn

@@joshalger6059 I do believe your correct. They must be some of the best machines ever built ! I just purchased a 770A for $500 from a couple that sits behind us in church. They told me their Grandfather passed away 5 years ago and it's just been sitting outside under a tree in his field the whole time. I went there and thought this thing is a pile of scrap metal. After 10 minutes of fooling with it, the thing started. I could not believe it. The lift does not work, the rear tire wobbles and I have several other issues. They knew I would spend more time on it and money than it's worth. It's hard for me to see an old tractor get scrapped. Oh I am having a hard time rationalizing all the time I will spend on this thing. Because in the end they are so little valued. I have restored so many Gravely walking tractors in the last 15 years.

Good engineering on that tractor. For comparison, my new MB car has the fuel filter combined with the electric fuel pump and the fuel level sensor all combined and installed INSIDE the fuel tank. When the pump died last spring my regular mechanic couldn't change it since he's not privy to MB's secret diagnostic codes and the car had to be towed a second time to a dealer. The warranty had expired the prior year so the bill was all on me. The fuel pump unit was priced at just over $1000 and by the book required 7 hours of shop time to replace (the fuel tank needs to be removed from the car), at his shop rate this added another 1300 dollars to the job on a six year old car with 80k miles on the clock. The car was out of service for almost two weeks. On my '99 MB the fuel filter and pump are both outside the tank, filter is like yours and replaced every 50k miles. The car has some 160k miles and has had only one repair, that for the 'electronic' fuel cutoff solenoid, cost about $200. The aren't better but they're way more expensive. My tractor is a newer Kubota that is engineered much like yours, all mechanical.

A great video, I enjoyed watching it. I was taught by my father when a young teenage girl, how to service the 990. However, changing the hydraulic filter I do not like. I always feel as if it's never complete before replacing it's cover.. When on my own to prime the fuel, I made a cord with a hook and slung in over the cover and attached to the levee hole. Pull and release repeatedly listening to the tank flow until I could see the air was gone. Yes, it is an amazing tractor to work with and under rated. Thank you

Fuel filter #2 was also full of gunk, so I think the injection pump fine strainer (if there is one) needs to be checked and cleaned/replaced. And the shape of the fuel tank would let a lot of fine atmospheric dust collect at the bottom and over time form the gunk - diesel has properties of attracting water and dust. So, I think the tank also needs to be inspected and cleaned. Thanks for posting.

Oh Yea! Old iron! Electronics are good for some stuff (RU-vid?) but then again just steel and gears do it for me. One of my favorite things to see is an older Diesel engine sitting on the ground with no wire except to the starter, no radiator, no electronics, and it fires right up and keeps chugging. The simplicity is just great. I'm just fighting now with the EGR system on my 90s truck and (ironically, cuz they suck) the vacuum diaphragms and all are fine but the ECM-controlled solenoid valve is likely the intermittent culprit... geez... And I need to pass a smog test...

Hi Steve. Was the black stuff in the fuel filters like jelly? It could be what's commonly known as 'diesel bug'. This actually grows in the diesel. It's an organism, and can be treated with a biocide additive in the fuel. Modern diesel suffers more with it as a result of ethanol being added to diesel.

Very nice, ordered and calm. Thanks so much for the time to video & edit this down. Some 990s (most?) have no stop-tap on the diesel tank, so diesel flowing whilst changing the diesel filters expected? Also, the oil-bath air filter has two mesh filters closely connected (on mine) - mine wouldn't separate and they're very tight - so after cleaning it, it went back in. I was curious to see if you also cleaned/changed the lifting handpump gauze filter on the other side, or is that an unusual activity rather than annual maintenance. Thanks again, great sequence of videos. Jeff, UK.

I remember my father's '50 Chevrolet, it had an oil bath filter just like on your tractor, I believe this was common before the paper filters came on the market. Some farm ops might clog up a filter rather quickly. I was surprised that each of the fuel filters had the same element, practice I know is usually a 10 micron filter first followed by a 3 micron secondary, yours were very dirty, either you didn't change as often as you said or you are getting really crappy fuel. Was there no gasket on the engine oil pan, that would be strange? My Kubota has only a single stage filter but with a clear case so you can see any trouble brewing. The air filter on the Kubota has 'turbine' blades to spin the incoming air so that dirt particles fall into a collecting pan rather that into the filter. I fully agree that a low stress mechanical diesel, probably an OHV design, is a great low speed tractor engine, I see a lot of old tractors still earning their keep 40 and 50 years later and a lot of folks rebuilding them to run like new again. Keep up the good work and please keep the videos coming. What is your day job, not asking you to be too specific but what type of work do you do?

I have a renewed confidence in my ability. So again thank you. I have a question . I totally understand if you cant answer it as I realize you probably get thousands of questions but just in case.... there is an "extra" fuel type filter between the seat and fender on my Betsy. Hi Steve, would you please tell me why you never purchased a good used high quality Turner or Bomford bandit hedge trimmer flail mower instead of that junk .
@D3Sshooter
@D3Sshooter 3 года назад
good question Mark, I guess because I was able to buy it cheap secondhand. I knew that with another 1000 euro I can get it working well.. so the total cost is 3000 euro.... That is far below the high quality trimmer as you stated.... I cut the hedge on the farm 3 times a year ( 1Km of hedge in total)

Hi Steve, I think you may have put the wrong date on your oil filter, shouldn't it be 17/04 (unless of course you made this video in March). Cheers, Stephen.
