DAVID ESSEX has arrived at a most interesting junction in his career. Standing at the crossroads.Out On The Street, his fourth studio album paints a versatile self-portrait of an artist strolling down several musical avenues. Not quite sure which direction to follow, he splits his time between frightening dark alleyways and more comfortable lover's quarters.

Thank You for posting, Essex came onto the music scene when the talent was vastly competitive. His music is in no way commercialized, I appreciate his musical direction here.

I was 5yrs old sitting on my Mums shoulders in the Apollo Glasgow when I first saw David live, my Mum and I walked home up Maryhill Rd with our bag of chips and my Granny told my Mum off for having me up so late, I never slept a wink that night as I was so high from the concert,I bought all of David's albums and I was a big fan. 5yrs later I got a bad fever and was given the last rights, to everyone's surprise I woke up the next day, I don't remember much about it except having a long dream where I kicked Bruce Mcbride's ass all over Silverstone. After I got home for a few days a special letter arrived for me, It was huge, when I opened it there was a poster inside of David on the Silver Dream Racer, he signed it and said, " To my special little champion Stuart, Rock On" , you just don't forget things like that in life, thanks David, you made a little guy feel on top of the world.

Probably his best album along with gold and ivory. Shame many people have not heard it and only associate him with being a pin up for teenagers and hold me close. Rock on is a classic track and should be spoken about in the same way other classic 70s singles are. It never dates as it was so different from anything else around. Mr Essex is truly a national treasure.

I've known David Essex through this album, and it's to me pretty good. Too bad people don't know more about this one album..

i am using my husbands page and he will probably not be too impressed that i have liked this and am contributing this post. I was 12 years old when "out on the street" came out and my sister and I and just been given tape/radio recorders , I can remember playing this over and over until the tape stretched. Technology certainly has it's benefits. Check out 'Street fight', 'Lamplight 'and 'Rock on', Early 70's stuff. Sxx

have followed David right from the early 70's, bought all the early albums as soon as they hit the shops and then took them home and played them non stop. LOVED this one, think it showed that he wasn't just a pretty face, thanks for posting it.

Because DE was very much sold as a pop star this album never got the recognition it deserved. This track deals with prostitution and very much the seedy low life. A very underrated album.

The whole album is gorgeous...I will ask myself again and again which are the reasons for such an unrated performance... :-(

Whilst 'All The Fun Of The Fair' must have sold a lot more copies, in my experience more fans say 'Out On The Street' is their favourite DE album than any other.

I think his good looks went against him as a credible artist. His earlier stuff, plus this album was less commercial and much better for it. His version of Stay With Me Baby is brilliant, very underrated at the time
