Your sound and delay on “Set the Controls....” absolutely jaw dropping. His sound on Pompeii is so damn amazing. Binson makes it sound so loose and it’s like he can’t play a bad note with it. I really hope T-Rex gets it right and we get something cool and reliable.
Thanks! The Binson had a unique tone and the Boonar does a great job replicating it. The Binson had a fixed time - 310ms on the single head - and it really makes everything sound huge and almost a mix between echo and reverb.
Amazing how you just cant do any wrong. Id like to see you do a video of a pedal or amp youre not familiar with, and you just spend time dialing it in, uncut. I feel like i could learn alot just watching ans listening to your process. Cheers from Chicago!!
Thank you so much for this! I am a delay novice. Hearing the repeats separated from the track helps approximate the delay enough to get me by! Right on as always. Again your efforts are much appreciated!
Thanks Bjorn! You are instrumental in making me play, and sound like David Gilmour. I, for years have used your backing tracks, jammin tracks, tone and equipment tutorials. The green Russian muff, and this delay demo have refined my abilities to a level I never thought I'd be able to achieve. Again thank you, keep up the stellar work, and peace!... fom California
The Boss giga delay is great for these delays, and pretty inexpensive used. Thanks to Bjorn we now have the right milliseconds to program. Thanks Bjorn.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge Bjorn. I hadn’t figured out Run Like Hell in the 23 years I’ve been playing. I dialed in the delay this past weekend like you suggested and WOOOO! Thank you sir 😊
I love the new format of your videos with the instructional speaking at the beginning followed by you playing. But you can’t leave out the amazing intro music of your past videos. Love the beard.
Thank you for always wonderful performance! I am most interested in how to use "delay" of "DAVID GILMOR" All songs were perfectly reproduced :) I am not good at guitar :( But someday I'd like to be able to play songs of "DAVID GILMOR" :) Thank you so much♪ miu from KYOTO JAPAN
floyd canvas miu I just got interested in guitars and gears over a year ago. David's licks are veeeeerrry eeeaasy but it's impossible to have the same feels as him when he plays those notes.
I always thought David used a Boss DD-2 at times in the 80’s...it certainly nails a lot of his delay tones, digital but still retains some warmth unlike the later DD-3’s etc.
This is a great video - I've never seen this much detail on this aspect of Gilmour's sound! I happened across your video, since I recently posted on my channel two Floyd covers (Brain Damage/Eclipse and Comfortably Numb), on both of which I used a Maestro Echoplex tape delay, and threw in some slide guitar to emulate that early Floyd style echo, including the violin effect. Have you ever known Gilmour to use a tape delay? Thanks for posting!
Thanks! He did use the old Binson for years and although the sound is similar to tape, it's designed based on a steel drum. I've never seen him use tape machines although I'm sure they had some Copycats and Space Echos lying around.
@@jburdsinfuse what are both of you talking about? Repeats means number of times the delay unit repeats the incoming signal, until its no longer audible.. I can hear 10 repeats on this video but he states it is set at 7 repeats.. Maybe he was hearing 7 repeats in the room but the signal he recorded gets 10 repeats that we then hear when playing the youtube clip, I dont know.. but you are not making any sense
@@simonbilleng2748 if you play a note, and it repeats seven times, you hear it seven times. If you play two notes back to back, the first series of delays is likely not finished. So now you’re hearing a string of notes, i.e., more than seven. If you have a tap tempo, tap it in, play what sounds good. No need to over complicate it with an exact note count in a demo. It’s music, not astrophysics.
@@jburdsinfuse but a delay unit doesnt work like that. You cant select how many notes it will repeat and then it stops. At least most dont. It will gradually decrease until you cant hear it anymore. Thats why I was raising the question how something that is clearly audible for 10+ times is considered by Bjorn to be a 7 note repeat setting. And for your other remark about this being music and not physics.. have you seen bjorns website? 😂 there are a lot of us who take gilmour stuff seriously.
I got a question. How many miliseconds can the MXR digital delay system 1 go to? Because I need a digital rack mount delay. Just as long as it can go over 440 milliseconds. I saw one on reverb for about $300 Australian. If you don't know. That's fine.
I would imagine it goes over 440ms, but you might want to send the seller a message. Most sellers on there are pretty good about letting you know, or at least pointing you in the right direction. Might also want to look into something like the strymon timeline. You could essentially run it as a rack unit and have it out of the way, while also having MIDI control, tap tempo (can add external tap pedal, or expression) presets, MS/BPM readouts on LCD, stereo ins and outs, and much more. It's a bit more expensive than a 300 even used, but will last a lifetime and is extremely versatile! It has so many algorithms with deep editing, or you can keep it pretty basic too. I'm assuming you're not new to gear, I figured I would throw that out there anyway! I don't work for strymon by the way, I just can't say a single bad thing about it! Cheaper alternative in the same ballpark of options as timeline would be the Boss DD500. I mainly mentioned this because you could get so much more out of those units than you could a single rack unit. Especially for the price you're willing to pay. :)
@@ripplebear Hmm maybe but rather than have "Delay Pedals" I was thinking more about "Delay Rack Units" because I'm thinking about making a rack pedal board I was thinking about the boss rdd20 one for Run Like Hell and some U2 stuff and another one for leads But the downside of the rdd 20 is that they only go the maximum of 400 milliseconds but for leads I can have it at 400 milliseconds and Run Like Hell and U2 stuff can be at ether 380 or 390 But thanks for the advice I'll keep it at the back of my head :D :)
Nice job as always, Bjorn! Can you send me info how would you set TC Nova Delay for Comfortably Numb and Shine on? How ms, how many repeats, which mix level, and which tipe of delay, tape or digital? I would be grateful if you could help me. Thanks! Cheers from Croatia!
