Thank you so much for posting this even if we miss a bit of lack of tape. Not only did we get to see a good trick but that show thanks to Mr.Copperfield helped to raise alot of money to help fix up Lady Liberty. This was done in 1983.
@AnOriginal Name lmao without us you'll have no flag and no country lmao learn about history, France helped usa during the Independence war. France has the most of battle won, Napoléon is the greatest conqueror and charlemagne the founder of Europe, what about you?
Actually, there is an exact copy of this statue (scaled smaller) still on public display in France. There was a third model that actually has been lost Besides, Lady LIberty is an *extremely* old character. Google "Sol Invictus" to see what was basically the patron saint of the Roman military. Statues of her were carried around by the military and her image all over all sorts of their equipment, regalia and forms of documentation/uniform. Or Google, "Libertas" and you will see Lady Liberty once again.... the "Libertas" was the Roman currency (coins) issued about 2000 years ago by Caesar Augustus. Many satues of Liberty all over Europe and especially in Italty, went missing or were destroyed by the Germans, Italians and the surrendered-French.
The hardest thing to learn is skilled sleight of hand. For making statues "disappear" you need only money, LOTS of money, and good team. IMO it is downgrade: everyone, rich enough, can make people, statue, tanks and etc. to "vanish". This trick in video is case of extreme downgrade, because it was made with the help of camera and it wont work live with random spectators. Just SHAME! What next? CGI?
Damn, only one mess up. Had that light not been reflecting off the radar's glass cover at 7:15, I'd have never guessed that he rotated the whole stage.
9:52, the old woman calmly says, "I have never seen a Statue of Liberty disappear before the way this one did"! ......WAIT WHAT. SHE'S SEEN MULTIPLE STATUES OF LIBERTY DISAPPEAR BEFORE?!?!
Rotating Stage > look at all the shadows change, while the curtain is up, on the backs of the chairs (especially the guys elbow shadow), along with the light & shadow changes on the stage wall on the right & the fake radar equipment. The biggest tell is the huge shadow from the radar box that glides across David’s waist/crotch area as the stage rotates & he is still with his hand on his head, easy to spot. The stage simply rotated to the right when the curtain was up. Copperfield had a contract with ABC to make several TV specials & was not beyond paying actors & using camera trickery for his illusions. Ahh, the 80’s, fun times!
@@pirabujamal95 It’s funny because it sounds like the lady is not only saying there is more than one Statue of Liberty, but that more than one of them have disappeared, and that she has seen it happen more than once.
@@pirabujamal95 In english I would say "The Statue of Liberty", using "the" instead of "a" since there is only one statue of liberty in the world. Saying "A Statue of Liberty" implies there are others, and when she says "the way this one did" also makes it sound like she has seen others disappear and maybe in different ways.
This illusion is not just about the "how its done.", its publicity, because people are still watching it & talking about it all these years later. Whether you know how its done or not. Doesnt matter. It did its job. It made him famous, well done.
Amazing bit of theater and magic. Main thing is this illusion is a TV illusion. Couldn't have been done magically without it! Haha I love it. I saw it live like some of my fellow commenters. It was great. Even though I now know how it was done!
He fooled those present. He had loud music with plenty of base playing, so the platform was already vibrating slightly, so nobody noticed when the whole platform rotated.
Love how they used the theme music from 'The Towering Inferno' in making this video. I almost expected to see Paul Newman and Steve McQueen to appear in place of The Statue of Liberty
David Copperfield was so lucky that he got a chance to see that grand lady of Liberty before she got restored!! I mean in this video, he went to very top of the Statue of Liberty; to the torch and to the crown!
Copperfield had a setup of two towers on a stage, supporting an arch to hold the huge curtain that would be used to conceal the statue. The TV cameras and the live audience only saw the monument through the arch. When the curtains closed, David waxed poetic while the stage was slowly and imperceptibly turned. When the curtains opened, the statue was hidden behind one of the towers, and the audience was looking out to sea. Voila!
Eric Archuleta Yeah we were fed bs back then like now, but it was done in a fun way with a smile on their faces unlike now where we are part of the trick and they are making us disappear!
***** Not entirely sure what your comment meant, but just google it, was all over the news that he and the crowd were just on a rotating platform that turned when the curtain was up... simple really.
