@@TheFunkloft I sure do miss 16HP, but please understand DEE has a deep sense of duty with his musical output, just like Leonard Cohen had. DEE does what has to be done, regardless of fans' expectations, which is a very rare thing today. You can also view this as an artistic developement - far from repackaging the same album/style all over again.
@@pretached I don't know if you've seen them perform nowadays? They went from humble, down to earth esotheric geniuses to arty farty, make up wearing wall of sound creating hipsters. Just horrible.
@@TheFunkloft well, I did see several re-incarnations of Wovenhand and I do dig it. Mind you, one man's treasure is another man's trash... Not sure if I follow your somewhat artificial distinction between "esotheric geniuses" and "arty farty hipsters" ... FYI: eversince early 16HP days DEE wore makeup onstage and was a huge Einstürzende Neubauten fan (and in recent years has a project going with Neubauten's Hacke, Risha). I don't like musical ghettos of noise, alt-country, goth while believe in a musical multi-verse. If you know a bit DEE tastes, it is all about seemingly disparate influences of Dylan, Cohen, Joy Division, Gun Club, Neubauten, Suicide, Om, High on Fire and it all comes through in his music. Just in 16HP the noisy/harsh parts were subtly implicit and now it is very much explicit (so maybe you are just not into noise music, which is also obviously fine?)
@@pretached That is simply untrue. Saw them plenty of times and NEVER did he wear bloody mascara (!). My main problem with later Wovenhand work is that every song has basically the same chord progression while 16HP and early Wovenhand was much more diverse. For example, the difference between Sackcloth & Ashes and Folklore is enormous. I also believe that DEE has lost his head somewhere right before the split and became some sort of religious nutcase instead of the fiery preacher he used to be. Possibly also the main reason Pascal, Jean-Yves and David parted ways.
I am a Grunge Fan, but when I listened to 16 Horsepower for the first time several years ago I was fascinated by this kind of music and David Eugene Edwards voice. After all these years I still feel the same.
Wonderful! I never knew this documentary existed, great to see all these years later. I was fortunate to work with 16 Horsepower back in 1997 when they toured Europe, I had met the band when they supported Shane MacGowan & The Popes on a number of shows in the US in 1995 and they asked me to work with them 2 years after. I absolutely adored this band from the first time I saw them, I was totally captivated by their sight and sound and they left a lasting impression on me. One of my concert going highlights was when they played in Dublin back in 2001 and DEE dedicated a Joy Division song to me which was great as during the US tour with Shane MacGowan I remember chatting with David about Joy Division as it turned out we were both huge fans. I bought a Video cassette of Joy Division to watch on the tour bus and gave it to the bass player at the time, Kevin Sol, at the end of the tour... I wonder if he still has it...??
Funny how fate leads me to the rare fellow Joy Division fans.the fact that there are others out there is one of the comforting things in life.captivated by this music also,recently found it though
I would love to hear more stories from you. Teenaged me picked up Sackcloth 'n' Ashes from a used CD bin at a record store back in '97, based on being peripherally aware of the band's existence from being a giant Nick Cave fan at the time. Hooked me quicker than any album before or since.
@@LoveOneAnotherHeSaid When Shane was kicked out of The Pogues he formed a new band called Shane MacGowan & The Popes that toured and recorded from 1992 onwards. I worked with them for 5 years. And being Irish I know exactly what pogue means but 'Pogue Mahone' is a bastardised form of the Irish 'póg mo thóin' which means 'kiss my arse' just in case anybody didn't know but I reckon that's fairly unlikely at this stage...
I had the pleasure of grabbing a 16 Horsepower CD in Edmonton at a HMV or something like that about 1996. It only had like 5 or 6 songs but I was INSTANTLY hooked. Amazing sound, love their groove and darkscape imagery.
Thanks for posting the full version. All the segmented files online no longer work that I came across. I remember receiving a tape from Denver when I moved back to Colorado Springs in 1996 that I got from the Afghan Whigs (promotional). It was a single with a 16 Horsepower song on the flip side. I've been following David and the bands ever since. I'm not religious, I am Native American funny enough--since I've read his music is influenced or contains NA rhythms, but I never feel like he's preaching in his music, which is an issue he generally has with the "Christian Rock" genre, or had . . . I read in an interview. It was as if the musicians put religion first and music second. I don't feel as though either 16 Horsepower or Woven Hand does that regardless of the content of the lyrics. He tells beautiful stories that come from his religion in song. Thanks again.

Wow David I've seen a lot of documentaries but nothing as raw and truthful as this, it is truly a gift from God that I came to watch this, I've been listening to your music for some time now off and on yet never came across this, its so inspiring, I've been writing and making music for over half my life now and struggling to use the talent God has given me, I related to so much in this film ( especially the beginning part where you speak of your favourite style of music that drew you in, same here) that I feel it was a Devine moment, thank you so much this film has changed me, God bless you and yours my friend, this is so inspiring, thank you.
I am humbled to be able to hear an artist who is this committed to his work and vision and is able to accomplish it in an ever captivating way. Thank you very much for uploading this fascinating piece of faith and art and person.

