Even so Romario is better. I'll argue that with anyone. Romario has scored like 900 goals dude. He's like one of the best ever. And you think Ginola is better?@@Bill-Butcher
@@decimustv4257 I didn't say anyone was better, I was just pointing out that it's difficult to compare players from different positions. Romario is better as a striker, Ginola is better as a winger. A comparison between Romario and Batistuta and a comparison between Ginola and Giggs would be more sensible.
Ginola was scapegoated for that disastrous 1994 world cup campaign...though I found it very unfair. As hosts , Framce had to bring their strongest side to the World Cup. Ginola would be going up against up and coming Zidane, a red hot Djorkaeff, a young Thierry Henry for those positions though they settled with Stephane Guivarch as striker( who?) Haha As for Cantona, he had quit playing France a long time and by 1997 was also retired
Just to sacrifice him for Zidane. The whole French team was highly athletic (in terms of playstyle) except Zidane. A pity but looks like it was right. And a very close one, imagine not getting through group stage because of Zidane's red card.
He is my favourite Spurs player. At a time Tottenham had poor team compared to Arsenal. He made me smile with his magic. Was player of the Yr in 1999 when United won Treble. Was good enough to play for Barcelona.
Absolutely! Very few purely two-footed players. Ginola was one of them. The others I can think of are Cazorla and Perisic, whom I have seen both taken freekicks and corners with either foot in a real match. Zidane is another, but havent seen him taken dead balls with either foot.
@@HenriqueM-jh1ye lol... those you mentioned arent even purely two footed. Have you ever seen the players you named taken free kicks with both feet? You're a great example of a Gen Z not knowing shit.
Remember watching him in the late 90s, outstanding player. You couldn't even tell which foot was his dominant. 7:00 was a free kick with his left foot.
They picked Zidane. It's unfortunate but it worked in the end. But it was a close one, knowing Zidane and his hot attitude sometimes.@@theculturedthug6609
@@theculturedthug6609made a bad pass in a qualifier that meant France didn't qualify for previous world cup and was banished from national team thereafter.
@@theculturedthug6609 like the previous person said, he gave the ball away and cause Bulgaria to score and eliminated France from 1994 WC qualitifcation. After that, the French national team manager decided to give youth a chance. Out went Ginola, Cantona, Papin etc and in came a certain Zidane and others.
@@bryanleeyf87, I think Cantona retired, but Ginola was unfairly vilified and scapegoated by Houllier. The Bulgarians cut right through France's midfield and defence, but nothing was said about that. They were gunning for him. France's loss, since he came to the Premiership after that.
One of those annoying buggers who's good at everything. He was strong, quick, great dribbler, passer, scored some beautiful goals and was a handsome bastard as well 😂
It wasn't the cross though was it, it was the unhinged scapegoating that buried him in France. The power of the mob and managers of low cunning like Gerard Houllieir.
Ginola was world class during his prime. The problem was he tend to go missing in a lot of games. Wasn't consistent enough except for that one season at Spurs when he won player of the year.
As a Villa fan, there were several players I'd actually tune in as a neutral to watch them play. Bergkamp, Zola and Ginola. All played with amazing skill and grace. A joy to watch. Playground players in the best possible way and the way their brains worked was incredible to watch. Sadly when Ginola played for Villa he'd lost that burst of acceleration and we didn't play in a style of system which suited him. A real shame because we had some really incredible footballers back then like Merson, Hadji and Angel. It just didn't work for him (or Hadji either). Sidenote- Merse was also a joy to watch for us.
Villa have always had some fantastic players! Think about when Ron Atkinson was there& Yer Man Paul McGrath turned up&I'm sure u know about him ( he could cancel out the best in the World, without breaking sweat& he was carrying around so much pain) but before then back when they took the league+2 European Cups.. But back to Ginola at White Heart Lane, was a treat,he was operating on a totally different level (( with his bag of tools) he could do it all& everyone else looked inferior!
Ginola played at his best level in Premier League because a lot of teams played offensive, long or direct ball. In Newcastle he played on wing at start but after he played more as a great middle as free offensive player. In Division 1 in Paris with Arthur Jorge or in France with Houillier or Jacquet, he was only left wing in very defensive teams. I think that s why he was good in Paris (with top George Weah!) , unsignificant in French team, and very more happy in Newcastle of Shearer and then in Tottenham. 94 was a nightmare and a resurrection for him. In France, he was insulted in all stadiums after World Cup 94. He couldn't stay in France, it was a reset for him but the end with French team or clubs. Cantona and Ginola were not overrated, they were just used and guided with top coaches and game ideas out of Division 1 and learn total efficiency. And the division 1 during 90's was completely better than Ligue 1 since 2010. More clubs played regularly and brilliantly European cups. Nantes, Auxerre and Monaco were the most offensive clubs during this decade. In this clubs, Ginola could reach the level he played in UK
He was like Frances version of Brazilian Kaka the way he ghosted past players like they weren't even there. An unbelievable player worthy of any top quality side. Fantastic player, imagine him in a team with Henry, Papin, Deschamps, Vieira, Fontain, Kopa, Platini, Zidane etc. JEESE.
