David Dunlop Sea and Shoreline Wave Study
David paints a dynamic wave flowing along the beach in this studio demonstration in oil on aluminum. He begins with a brief discussion of painting from layered photos created on the computer and discusses several color mixing considerations, including using intense color combinations. He then demonstrates different techniques and a variety of strokes for painting waves and the sea using a brush and a squeegee. He also explores the excitement of using inspiration from different types of art objects in his painting, including cloisonné. David’s infectious enthusiasm and multi-disciplinary perspective combining art, history, philosophy, science and technique will provide a unique workshop experience for you.

The fun part for me is the moment you take the very Broadway synthetic Soft painting Brush and begin painting - that is the moment of seeing, feeling, moving into the imaginary Space and the next moment is the wiping in of light - and the fun drawing of lights with the squeegie - I just love it 🎶💙🎵🦋

Your are a true Artist + Excellent Teacher...I'm curious about your motivations. I assume there's the base desire for creative expression, but then what do you plan will happen with your paintings ? Do you just want them to exist as an extension/expression of your creativity ? Do you see it as like a hobby, a sport, a business (to sell each one), ect...I ask because I majored in visual arts in high school, I had a strong interest, but wasn't eager to go to college right away. Then various things like many "Starving Artist " sales made me feel like I shouldn't spend much time and money on my art interests. I only have so much time, so I haven't done much art since my early twenties.

what if i have a falling wave on the right side ,what should i paint on the left side to keep that sensation of strengt and still give the impression of deepness?

Dear suvropbasu9864 - Thank you for your question and your kind comments, I paint on many different surfaces, from quadruple primed Belgian linen, paper, copper, single sheet aluminum, a composite sheet aluminium, like Dibond, comprising two 0.3 mm thick aluminium cover layers and a polyethylene or mineral core, and sometimes I paint over older paintings on all of these surfaces. It really depends upon my painting, and different surfaces give different effects. Some are harder surfaces and you can make different types of marks with your paint brushes, squeegees, paper towels, and other tools. I always experiment and learn from all of these paintings. To me it looked more like a landmass than a wave. Putting green against blue is surely going to give that effect. It seemed to me that it was forced to become a wave with an unconvincing result. Not the best highly photoshopped subject to begin with either. Hey, but i love David Dunlop. It's just, you can't win em all!

My question is where did you get that big big brush that you use in the beginning it’s absolutely incredible ....any links to that would be great . I am in Australia so if it’s on Amazon I can get it or I can get it delivered from Jacksons art as well let me know if you could thanks in advance 🙏

Maybe an 8 inch Liquitex brush? Available on Amazon or your local art store. But more creative, check out a large floor finishing brush at the hardware store, or rig several brushes together to see what happens.

You know Einstein said that he always wished he'd discovered cream hair conditioner because he would have scored a lot more babes. What do you think? Oh and that's one of the most bizarre and to use my phrase unattractive paintings I've ever seen. Thanks for the art.
