David Kim found success on the world stage long before he became the concertmaster of The Philadelphia Orchestra. He became known internationally after succeeding in a renowned competition that would help him land work across the United States. However, one day he realized he needed to alter his goals, and that would change everything for him.

I love and admire this man’s humility and realistic assessment of himself and his ability. And his gratitude of the gifts he’s received and how miraculously everything in his life has turned out is truly inspiring. Thank you David Kim for being true to yourself and your gifts. We are all blessed by your talents and dedicated efforts.

This is outstanding. So many other fabulous concertmasters around the world began their careers as soloists. They can literally play anything but a certain something (hard to define) has not materialized. Several standard violin concertos were actually premiered by concertmasters and not soloists - Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, and Prokofiev are just three examples. As Robert Lipsett has said, "One eventually has to face a sort of reality. Being a top concert violinist is like running for President. There's just not much room up there at all." Also, the famous Romanian violinist Silvia Marcovici has stated "...just pray to the gods that luck may smile on you."

1:10-1:11 was my teacher, Ik-Hwan Bae. He was a tremendous violinist.
