Downloaded the file. Unfortunately, the music kind of sucks. Aayushi Karnik plays a mean guitar, but her voice is unlistenable. Chesky's songs are like a oneway ticket to Snoozeville. Ode to Joy is fine, but I've heard that one before. Interesting concept, but until the material gets better, no thanks.

Steve, Love your channel! Can you do a follow up interview with David Chesky? Too many unanswered questions left from this interview. Who is doing the mixing/dsp on the new recordings? What headphone amp and headphones are they using? What amp & speakers are they using. David says they will also have DSD files. DSD can not be mixed/edited in the Digital Domain and must be converted to PCM or back to analog going through an analog mixer and back to DSD. How are they handling the DSD recordings? David also talks about listening to music at home. What is his home system? I know a little over twenty years ago when I visited David he was running Lamm electronics and Verity Parsifal speakers which sounded incredible.

I downloaded right away...........LOVE David's orchestral work on track #3 ! I am a purest when it comes to recording and I believe in the strict principals of TRUE stereophonic recordings. As a live orchestral recording engineer myself, I am willing to 'bend' a bit and found this sampling an intriguing delight! This first listen was on my modest livingroom system. Bang & Olufsen Beosystem 6500 paired with Klipsch Reference Premier 280F towers with a small laptop as source. I look forward to hearing in the large music room with the 2.1 Martin Logan Classic 9's and all Parasound electronics. This should be even more expansive sitting some 20' back (O:

Great idea. I am downloading the sampler. David's proclamation of audiophilia resonates. I love to listen to great stereo sound. Even more than the particular love of the musical composition. And I have had that experience where the concert time finally arrived, and I scrambled to get there after days on planes. I show up tired, used and not in the mood. I recall once sitting in the second balcony sitting sideways because my legs were too long to squeeze into the seat. Let me go home.

So this sounds like ‘expansive stereo’ and probably what ‘Spatial Audio’ should be but isn’t. The rub I have with spatial is that, while immersive, it’s not natural to be encircled by musicians and have the sound/instruments come at you from every direction. It might be fun and interesting to a point, but I think David’s take is the more natural and realistic way to go - Stereo e x p a n d e d.

Thelma Houston's, I Got the Music In Me, ... likely my all time fave reference track. As SNL's Stefon would say; it's got everything... clean tight transient drive ... that builds and builds, solid bass, great drums, topped with an incomparable vocal performance climaxing in a tight, well under 3min performance. The toms are quite the standout to me, well rounded big clear tone, as is her powerfully sustaining vocal, demanding a systems midband. That track at realistically live levels on a highly capable rig, elicits the same response every time, ... Wow! Damn! Exhilarating every time. The clean dynamics just beg for more and more level.

I really admire the enthusiasm and persistence of audiophiles which includes not only the users but the manufacturers, the reviewers, everyone else who is absorbed. They will go to no end to get what they want. And yet after 60 years of my own interest I've yet to meet a single person in this industry who had even remotely close skills to understand the problem of high fidelity sound recording and reproduction let alone a concept to solve it. If you were to draw a functional block diagram of the cheapest 1958 portable stereo system and the most expensive advanced audiophile system today they would be identical. Stereo signal source, stereo preamplifier, two channels of power amplifiers, two speakers, and wires to connect it all together. Every element refined countless times and ways, cost no object. Then why does it always fail? It's not the equipment that's flawed or the recording technique. It's the concept that's flawed. You don't need to be a golden ears audiophile to notice the difference instantly between a recording of music and the real thing heard live, especially at a large concert venue. They are that different. The more live music you've heard and had drummed into your head, the more obvious and disappointing the recorded sound is. Advice to people in this industry. Go to a lot of live concerts of unamplified music. Stop hitting your head against a brick wall that won't budge and stand back. Your headache will go away and if you throw away everything you think you know and start from scratch you might just see a way around the wall or over the wall as I did. Now a warning. This is NOT an easy problem. It requires a lot of science, engineering, and mathematics to understand.

