I've met both Dom and David in clinics that they did at a store I worked at in the eighties. Hard to keep your jaw in place when seeing these guys play and do their thing. I believe they were both Sabian sponsored clinics. I was a Guitar bass player but still blown away. I wish I could find the photos I had of meeting these guys. Also saw David play with Alain Caron group. Amazing.

“You got to funkafize…”. Garibaldi slathered this tune with such a slick, greasy feel that it will actually lubricate the squeaky hinges on your front door, which you will have to open to greet the police when they arrive to insist that you turn down the volume on your stereo system. What a great band, what a great tune, what a fantastic drummer…👍

Stars aligned for me in 2016 when TOP played on Maui. DG had rejoined sometime before but to my surprise Rocco had recovered enough from his transplant to also be able to play. I sat in the 1st balcony seat to the side of the band and could see what they were doing. Band was great but MAN! what a rhythm section! As a drummer it was like going to school.

Correction: That’s McChord AFB in Lakewood, WA. My Uncle James was Chief Master Sgt of the MPs on base around that time. Our band played the NCO clubs on Ft Lewis and McChord the summer my twin brother (drummer) and I graduated high school. Crazy times…

Tower of Power was huge in Fresno when I was a teen in the 70s. They played the Fresno State Baseball field about 76 with Flo & Eddie's Turtles opening. I was 16. I was there. If the Bay Area didn't love them, we would have claimed them. They were huge, the one band everybody loved. I'm sure Garibaldi was aware of their base in Fresno back then.

Really refreshing hearing the story of a killer drummer who was a 'normal kid' playing through his school concert bands, and didn't even start playing a proper kit until he was 18; shows what the power of motivation and focus can achieve, regardless of your age!

Incredible! David was such a great influence for a whole generation of drummers. I had the pleasure of meeting him when i performed at the Yamaha Groove Night 2003 in LA. I was so awestruck when i discovered that David would be one of the participants. He turned out to be the most gracious person. He told me he would play in my hometown Oslo that same year and that he would get in touch, and he DID! I last heard him with Tof P a couple of years ago. He had little time between soundcheck and concert but he still wanted to squeeze in a quick coffee and talk. Thanks again Dom and the Session Panel!

Great interview. Thank you so much. TOP, and especially DG, have been a part of my DNA since '72 when "Down To The Nightclub" came over the car radio. I had to pull over and stop to try to figure out just what the heck that drummer was doing. Been a lifetime of inspiration (and figuring) ever since.

What a wonderful interview with Dave Garibaldi. You are an insightful interviewer and musician. You listen! Dave G. is an amazing musician drummer, but what an amazing person. I have listened to Dave G since the early 70s. I followed TOP throughout the 50+ years and celebrated their 50th at Paramount in Oakland. Dave is one of my mentors as a person and musician. Keep up the good work.

Very Informative interview David, just loved it! I got dystonia in my right foot (bass drum) when I was 30, and had to reverse my feet and relearn how to play all over again. I’m 54 now and still learning new ways to make stuff work. Anyway, thanks!

Wow Jimmy, I hear you. I am really glad to hear that you were determined to not let it knock you out of drumming! Great for you, and for all who get to hear you and to play with you. At one of my peaks, in ‘83 I badly tore my left shoulder. As soon as I could I would go and just sit at my drums. I began to come up with things to practice using only three limbs, ha called it “three limbed blues”. I went on to do four-limb drumming again, after years of painful recovery. However a ‘74 lifting injury with spine-disc injury that badly worsened, ended it all for a while. Again, it’s good to hear your story of successfully switching to left foot on bass. That is a total full body twist. Congratulations!

Years back I was playing in a band with an excellent drummer and bass player and we did lot of TOP. I got a call to be a soloist for a rhythm section master class by The TOP rhythm section. I thought I had experienced good feeling grooves. 1 measure into it after i could close my dropped jaw I stuck the horn in my mouth and forty five minutes later i felt like they played the horn and I was just holding it. I didnt have to do anything. Life changing for me in the best way.

My apologies if this comment seems inappropriate, but I’ll give it a whirl. I was severely alcoholic for about ten years, beginning around age 30. During that time I managed to significantly injure my brain and central nervous system. My drumming abilities eventually withered away and I stopped playing all together. It’s pretty much the typical, or predictable, story that one would expect. I was fired from bands, my reputation became one of inconsistency and unreliability, I let down a lot of people who put their trust in me, and so on. I sobered up in September of 2016, and I surveyed the carnage as best I could. I discovered that my physical coordination in general was in poor condition, and my mental acuity was definitely compromised. To this day I have a bit of a mental stammer when I speak, so my words don’t always match up with my thoughts. Walking is still a challenge as I trip over things, bump into things, drop things…not horribly so, but certainly unlike I had been before the destruction occurred. As for my drumming, I’ve had to rebuild and reconstruct my neural networks and learn to coordinate my limbs with my brain. I’ve progressed remarkably well, I must admit, but there remains a disconnect at times between what I hear and what actually happens. My left hand will occasionally flutter on my snare drum, sometimes to the point where my backbeat is effectively lost. My right hand regularly drops the stick when playing my hi hat, which I’ve learned to anticipate to a large degree. My bass drum foot gets fatigued easily and is difficult to control for accuracy and volume. It’s been a really difficult process to endure, not only physically but spiritually. I’ve had to keep the faith and accept the reality of it all. I think the most important lesson I’ve learned from this is to be grateful that I can play drums at all, let alone having earned the privilege of playing live again. I’ve rebuilt trust with a group that had been forced to let me go when I was sick, and we’re enjoying four very successful years together in our local music scene.
