Not many fans knows this, but most of the backing band in this video and the other 1978 promo videos, are David's close friends and his brother, all from David's pre-Pink Floyd band, Joker's Wild.
The chorus from the backup singers is phenomenal, it really drives the sound over the top. I also love how David has to turn to the girls and give the, the nod to start singing.
I have been a fan of Pink Floyd's since 1970 when I was 12. Saw my first concert on PFloyd's "Animal's" Tour in 1977. To me the Pink Floyd sound and soul is David Gilmour. I know and appreciate the great contribution of Roger Waters, but David has the sound. As far as solo careers, David's music still moves me and I hope to see him again one day.
Colette McKinney .......yes and David “aged” really well too. Quite often guys (musicians) who were real “lookers” when they were young, aren’t treated so kindly by the years. The lifestyle catches up with them I guess but many don’t remain handsome in the way DG has. I think David always had a “kindly” face too (gorgeous when he smiled), that never changed either.
What utterly amazes me about David is that his personalty seems so soulful and mellow and he seem to be such a beautiful combination of vulnerabilty and masculitnity...............aaaaaaaaaaaaaah.........not to mention his talent and physical beauty of course ;)
@@Redguard677 It is in the same way that "Twist and Shout" is a Beetles song. In the same way the "Blue Swede Shoes" is an Elvis song. In the same way that "Red Red Wine" is a UB40 song. In the same way that "Pin Ball Wizard" is an Elton John song. In the same way that "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" is a Cyndi Lauper song. In the same way that "Venus" is a Bananarama song. In the same way that "Nothing Compares to You" is a Sinead O'Connor song. In the same way that "China Girl" is a David Bowie song. In the same way that "Gloria" is a Laura Branigan song. In the same way the "I Love Rock 'N Roll" is a Joan Jett song. Same with "Respect" by Aretha Franklin. But yet people will say that is their favourite x song by y and people accept that, because they sang the song on their album and people know it as "their song" for that reason. Is every Elton John song written by him. Or do we have to say, Favourite Bernie Taupin song? Or co-written by him? So yes. This is my favourite non-Pink Floyd David Gilbour song. Deal with it.
David Gilmour is one of my favorite rock artists. They just don't make music like this anymore. Music now days doesn't have this kind of soul. He is on my list of top 10 guitarists. Sucks to get old (50) cuz that means my favorite rock stars are too.
I bought David’s solo album on release, this was always my favourite track. I didn’t question the composition of the song so was genuinely surprised to learn (40+ years later) that David’s is in fact, a cover of the original from English band Unicorn. Regardless, thanks for sharing the lovely performance, David never disappoints.
I guess I’m a 2nd generation Pink Floyd fan. I discovered them when I was 12 but that would have been 1987 for me. Have loved them from the first song I heard. It did not occur to me to look into band members solo careers until a couple years ago. This is hands down my favorite David Gilmour track. And I am very much enjoying hearing more of his solo work.
I did some research and found out that the backup singer on the right, closest to David is none other than Katie Sagal from married with children and SOA. She also did backup for Bob Dylan. Very talented woman.
Somebody below commented that David's guitar playing wasn't "complex," ergo meaning that lessened the quality of his playing, and that it was just a bunch of bends. I have heard a lot of guitar playing in my time (I was around in the 60s), and I have heard a lot of "complex" playing that didn't move me. Music is a communication, not a race to the finish or a compilation of fancy fingering. David's playing includes a distinct sound, technical perfection, and emotion, and all of that still move me after 50 years of listening.
Simply an amazing LP. Remember picking it up when released and have had a few CD copies of the LP over the years. Still ranks as one of the best efforts from a period in which a lot of solid music was created and produced.
THOSE were the Days! ...But like a Very Fine Wine...David only gets Better @ Better...U must listen to. On An Island!!! Live 🌏 Amazing!! Fantastic! 🎸 🎸 🎼 💋 🎧💋
Gold, pure gold....the Man...what else to say? I'll miss him when he's gone, probably cry like a baby but the life work is there and solid! I'll enjoy until the day I die.
I cant believe that this has been on RU-vid for fourteen years and I'm only seeing it today (12/23) for the first time. The Hammersmith Odeon show has been one of my favorite concert videos for decades. This is superb.
A man with many words that he can make sound really good with all the rest of the band and all the electronic .If it weren't for the man at the mixer board he would just be another man in a band. But he is a very well like man and great voice.I am a true fan Pink Floyd.I have all the stuff he or they have ever put out .I am 67 and still have there sounds on all my Ipods and mp3-4 players.LOL to all and happy sounds to U..
Summer of 1984 - got to see him do all the best stuff from his first 2 solo records - sat 3rd row right in front of David - amazing show - kind of a shame he never really revisited any of those songs in his later solo tours - his setlists tended to lean more on older PF material by then ..
