This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.
This Core Concept video focuses on David Hume's work, the Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding, and examines the passages that are sometimes called "Hume's Fork", which run: "If we take in our hand any volume; of divinity or school metaphysics, for instance; let us ask, Does it contain any abstract reasoning concerning quantity or number? No. Does it contain any experimental reasoning concerning matter of fact and existence? No. Commit it then to the flames: for it can contain nothing but sophistry and illusion."
As it turns out, the issue is a good bit more complicated than the binary that Hume seems to impose here