@@ZamWeazle still one of Brazil's best exports to Europe. I would only put Romario, Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho and Neymar ahead of him in that sense. Without his injuries he could have been a top player for longer.
Amazing watching these old clips of a fantastic, exciting player that got people excited. Different game these days and rare to see players with this amount of space to express themelves.
And obsessed about todays recent Hero's Cr7 and Lionel Messi..David Ginola was doing this in France and England ( and all of the top sides wanted him!.Johann Cryuff said he's the best in the world& judge for urself) And all of this was done, with Def most def trying to take him out& draw blood if necessary! He was a Genius on the ball!
Arguably Ginola should have won the Balon D’Or. In 1998-1999 Ginola won both the PFA Player of the Year and the Footballer Writers Player of the Year in the year that Manchester United won the treble. He was the reason why Manchester United were stopped from winning the quadruple when Spurs knocked them out of the league cup. He was incredible and likely only didn’t win Balon D’Or due to Ginola not being called up by France due to his fallout with Houllier.
For a big man, with a higher centre of gravity, he controlled the ball like a classic Messi/Maradona, with much lower centres of gravity. He had the strength to hold off players. so he went down, far less often than many others with that level of talent. He had a truly excellent engine, but didn't appear have great health later on in life, I do not know why.
What there is to say about Mista David G.; is actually straight forward: An excellent athlete; with an eximious and well-kept ball reception skill; through his professional attitude, during midweek training. A man loyal to those who stayed by his side; unlike most other mercenary personality, of other footballing co-stars from his time at professional sports. And also, with a very consistent sportive physical and mental form; where you would see Mista David G. on the Premier League Monday's Highlight reel; week in, week out. Unless the same dude was injured, or yellow cards accumulation suspended. Also, later while Mista David G. was already retired from professional sports; it initially forgot to take care of his own body; since he wasn't being paid to practice sports anymore.
Ginola was like the French George Best. All long hair & dribble swagger, making a mockery of oppenents. I always wondered if he played in that French '98 World Cup team, if Zidane would have stood out as much? Ginola had as much, a great first touch as Zizou & for my money, was the superior ball dribbler, & pulled off the roulette skill, as well as Zizou. I think his very individualistic style of play may not have suited that French national team.
Tame by today’s standards in some respects but as a teenager spurs season ticket holder at this time he was worth the price alone. We were so garbage back then (despite ironically winning a cup) but he was the one shining light. You could just give him the ball and who stadium would stand up. I think he was the only non man utd player to make team of the year when they win the treble? Glorious player
It's true that Ginola played in one of the worst Spurs' team ever but he stood out. I remember us losing 4-0 at Coventry but he absolutely ran the show. His teammates were not on his wavelength. At all. Such a skilful player - I remember an outrageous goal he scored for Newcastle against Ferencvaros!
As a Spurs fan, the late 90's was a pretty grim time with a side generally lacking in flair but Ginola was the one shining exception. I remember going to see away game against Wimbledon when they played at Selhurst Park early in the 1998/99 season when we were lost 3-1 I think but Ginola was virtually unplayable that day so much better than anyone else on the pitch.
@@conorsmith8551 Not an arsenal fan at all. I rated Ginola as a player. Great skills. But he certainly wasn’t unstoppable. He was simply a very technically gifted player who often flattered to deceive.
Man I miss the days when wingers would go past their men. Nowadays as soon as they see the fullback they stop and pass the ball back. They're so scared of losing the ball.
The reason for Ginola's international career being cut short is NUTS. One misplaced cross that cost France the game against Bulgaria in '93 and the France manager Gérard Houllier starts a hate campaign against Ginola, branding him "the assassin of the team". One mistake, and he was literally never given a chance to redeem himself. Euro '96? Not in the squad. France '98? Not in the squad. During a period when he was one of the best players in world football, he wasn't even allowed to kick a ball at a major tournament for France. The sheer injustice of it all is just mindblowing.
Sure he did, but he undoubtedly played best football at spurs. in 99 when utd won treble with all their great players - ginola won every single award on offer@@romainviry3185
One of the best, and most underrated French players in history. His international caps are criminally low, due in large part to the disgraceful conduct of Gerard Houlier.
He played in an era when the English loved aerial play, cross cross and more cross! He was a genius with the ball on the grass. Tottenham couldn't understand his game...
Was invited to party with him and some other Spurs players back in the day, first thing you realise in person, the guy was huge, he didn’t need any security. Roy Keane speaks about the size of Zidane and how hard it was to play against him, David is the same height, they would have maybe dominated more with Ginola in the side.
Aah glorious old days when football was played by footballers. Nowadays we have striker who cant score, winger who cant cross, centre back who cant defend, and goalie who cant save coz we are playing "MODERN" football.
Cruyff said he was the best player in the world. This man was phenomenal. Look at how they tackled him, Messi has never been at the receiving end of one of those
Ginola could have had a much better international carrier but there was a big hate between Marseille and Paris players. Marseille was one of the best team in europe that time and when he do his big mistake in 1994 World Cup qualification against Bulgaria he was not welcome anymore.
