This is David after the rollercoaster that was Deep Purple. He went from being an unknown from Redcar to fronting one of the biggest bands in the world, only to see it come to an end in Liverpool in 1976. He was at his best here, singing in his own key, with his bluesy r'n'b direction. Whitesnake would be formed a year later and would eventually reunite him with Jon Lord and Ian Paice. The period between 1973 and 1984 was his best time vocally, but the high range screeching plus the smoking and drinking killed his voice later on. Coverdale is a blues singer, not a heavy metal singer.
I think that he has always had an excellent voice in each of his periods. I even got the chance to see a Whitesnake show in 2016 and it's still amazing Comparing him to Ian Gillan who definitely lost his voice since Born Again David has always been very versatile
Played this album to a friend of mine in the mid-80s who had all the Whitesnake LPs up to Saints & Sinners. Got to the third track of this LP and he suddenly went, "Is this David Coverdale?" Yup. Best thing he ever did, no?

It's seems it ain't enough to get down on your knees and pray... My God this song is so melodically meaningful, its a timeless masterpiece that sadly not enough people even knows exist.
What a soulful song, love the whole album, never get tired of hearing this particular track, just breaks me every time I hear it, David’s vocals on this song are as good as it gets, waiting at the station ,one way ticket in hand screaming “ how long has the train been gone “.
I agree. I bought this album when it first came out and I still go back to it, 'time and again'. There is a purity and a feeling of melancholy to it that touches my heart with every listen, still today. That got lost from the later Whitesnake albums but here, we have the boy from Redcar finding his true self again.
early Coverdale is truly a treat -nothing against anything he's done since as there are gems all along the way -check out Whisper A Prayer For The Dying -nuff said
Now that's what music is supposed to sound like! I hate the melancholic mournful feeling I get when I listen to music from that era. Like mourning a tragically long lost lover! It seems the world's lost its' emotional sensibilities for the sake of commercial viability and sales potential compounded by the advent of bits and bites, America's Got Talent and the X-Factor. The only silver lining though... makes exiting this wretched world that much easier.
I know people use the adjective 'underrated' at the first available opportunity to apply to anything that didn't sell 10 million records, but this really is underrated. It's almost completely unknown or forgotten, but it's fucking terrific. I used to have this on LP back in the 80's but I lost it. Right ,I'm getting a new copy next week, no doubt about it
With that voice it's a no-brainer anyway. In that period his songwriting chops are exemplary. If I'd been a manager back then, I'd have followed him to the world and back.
DC had one of the most beautiful voices, ever. Hands down. There's just something that sets him apart from the rest of his (our) era. Other guys like Bon Jovi could sing, yeah. Or hit the highest of notes, yeah. But DC had soul. He makes ya feel..
Actually Simon Phillips played on the original recording on David Coverdales first album 'WhiteSnake'. this is a rerecorded version for his second album 'Northwinds' which featured Tony Newman on drums.
Simon plays on the track Say You Love Me, only, on the Northwinds album.... if you listen closely you´ll hear the difference from Tony Newman. Simon plays on all tracks on Whitesnake thogh as you stated.
Uma pena que não exista registros dessa música ao vivo. Acho que é o Coverdale no piano, faz tempo que olhei a ficha ténica, mas como ele vem de família de músicos, acredito que seja ele, seria legal ver isso ao vivo, quem sabe.
Cleveland and north riding of Yorkshire finest export. Bettys unofficial spokesperson for Yorkshire tea too. Ha ha ! The northern bellows . Best voice in the world
When Coverdale still had soul. Some music still does have depth; you just have to search for a while (Larkin Poe, Rhiannon Giddens, Natalie Merchant, Rachel Sermanni).
