Slayer was good until Abyss. After that they lost their creativity. Hate Metallica all you want but they did evolve. You can't say the same for Megadeth and Slayer. After a while their songs sound too much alike.

You might say Megadeth has always just been the Dave Mustaine solo band, but Ellefson was the yang to Mustaine’s yin. Now Megadeth is like Danzig: not a band, just one guy with a revolving door of guys who can only handle the singer for a few records.

For me, I've always argued that Kill em all was a fast hard rock album; much like the first two Iron Maiden albums are just killer, hard rock. Everything about Kill Em All was written in a 70's rock fashion, just a bit heavier and faster. Such an absolutely amazing basically 70's hard rock album!

The guitars were like taking the best of Maiden & Preist & cutting out the other stuff & just so in your face. Theres a fine line between Hard rock & Heavy metal back in the day. I loved both. If Iron Maiden were a heavy Metal band then Metallica absolutley was. Its just labels. The first 3 Metallica albums were just incredible imo.

Theres a valid argument to be made for nearly every lineup and as much as i love Gar , Dirk might be the most skilled and versatile of all the drummers so far and between Marty , Kiko, and Chris , I'll take all three. Dave E. Should be and always will be the bassist of Megadeth , he's far more to their sound than just another bass player.

The whole argument about Metallica being "really not that fast" misses the point and overlooks what Metallica was about in the 1980s, but maybe their manager didn't get the memo at the time. Their metal was just perfectly balanced. The acoustic intros. The instrumental sections. The guitar harmonies. The transitions. The thematic content that went beyond the usual (e.g., the occult, the government, serial killers). It's why I prefer The Four Horsemen over The Mechanix. I also heard once that Ulrich tried to get the guys to understand that Sad But True had to have a slower tempo to get that heaviness; he was right, love him or hate him. It's why songs like The Thing that Should Not Be work. Their music has a timeless, cinematic quality that can be interpreted in various forms. I love Megadeth and Slayer, too, by the way. No hate here! And Anthrax beats any of the Big Four live.
There’s a sexual element? Give me a break. “We’ve got armadillos in our trousers” type stuff here. It’s fun to hear about the legacy stuff but sexy element? How about there’s an integrity element. It was about attitude, I didn’t get into thrash metal because I wanted a sexy element. If I wanted that I would’ve listened to Poison. That was a completely different vibe.

In the early days when bands were getting going it was ALL about the fans and Music. Once you get the taste of metal in your mouth it is senseless to try stopping it. Just accept that they need us, and in many ways we have relied on them at whatever times. *Like in the Gym. To me Slayer hits when I am in a great mood and want to write kick ass poetry.

True. I love MegaDave, and but Kirk's versions of the solos were really improved over the originals. Even the iconic final solo for the Four Horseman, still sounds better than 1985's Mechanix, by Dave, studio version.

You know what i noticed too. All of the members of Megadeth actually praise Metallica. Even Nick did a Creeping Death drum cover! Heh I wonder if that's why Dave keeps kicking them out his band lol... but ironically Dave is obsessed with them too so who knows anymore.
Ellefson said in an interview once that he and Marty Friedman wanted to go see Metallica in concert, but they were worried about Mustaine's reaction. Marty Friedman also covers Metallica songs on concert.

Its funny because i write and record my own thrash metal and everything said in this interview is correct. You cant have a 4 minute thrash song with nothing but fast and technical, because then you lose out on slower riffs making the song more interesting and structured. Sometimes a riff played slower is WAY heavier.
Honestly i like The Mechanix but Four Horsemen is better for this reason, it has more groove slowed. Also, it has more sections and better lyrics. Love Megadeth though.

Why can't people enjoy both styles? It's a mood thing. Sometimes I want really fast and aggressive so I listen to a lot of Grindcore or Hardcore/crust punk. I also like Death metal and Black metal. If I want slow and heavy I listen to Doom metal. If I just want to chill I listen to some traditional heavy metal. Probably my 2 favorite bands are Napalm Death and Iron Maiden. What I like is how people still think that thrash metal is fast. It's really not compared to other genres. Thrash is rather mid paced. The thing is there are other genres of music that are just as fast as metal eg. Classical, Hall of the Mountain King gets just as fast as any thrash song. Even a lot of violin and fiddle music is just as fast, it just doesn't have the distortion.

Jeff Young is such an under rated musician(MIT 85). I was fortunate enough to see them(MD) open for Alice Cooper w/Jeff Young on lead. They were great! From them to Alice, my dad was having 73' flashbacks with AC. I really want to see these guys.