Hey Bjorn, thanks for your last answer. Here I have another question: Which is the more preferable set up at the end of the modularion line? Reverb > Delay or Delay > Reverb It is weird because I have the Flashback, and a full analog reverb pedal by SL Amp. The flashback does not take the volume down, but the reverb take at least 3 dB of the sound. Rarely I use the reverb.... but the 700 ms setup on the delay which is preferable just for the solos, does not fit for the verses or any accord style picking, so I want to launch my reverb pedal for those parts of my songs.
Reverb is usually placed last because you want to simulate a room ambience. Don't know why you experience a drop. It might be that your ears perceive it as a drop because you loose some dynamics in the tone or there are some issues between the pedals. Are your TC set for true bypass or buffered? Setting it to true bypass might cause a drop if you have many pedals on your board. I've written about reverb in this feature www.gilmourish.com/?p=199
The delay is absolutely ok. It don't drop. I do not use buffers because all my pedals are true-bypassed. I do not want to sell this fine handmade reverb pedal and buy a hall of fame :D, but probably that going to happen :/
I have a question in regards to all tube BINSON ECHOREC - ECHO UNITS copies available today, in your opinion what's the unit that you found to be best sounding overall that has a close warm analog tube like sounds when comparing to a Tube BINSON? Great playing....Thank you so much for all great playing and videos.
There have been some attempts at building replicas of the Binson. Very limited quantities and I've never tried them. Among the pedals, that don't have tubes, I think the Dawner Prince Boonar comes close. At least in terms of features and how the multiple head setups manages to capture that reverb like echo. The Strymon Volante is also great.
Hello Bjorn. I have a question on delay times. For the 87-89 tour, David's delay time for Comfortably Numb was around 650 ms. It's this the same for the pulse tour as well? Also, What Do You Want From Me sounds very similar to Raise My Rent, are the delay times the same? I'm guessing around 440, but I could be wrong. Oh! And one more (sorry), is there any way you could demonstrate one day how David gets that delay for the intro to Time?
Most of the 80s and 90s were done with tap tempo delay so it's easy to figure out the time signatures. He mostly prefer something around 6-700 as explained in this video, with aprox 6-7 repeats. Time was recorded with a Binson Echorec, which has multiple heads for different patterns. Search for my review of the Dawner Prince Boonar for setup references.
Hey, just thought of something. If I put the second delay AFTER the first delay, aren't I going to be delaying the 'delayed (and repeats) ' signal? Do we need to split the signal going into the first delay to parallel the input into the two delays or can we simply place one delay after another?
Watching this I have to wonder if David Gilmour took such a technical approach as to break it down to the numbers like this or if he just kept messing around with the knobs until he liked what he heard.
You have to get technical when trying to describe how it was done... or could have been done. But, if you look at the time signatures you'll see that for the early days with the Binson, he mostly kept it at maximum delay time, which I guess sounded the most like echo and not reverb. For other stuff, as shown here, the times are tempos based on the song bpm. So yes, I think he knew exactly what he wanted and needed.
@@gilmourishofficial Yes, my comment was not meant to be critical at all, I was only speculating. I've been playing guitar and other instruments since the mid 1970s and I have never gotten into being highly technical with my playing style or whatever effects devises I use. Basically almost everything I have done has been by ear and feel. Your videos are very good and have helped my playing as I'm sure it has helped many others.
Love your stuff (both your website and YT vids). Quick question: Do you think the Joyo Analog Delay could pull of Echo Rec sounds close enough for tracks from DSotM? The song that immediately comes to mind is Run Like Hell, but I'm sure there are others. Joyo is sending me one because another pedal I bought from them failed within warranty. It's hard to find concrete specs on it but I see a number of people stating that the Joyo Series 2 Analog Delay tops out at 440ms - would be super nice to just know that's right in the ballpark at max delay! Could you do a review of one of these?
I haven't tried that particular pedal so I can't really tell. Analog delay is usually a bit darker sounding than both tape and digital. It should be fully capable of doing David's 70s tones, with a faster 300ms setting. For Run Like Hell and the more modern and pristine sounding delays, you probably want a digital unit with brighter repeats.
hey dude, awesome work! Pardon my ignorance, but what song are you playing in the 2:15m of the video? I asked google and didn't get an answer. I feel like I know it but can't remember the name! thanks!
Do you personally use an effects loop for delay or echo? My amp is set on the edge of break up and then I use pedals for overdriven tones. Never liked the sound of time based stuff in the front of the amp even though it’s last in the signal path. Maybe I’m missing something?
It's a matter of taste and how your amp is voiced. I run all my effects into the front end of the amp but I keep the amps clean. A lot of people like to run modulation and delays in the loop when using the amp for breakup, overdrive and distortion. This provides cleaner sounding effects. However, a bit of breakup will also create some very cool and unusual delay and modulation effects. Again, a matter of taste and what tones you need then and there.
Yes. David used a chorus in the 80s and 90s and an Electric Mistress on the Wall tour of the early 80s and the recent Rattle That Lock tour. The MXR has much more of a jet type of flanging, which is great for VH but not for Floyd. I guess the closest match would be a Boss CE5.
Beautiful video! Thanks a lot! I have a question. How to set time (ms) on Flashback properly if there is no screen to see exact delay time. I mean physically using knobs of the pedal. Thanks in advance
Thank you! I’ll try :) But, roughly, where should I put Delay Time knob (at what “time”) to get those ms that you used. For example 750 ms or 380 ms Thanks!
Max K I have same question.I would guess you look at what your time delay range is on the effect e.g 50-620ms. And work out where the non should be e.g in the above range (50-62s) a 310ms delay would be just very slightly under half way .