Sounds like my own approach to music. I loved Sixteen Horsepower, but discovered them after they had disbanded. David’s music reminds me of the music of another David- David Ben Yeshai, the Biblical David. I love the Dylan influence; I could sense in in “Low Estate.”
I bought a box of cds from a co-worker, & Sackcloth 'N' Ash was in it. While I was downloading them onto my laptop I came across Sackcloth and searched it on Spotify. I really like the music. Now i'm a fan maybe years late but still a fan.
Other than really liking and resonating with his music, I feel like I can relate to pretty much everything he says, even though I'm not really a Christian. I mean I was raised Catholic but I don't consider myself religious, and I don't go to church. I do believe in the power of music and the power of words, and I do have my own spirituality somehow, but I don't really call any of that God. But the difference is quite subtle when I think of it. You know what? I think I'll start praying to Mr D.E.E. from now on ahahah
Know you might have said that in jest, but no, Mr. D.E.E. wouldn't think that would be a good thing to do. He is a solid true Christian and believes in the God who loves us, the God who made us and the God who will judge us. He loves us so much that He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, who paid our sin debt in full for all those who put their faith in Him. That is so that on Judgement Day after we die, we will not be judged for our sins and will be able to live with Him in Heaven. These are very hard days and the days ahead will be even harder. Please think about it and repent of your sins and come to the Lord who is waiting for you, the God who loves you. God bless you and will be praying for you.
I have no desire to convert to christianity, but Wovenhand and David's other projects have always been deeply moving and unique. Glad to discover this documentary!!
I think David was very wise to mention joy division and nick cave, which is "christian music" all right. Just think of "the eternal" from closer (1980) where Ian sings about the catholic devotion of "inner communion". Or in the case of cave (very much influenced by the catholic gothic writer flannery O'Connor's "wise blood") think not only of "the good son" album (1990) but of "there is a kingdom" (1996) and practically every song he did with the seeds have that christian flavour... also of fear of damnation. Apart from that David should have mentioned emmylou Harris "angel band" as well - country music is often influenced by the christian heritage of the southern states, the glorious bible belt
Having read all the comments I would like to take a few minutes to put in my 2 cents.. it may turn into 4, or more, cuz I have a lot on my mind and it's not easy for me to express what's there in a cohesive fashion. I'm going to recommend you watch and listen to the collab with Carpenter Brut, Fab Tool. As I consider it I remember the words he spoke in another interview about people being like cattle and how one commentor responded negatively to it. In the very beginning of Fab Tool is a giant dead cow- I wondered to myself, could there be a connection, after all these years, and a common train of thought between carpenter brut and him? DEE has expressed many times straightforwardly or hintingly about thinking for ourselves. I wrote him a letter some years ago to thank him for the words he sings.. I use them as a study guide for bible verses, and over the years, I have found a lot of interesting ideas, answers, and things to ponder by picking a word from a song and googling, like he did on the couch in this documentary. I don't care if he wears makeup because I'm pretty sure it's how he's trying to get his message across. Maybe he's showing his love and care for females or people from India.. there's a verse that says there's no distinction between male or female Jew or Greek..(I don't remember the rest, you can look it up, like I will when I'm done) ..we're all the same in God's eyes. I have 3 adult sons who have tried every kinda hair doings over the years- bald, dyed, mohawks in various lengths, mullets, bleached.. it didn't matter to me..they were expressing their individuality where they were in their growth process. We've all gotten older seen changes and stuff happening that isn't in accordance with God's will..and what did Ian Curtis say in Heart and Soul about foundations?!? There's bound to be some cynicism and righteous anger popping up.. thanks for reading.. God bless us, everyone And may we bless Him as the psalmist said..

When he was basically saying that he was the boss and who doesn't like it (band members) can bounce! Which, I guess is what ultimately happened. I'm rambling now. I'll stop.
That's not really how I interpreted that last bit. Feels more like he's saying "I'm doing this (unusual) thing and these guys who are playing with me have different intentions, and they could play music with someone else yet they choose to do so with me, which I think is amazing." Didn't come across as dark or "I'm the boss" kinda thing. More just bluntly stating reality.
"What business do I have playing a Bob Dylan-song.." How about you made it at least a thousand times better? I'm not joking. Dylan may be your hero, but he's not mine. You are.
Humans are the only species that kills one another over what they have been told happens after you die, and we do not have the intellect to see the irony in that frame of mind. I don't suggest being anything like me. I can't say if everyone else is rabble or not, but if understanding that Christ don't like killing no matter what the reason for, makes one rabble then I indeed am. To me, and perhaps me alone, organized religion is one of the greatest threats to mankind there ever was or will be. In my opinion what is being taught today strays so far from what I think Christ wanted from us that we have missed the message completely. We rabble thank you for stopping by and spreading the love.
I see that the reply to my original post, which prompted my second reply has been removed. For what it is worth, the years that have passed since have only strengthened my resolve that the church of today has strayed far from Christ. The rise of orange/jesus, the so called "Chosen one" proves this beyond doubt to me. I can't recall any stories from my indoctrination where Christ was some sort of superhero or patriot willing to kill to protect borders, his property, or his money. Churches here, especially the Baptist church I grew up in have for many decades been political institutions. This does not change or lessen my love of Christ. It just keeps the words "Christ wept" on my mind far more than I wish it was. If he is what we say, and to me he is, why do we worry about anything other than getting closer to him? Just another opinion, but I don't think it was force of arms that brought Rome to Christianity. Just the opposite to me. They killed them in any way they could come up with and yet there they were willing to help tie their own hands if it helped. You do not find that sort of love and faith in any stone statue god. Peace to you and yours.
Careful. Some folks don't allow one to have a different point of view on life. I get the feeling they have a Pavlovian reaction to things without fully understanding where their reaction comes from. I enjoy David's music a great deal, but I also could do without the advertisement of religion, any religion. It is however in this case I suppose important to the content.
I think you all misunderstand, he isnt advertising religion, he believes. And that is what makes the difference, it might not be your truth, but it's his truth. And that is something you can hear.