Hi David this sound great, particularly the part about giving new and young artists a leg in the door. I love the idea of a 120 degree sound stage, as well as a new take on stereo. This is a little bit like what Paul M at PS Audio is trying to do with “Octave Records” by taking conventional stereo recording to its audiophile limits. David seems to be thinking outside the stereo box with a more contemporary and new twist. Good luck with it and I cannot wait to see and hear where it goes. Thanks to Steve for getting it out there,

I dont have faith in the headphone mix. They sound so vastly different, even more different than speakers - in my opinion, so mixing on average headphone like hd600 will make it great for that headphone, but better headphones might sound worse than with the speaker mix. I would suggest dark and bright mix instead, or more fun mix and more realistic one. If i listen to Stripped by Macy Gray, it comes out as if im really there, using beyer dt48 A, but if i play something that went trough processing, it becomes this fake, plasticky 2d mess, so David going dsp and all effects really doesnt excite me one bit. Mind you that new headphones sound bad with Chesky recordings, better than compressed ones, but still not even close when compared to something like dt48A or good speakers

Nice interview with David. I have quite a few albums from the Chesky label. That Thelma Houston / Pressure Cooker album is a brilliant album - a Sheffield Lab limited edition vinyl release back in the 70's. Along with the Harry Jmes and Lincoln Mayorga and Friends albums, it is highly prized by audiophiles and collectors. Sheffield were the pioneers of the direct to disc process. Amazing albums, amazing sound - have 6 of the original vinyl series and some of the CD releases.

So it's DSP and Spatial Audio but in the hands of an audiophile and musician. Sounds interesting. Look forward to listening to the sampler on speakers and cans. As someone else points out it resonates with what Paul McGowan is doing at Octave records without the DSP. I disagree a bit with what he says about 5.1 and 7.1. I think a lot of audio geeks have surround systems as well as two channel, or sometimes combined with two channel. Personally I really enjoy SACD and Blu-Ray surround mixes and even disc based Dolby Atmos if done well (see Steven Wilson).

So, i put on “ breakfast Dance and barbecue “ by count basie and his orchestra… it was a roulette offering recorded in “dynamic stereo”. When i heard it, my jaw hit the floor… it was precisely as described by mr chesky. Extremely wide, insanely deep, observably articulate sound stage. The “boys in the band” were live in my living room… and the musical chatter, musician hummings, and the distant audience comments, along with dishes clanging at the tables were all palpable. If that 1959 recording , enhanced in 2001 sounds that good… I can’t wait to hear this new technique in my room.

Were the tracks in the sample pack mastered separately for the two systems? And I am not just only talking about the perceived difference in soundstage. Different mastering was especially noticeable on the 5th track, Ode to Joy; bass volume on the headphone mix was quite noticeably higher than on the speaker mix. I didn't hear such difference in other tracks' bass frequencies Also the speaker mix sounded much more clear while the headphone version had quite noticeable reverb or echoing effect. I would say based on my listening on only headphones (HD650) that the speaker mix was more enjoyable and balanced sounding. Also the naming on the 6th and 7th tracks in the headphone mix -folder is reversed.

FYI, hrtf audio has been done with pc and console gaming since the 90s, and Dolby Headphone encoding/mixes have been around almost as long. DTS also has had hrtf tech for their surround decoders for many years, and both Dolby and DTS have significantly upgraded their surround decoders for headphones since their lossless Blu-ray multichannel codecs appeared. Yamaha, Harmon Kardon, and others also had proprietary headphone hrtf decoders built into receivers and processers since the late 90s or earlier, usually auto engaged when headphones are plugged into the receiver, defeatable. Monster of wire fame also released several Dvd music discs around 15 years ago- George Benson, Al Jarreau and others with Pre rendered Dolby headphone mixes included on the disc in addition to the 24/96 lossless PCM tracks. Several concert and movie Dvd, Blu-rays have also been released over the years with dedicated Dolby or DTS prerendered (not decoder needed) 2ch headphone tracks for an outside your head sound field experience But always room for improvement, and DSP tech has come a long way

LCR would be a fairly effective method of achieving higher quality than stereo. I'd prefer a point source for center panned material, and it'd be super easy to downmix to stereo. To be honest, 5.1 is also pretty reasonable as a standard for music.

Checked out the free demo. The headphone versions are more interesting than standard stereo with headphones, but if you really want an astonishing experience with music on headphones look into Impulcifer by Jaakko Pasanen. It takes some relatively modest equipment and DIY measuring to create personal BRIR files, but the results can be truly next level with any stereo recordings. In my decades long search for audiophile sound Impulcifer is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, no joke.
