An analysis of two very similar works by the North American director David Fincher: Zodiac (2007), with Jake Gyllenhaal and Robert Downey Jr., and Mindhunter (2017), with Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany. In this video we explore the differences between directing a series and a film, even when the two are very similar in their narrative and characters.
Mindhunter is an American television series that was released on Netflix on October 13, 2017. It is based on the book Mind Hunter: Inside FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit by Mark Olshaker and John E. Douglas. Directed by David Fincher, Asif Kapadia, Tobias Lindholm and Andrew Douglas, the series is set in 1977 and focuses on two FBI agents - played by Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany - who interview serial killers in prison to try to solve ongoing cases, including Edmund Kemper.
Zodiac tells the story of the search for the notorious serial killer known as "Zodiac's killer," who murdered in the San Francisco Bay and surrounding areas during the late 1960s and early 1970s, leaving several victims and making fun of the police with letters and encrypted messages that he sent to the newspapers. Today, the case continues to be one of the most famous unsolved crimes in the United States. Fincher, Vanderbilt and producer Brad Fischer spent eighteen months directing their own research and finding out about the murders.
