Me too, drew. Back in the day I made two big 3-inch binders filled with different Modern Drummer articles and exercises that I used to practice to. I still have 'em. Your post made me pull them out of the closet and look at them for the first time in many years. At a glance, I see that I have two great articles from Dave Garibaldi titled 'Changuito's Groove' (from Nov. 1995) and 'Developing the Afro-Cuban Feel' (from May 1996). I used to practice both of these a lot. Also like you, I still have a box or two of old MD's from the 80's and 90's. I've thought about digitally scanning them myself into my computer and tossing the mags, or buying digitally archived copies from MD if they're available and reasonably priced. Do you or anyone else here have any experience buying digital archives (preferably everything they've issued) from MD?

Bhola Oates I just got through subscribing to Modern Drummer for a year. My subscription was just a print + digital subscription. That meant that I would receive the printed copy at my house and I could also browse through that month’s issue online. It wasn’t until after that subscription ran out that I decided to subscribe to their Archives on a monthly basis for $5.99/month. It was like hitting the MD jackpot! With that little monthly subscription, I was able to view AND download every single issue of Modern Drummer in pdf format. And I did it! Did it take up a lot of room? Yep. But there are some gems in there! Old issues with Bonham, Gadd, Rich, Bruford, Stewart Copeland, etc. I canceled my subscription after the Peart tribute issue was available to me. I figured that was a good place to stop, for now. He was on the cover probably more than anybody else up to this point. The state of the magazine is a little sad these days though. Last December’s issue had Danny Carey on the cover. 13 years earlier, in July 2006 I think it was, also had Carey on the cover but the ‘06 issue was about 100 pages longer than the ‘19 issue. And so goes the way of print media these days. I remember at some point in the ‘90s the magazine shortened its pages by a little less than a centimeter making the magazine slightly more rectangular than before. Oh well...if you have a desktop or a laptop or a few thumb drives, I would definitely recommend subscribing to the MD archives. It’s definitely worth the money. And you can come up with your own little system for naming each issue like I did. I need to go browse through some of those issues. I don’t want them to sit there and go to waste.

I think most drumeo staff are djent fanboys, so for them polyrhythms, polymeters and odd times make advanced "grooves".

It’s definitely up there, but I have to give it to “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover.” It may not be as impressive technically, but nothing grooves like it.

I just saw him play live with TOP. Evidently he's doing ok now, thank the Lord. At 70, I worry about him.

J T it is basically a motif. a common tool used by improv players to structure a jam or begin/end a song. Book ends means Using this Groove to begin the vinyl and end it. instead of using it for a particular song they use it to theme the album with a Jam sort of feel, like Dave says.

Yeah, I knew it was from The Incident but that is definitely the song. It's not exactly the same but it's pretty similar.

Uh... Yeah if you really feel you needed to make that point but that was obviously a given. I was simply implying it reminded me of a PT song I'd heard, I wasn't implying the PT song came first. But if you think it's important to let everyone know that the Oakland Stroke was first then OK.
