Bless David Crosby for writing such songs “A Long Time Gone” and his years with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and earlier the Byrds! A truly remarkable contribution of music for us all!
anyone else's mind blown that a high school band is performing a protest song from the late sixties about four students being gunned down by the national guard. there is always still hope! ken burns Vietnam has a great section about the tragedy.
I was a student in the crowd on the Kent State campus on May 4, 1970. This song and seeing these kids so involved means so much to me. When I hear Ohio I am brought back to that day and the sad loss of my fellow students... but this rendition sounds joyful and this is how I want to feel from now on. I am joyful that I got to live another 51 years (so far.)
We're the same age, Andrea. (My aunt and uncle lived in Kent so I was there many times over the years. My uncle could only talk about half the kids not even being from Kent State, blah, blah.) I feel exactly as you do! Such a celebratory rendition; those violins and horns! The drums!
I was just a kid when this happened but these events made me who I am today. This song always makes me tear up... how could it not? Four kids are dead for no reason just as the song decries. Four dead in Ohio. And nobody ever paid for this dereliction of duty.
I lived in Kent then, across the street from campus. My father was a PhD student there at the time. I remember that day so vividly. This song always rings back so many memories...
Whoever came up the the idea of using all those kids was a genius. It enhanced the entire performance and created memories for those kids that will follow them the rest of their lives. I lived through Kent State and never thought I'd see the like again and then we saw what happened on the streets of Portland, Oregon.
@@cruisinusa5110 Yeah, cuz that 'war on drugs' has been such a national success. Using policing to fix drug addiction is like only using amputation to fight cancer; it works sometimes but, in general, makes it just makes matters worse.
Crosby passed yesterday. I felt the need to hear the Ohio song. So beautifully played but the innocent lives lost that day at Kent State University still have me asking "why". May Crosby and the victims of this senseless tragedy rest in peace.
David Crosby passed away few hours ago The legendary singer/Songwriter stays great parts of Musical history Hope those young people will carry on his music many many decades to come
A very dark day in American history. Forever immortalized in this song written by Neil Young and performed by CSNY. I still have the 45. Epic performance here. Thanks for sharing.
This is the most stunning and powerful version of the song I've ever heard -- including the original. What drives the power home for me is that -- all those young musician kids whose parents were kids when the killings took place REALLY got into it. I'm depressed at how history-starved kids are today. This brings me hope; this history came alive for and with those kids. This concert was 7 years ago; they're all gonna be voting come November. Let's see if this made a difference to them.
TY, David Kraft for your lovely comment...our family has had the privilege of living in this small town for almost 50 years, seeing these talented young people in action...three of our godchildren have graduated from Malbu HS and gone on to use their talents as successful young adults; I LOVE this video because our youngest godson is one of those talented drummers on that stage, and, he recently completed European tour with his own band as their drummer 🥰
Absolutely BRILLIANT! what a wonderful version of this Incredibly powerful song! Great to see all those young people enjoying it too.I hope they understood its meaning..
I'm the little girl playing snare drum in the front, haha! Was such an incredible night and experience. Such an honor. Never seen this video before! Thank you SO much for posting!!
I was 17years lost in the lost world 🌎 heard this song 🎵 on the short wave receiver, I never looked back. R I P David Crosby thank you for the music from South Africa 🇿🇦
Just some trivia. Neil Young, who wrote the original song was a Canadian at the time. When the song was recorded David Crosby got really emotional - he cried during the last part of the session. You can hear his voice tremble and break at the end. We were all in a state of shock, anger, and disbelief. And the picture of that 14 year old crying “Can somebody please, please help this boy” was just republished a few days ago. Her kneeling over a dying student in shock and disbelief won the Pulitzer Prize that year - it changed the way a nation saw its reality.
Cruising by (not so) old dvds I found that was Crosby who showed Young the mag with the picture of the young woman kneeling beside the dead student. Young wrote the song immediatly, just in front of Crosby who had Nash to make arrangements to hire a studio to record the song Ohio. In "Remember my name" Crosby points at the picture of the sub-humans firing their guns. It´s a must-watch. The immediate release of the single record thanks to the late Ahmet Ertegun was a real hit (in many senses of the word): Stay well. Stand up and be counted.
Great for kids to experience being a part of and expressing their voice and gifts True community and mutual resource Beautiful and powerful True mentoring!
Wow, this video made me feel the same way I felt when it first came out. It was great seeing young people getting in to the song. Great job to everyone involved.
This gem of a song still sparkles - who says good rockmusic can´t be political? And the young musicians with their talent and enthusiasm make this just awesome to watch!
The very best rock music being made today, and The War On Drugs is a perfect example, has everything to do with complex mental issues that many of these superb artists are dealing with.
Have seen and heard it so many times, it's still great! The energy spewed from it. I love the girl with the violin to Dann's right. She's having a really good time!
What a stark, remarkable performance of this legendary piece ... it's an unusual, but representative gathering of all Souls that terrible day affected. May we never forget that tragedy.
David Crosby has been welcomed home by the Kent State four with open arms... RIP Warriors. Jeffrey Glenn Miller; age 20. Allison B. Krause; age 19. William Knox Schroeder; age 19. Sandra Lee Scheuer; age 20.
Absolutely majestic stuff. I don't know how Neil could've restrained himself from making overtures of peace after hearing, and surely he had, this deeply soulful rendition of one of his most moving creations. Unfortunately, a permafrost seemed to engulf the interpersonal relationship side of Mr. Soul. Smooth sailing to you, Capt. Crosby.
Wow! It caused me chills! That is the proof that good music never dies or is forgotten. A great night for all this girls and boys playing with Mr. Crosby and friends. I will share it on my profile, no doubt! Thank you Seals...
This is so cool! To see what David Crosby is up to now, supporting and inspiring the next generation. I like the arrangement too - the brass sound great!
This year I finally drove down to Kent state for the May 4 commemoration ceremonies It was powerful and moving and I hope to attend every year in the future, I met a few of those who were wounded that day and learn much on the weekends events that led up to the shooting, I highly recommend attending especially the eve before for the candlelight vigil Thank you so much for this song
from ohio remember what happened at kent state i was a freshman in high school it tells the times we lived in and how we tried to right what was wrong 4 dead 9 wounded so those young kids out there protesting i hope u do better than we did but do that you kids know we tried
Crosby was the impetus for this Neil Young song. He showed Neil the newspaper article, rounded up Steven and Graham and was relentlessly phoning recording studios in the middle of the night to get in. The shut outs at the end are fucking epic. From Neil's liner notes of Decade " David Crosby cried at the end of this take...."
Excellente reprise et peut être un très belle hommage aux ÉTUDIANTS ASSASSINÉS trop jeunes IL faut rappeler le contexte de cette musique Pensées 💐💐💐🙏🙏🙏🙏
07 / 24 …. STILL relevant, and still a possibility. One of the Founding Fathers, referred to Democracy as a “ fragile experiment “ , and I have fear that our Republic is in peril … God Bless our Divided Union !!
Ohio (Neil Young) Tin soldiers and Nixon's comin' We're finally on our own This summer I hear the drummin' Four dead in Ohio Gotta get down to it Soldiers are gunning us down Should have been done long ago What if you knew her and Found her dead on the ground? @@stevenaragon4412 Not everyone in the world understand the USA english dialect. I bet you, in spite of bein aragon, don´t know a word of aranes (the language of Aragon, Europe).
Proud of all those young students taking part in a sixties protest song and counterculture anthem that commemorates the deaths of four students killed by national guardsmen at Kent State University on May 4, 1970.