Lars was always a mediocre drummer, even Hetfield admitted this in a playboy interview. They thought so much of Cliff they relocated to San Fran to get him. So I'd say I agree...Mustaine and Cliff had alot of input in the bands sound. Despite how I feel about how Hetfield sold his soul w the black album onward,I've always felt he was an underrated guitarist. I mean there's no way Hetfield and Lars ego could co exist w Daves.. Dave was destined to go off snd go his own thing... but Metallica used his music up Master, so Dave's influence was always there. I remember an old interview w Dave when he told about listening to Leper Messiah and he lost his shit becuase it was his riff and he was the Bowie fan of the group. All those years later, they were still using his ideas. Kind of hard to blame him for being bitter about it.
As a fact they use mustains sound on their first couple of albums that got them the big money backing the Dave Mustaine didn't have but he was still able to form a very successful band without the big money backing that has to say something

to me Metallica's heaviness culminated with the Justice album . went downhill after that when Kirk started relying on his wah for every lead . Dave has consistently put out heavy music since starting Megadeth and the newest album stays true to that .
@@mattjns nailed it - its the damm karenmetalheads that get triggered. I go to watch a Megadeth video and I see Metallica and now even D.E. is mentioned. No one just talks about the great music both bands have. Yes Metallica went in a lot of directions and I think it is awesome. Megadeth even tried to follow them and they made great easier going metal. The difference in the bands IMO is the front man. Papa Hett is the clear front man and it is not even close. Love both bands always will even the "bad ones".

The reason Megadeth was and never can be bigger than Metallica can be summed up in 2 words: Dave's voice. Just be real about it. Play a song from each band to a non-metal person... they will always choose Metallica.
First of all, speed is not everything. You gotta have some moments as Jeff explained, pauses and hits to make things exciting to listen to. That's why KEA and Metallica in general have always been way more musical, their songs have been way better put together and the instruments serving the song more. KIMB and Megadeth have always been amazing to listen to, but they lack those ingredients that made Metallica. Dave in certain songs sounds like he's showing off just to prove he's faster, more complex or anything else than that. More complex =/= being better than someone else. As much as I like Megadeth I can't stand Dave being constantly butthurt and not growing the fuck up.
@@elpeluca7780 Even that is subjective. While agreeing I can't help but thinking that music is so subjective not even the artists can always make music for themselves only. Everyone has their own different opinions these days. Yes, fans will appreciate if they maintain their individuality through songs and keep their artistic integrity, but it's not something you can keep on doing without innovating yourself at a certain point.
Jealousy led to two great bands. Mustaine should be thankful he was kicked out to be honest. If he remained who knows if he didn't had a worst fate? Musically or even worse... At least him having a burning desire to surpass them hold him on some...track. More or less. And metallica did their thing anyway.

Truth be told, Metallica used to be great up until the Black Album, then they fell into the trap of letting their fame go to their heads, and became too commercialized on the next few albums, even Slayer wrote way better songs than Metallica did on their last few albums, even Anthrax wrote better songs too, Megadeth's latest album, The quick, The Dying, and The Dead is jam packed full of great songs.

I think if Mustaine wouldn't have been fired he would have quit in a couple years anyway. Everybody cites the alcoholism, and that was a part of it, but I think if Mustaine would have stayed in Metallica for a couple albums and tours he would have quit anyway. I cant see that lineup lasting too long even if alcohol was out of the equation.

yeah... mustaine talks a lot about kill em all, but, what about master of puppets being, maybe, the best metallica album? Or even ride the lightning or and justice for all? There are a few things they used in ride the lightning that were made by mustaine, but come on, metallica was at their best around 1986 to 1990, no way it was because of mustaine, even if someone brings the "mustaine help" in discussion when talking about their popularity, lars and james could have had the success they got even without mustaine...

Dave was an obnoxious drunk. James kicked him out. Dave is still mad 40 years later. That's basically every Dave Mustaine video on YT. When Dave can actually treat his bandmates better than how bad he claims Lars and James treated him, and actually keep the same lineup for more than 6 months, then I might actually take him serious.
James kicked his dog. Then Dave punched him for it. That is the real reason why he got the boot. They were all drunk obnoxious assholes, let's not kid ourselves here. However, when you punch your guitar player that is a major problem. You can act crazy all you want but if you hit someone it's over.
@@nightfightsday it's rock and roll, I don't expect people that trash hotel rooms to have good moral character. But it bothers me that people that interview Dave don't hold him to the fire. He needs to be honest about his conduct toward Ellefson and all the other people he has sht on the past 4 decades in Megadeth. And he needs to stfu about any stuff he wrote while in Metallica because that belongs to the band, not him. They picked up the pieces and continued on with Kirk. Why he doesn't understand that is beyond me. It's like Glenn Frey telling Henley you can't use Desperado or Tequila Sunrise if he left the band.
If I was in that situation I would have kicked him out too! From memory wasn't the final straw when he was fucked up one night and kicked the tourbus driver out of the driver's seat , drove himself and almost crashed? He complained a lot about being kicked out but he was a dangerous drunk! If he didn't want to be kicked out he needed to sober up and get serious about the band. They were going nowhere if they didn't kick him out.
@@charlesdjones1I would almost 100 percent agree with everything you said, with that being said, Dave pleaded with them for a warning, and to get a second chance. I just wonder how quickly they axed him. Was this ongoing for several weeks or months or was he really let go quickly and unfairly??
