Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers questions from off of his Guitar Blog website...
Q). I'm a huge Pink Floyd fan and of course that means I'm also a fan of David Gilmour's guitar style. He plays extremely smooth and I was wondering if you could break it down in a guitar lesson what kind of scales he uses. While doing this, I was hoping that you could also demonstrate how he applies the scale shapes with maybe a few 'Gilmour style' guitar lick examples. Thanks!
Reid -- Lincoln, Nebraska, (NE). USA
A). The approach used by David Gilmour for the bulk of his scale ideas, is largely based upon the Blues scale and Minor Pentatonic, with a lot of reference to the Major 2nd degree from the Dorian mode. It's quick to hear on many of his solos, such as the one he plays in the Pink Floyd song, "Yet Another Movie." That solo is largely pentatonic thrashing for the most part, but it's also full of feeling. And, when we analyze the way he uses the; Blues, his bends and the obvious strong connection he has toward players like; Clapton, Jeff Beck and the Muddy Waters & John Lee Hooker sound... we end up with an instantly recognizable tone only associated to the David Gilmour style.

Thank you for making the correction, Andrew. I know it's a small thing, but we should honor the man. As always, excellent video.

When I'd realized it, (after only going off of the spelling in the emailed question - which was incorrect), I made all the corrections, re-rendered the video and then re-posted the entire lesson. I couldn't leave it that way and feel good about it.

Hey Andrew, love the lesson! Would you be willing to do the same style lesson, except using the Mixolydian chromatics in a pentatonic scale? Thanks!

david gilmour's best solo is the "another brick in the wall" solo. just take a listen. it's unreal. it's also his great feeling for rhythm that shines through.

ConcreteKOS mother, yes, it sounds nice too. he's just a great player. but if i needed to choose the one i like most it would be the "another brick in the wall" solo.

BigEdWo Also Hey You? That one blew my mind!

Alex Zablah you know, i like that solo also, we can easily find some more if we want to. but if we talk about the best, which is obv. just one, we need to make a decision.. i think "the wall" offers great solos all over the place. Right?

Great lesson, demo, and analysis! I hope you'll consider doing something like this for some of the greatest Blue Oyster Cult's "Spectres", and "Mirrors" album style tunes, like: "Fireworks", "I Love the Night", "Nosferatu",... "Dr. Music", In Thee".... Thanks!!!!

Are you talking about Howlin' wolf's guitar playing as gilmour's inspiration? or are you talking about Hubert Sumlin mainly, for sure I suspect Sumlim more, although I do know Wolf played Guitar to a degree as well.

Hi Andrew, an unrelated question: what pickups do you have in that strat? Particularly the bridge and neck. Thanks for the videos! John
@andrewwasson

Thanks for watching... those are both Seymour Duncan's. In the neck its a Cool Rail and in the bridge its a Hot Rail. I've had them in there for almost twenty years now, and would highly recommend them.