+Keef Buckley ... there's no way they had that giant stage rotate enough to hide it. not to mention you could have easily heard and felt something that large 'turn' at that point in time. maybe not it would be abit more quiet but no, just because you 'googled' it and it came out to that, doesn't make it fact, sorry dude =/
The101Shell101Bullet I remember when it was first on and it was in the news lol, before google, not sure why you are defending "magic" for, take a page out of Penn and Tellers book and understand it's all the art of trickery and not con's
+Keef Buckley oh I'm not defending magic, and I'm not saying that he really made the thing disappear XD . but unfortunately I think that how it was 'done' is wrong. I think it was simply all staged on a stage, in a theatre with actors. would make way more sense.
Watch it from 10:25 to 10:42. Can you see the hatred in the eyes of the audience behind him, after he admits he is a son of an immigrant? Can you see it?
Who gives a shit about his "immigrant" status? That's very bigoted and arrogant on HIS part. selling to everyone watching, that he is so special because he is a fucking immigrant? Yeah right. Liberty? Ha! He doesn't know what it means. Because he was a an immigrant we should kiss HIS ass? That's basically what he is trying to envelop for the audience, in other words, Feel sorry for me, because if you dont, YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE. OMG! LMFAO! I cant get enough this cultural communist propaganda bullshit.
@@perceptions-wq5ro indeed, but here only few degrees would be enough, at night with the static statue lights being turned off, and the bright lights directed towards the audience
Trust me, no, lol. I was quite young when I saw this, and we all mocked it for how absurd it was. Even without knowing exactly how he did it, obviously no one makes the Statue of Liberty disappear, so we felt he jumped the shark with this. Believe me, there are lot more people willing to believe all kinds of crazy things now than then. Just look around YT and you'll see what I mean.
I love watching David Copperfield shows. I thought he was awesome when I was a child. My whole family used to watch his shows and I honestly thought he was jesus ! He was so good and put on an amazing show. Id go see him to this day.
NPR recently had an excellent Segment on this. Highly suggest if your interested in how it was done and more Details in general to check it on. Im sure it Archived on NPR Online.
any peasant who truly understands the medium (ie tv) half as much as mr copperfield, mr magic, mr whomever, immediately understands the obviousness in the utter simplicity of how this trick is performed. heres a clue: the medium itself. all the rest of it, the curtain, the polaroid cameras the chopper, all of these are mere props, supporting the deceit.
When I thought it was just a absolute black curtain surrounding the Statue of Liberty. However that radar did really burst my bubble, unless something disrupted the radar in order for the magic trick to work.
At 7:10. You can clearly see the reflection of the lights on the supposed "radar" screen move in a counter-clockwise direction, indicating the reflected light is off-platform and that the platform is being rotated clockwise. Oops! The cameraman/prop positioner didn't do a very good job.
Don't worry. The Statue of Liberty didn't go anywhere. It was a big TV special for its time. The audience was on a big lazy-susan that turned ever so slowly that they didn't notice. Of course, if the audience was able to get up and look outside what they could see from their narrow view on the stage, they would notice they were facing at a slightly wrong direction. Still, a good trick. The U.S. Government wasn't worried that the Statue world disappear. I wonder how much the production company paid the National Park Service to do the shoot.
@@garystinten9339 If you're talking about the circle of lights that light the statue, yes. From what I read it was just another bunch of lights arranged in a circle in New Jersey. The show just cut-away to show a video of those lights to "prove" the statue was gone.
The audience is on a moving platform which turns slightly to the right. when the curtain opens again, the statue of liberty is behind the left "tower" with bright searchlights turned on now (which makes surroundings especially dark). all lights of the statue itself are turned off. the circle of lights at the ground is a replication of the originally shown lights. thats it.
Imagine if there were 2 screens: one blue and one black. What if they dropped the blue screen half way but kept the black screen where they projected an helicopter on it. And what if all the people there are in on the trick.
he constructed a giant rotating platform-- 2 towers and sitting audience were on it. When he covered audience' view of the statue of liberty--> platform slowly rotated. Tower lights blinded the audience so their peripheral wasn't available to them. When he removed the curtain, rotating platform (including audience, camera, etc) had rotated 90 degrees if audience could have looked sideways (if lights on tower had not blinded their view.....
Notice how the curtain does not drop low enough for the live audience to see the harbor. You can also see how the base of the scaffolds are covered by 10 ft high bases. Hmmmm why would that be?
I was about 10 when they did this, and I remember my family was able to punch holes all over this with the fake radar to mirrors, etc. We were close, didn't think of rotating platforms.
PC Sorcar Jr is the only magician who whenever perform any show in foreign country always speaks in their native language. He knows 25 foreign languages, which he ca use to hypnotize. He can cycle on deep water in live. He disappeared Taj Mahal in full day light. He disappeared a passenger full of train in from of high court judges. He disappeared Victoria Memorial. Magic is in their blood from 3 generations. Who has better skills?
