The cards are designed to trick people that are colourblind they showed him different cards at the end.

It's not about colorblindness. The images are designed to appear differently when seen from afar and when seen close up. It's a clever trick and vsauce has already tackled this. For example a thin sharp line can be seen close up (by howie) but not from afar (audience). A blurred cloudy image is abstract (to howie) but gets clearer as you zoom out. And yes the performers showed him another set of cards in the last part when he can finally able to read. The difference between the set of cards is noticeable.

Leeman used the hand on Howies head to fix him in a specific location. So that everybody else saw the paper from a greater distance, but he was forced to remain too close to the image. Once his head was released the distance in which it was shown to him was changed, so that he could see what everybody else saw - and suprise suddenly he can read again. This is an effect of the so called hybrid images: On wikipedia it is shown, how you can change the word "southwest" into the word "northeast", by just changing the distance: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hybrid_image

It's not color blindness. There are no vibrant colors used on the cards. I've owned an optometrist practice for 20 years now, and I can tell you it had nothing to do with color defencicy and rather how objects appear closer than farther away. It's more a presbyopic trick than anything. But opposite. Kind of. Just pause the video on the first card. At the distance we see it, our brain automatically knows the word, it's clear. Now zoom into the video, it becomes much more blurred, and at the distance, the card is from Howie. It's much more blurry He's getting the shapes of the letters right, like he did on the first card that are similar, like C O I and N, just like he said. It's the letters with more complex shapes that will be almost impossible to read. Next time you go see your eye doctor ask them about what they're looking for when the chart reads letters like E D C... An E can look like an F a D can look like O, and a C can look like an O from 20 feet away etc. That's why Howie says C O N A.. or whatever on the first card. Those shapes are the most commonly found on acuity charts and easiest to identify. It's all about acuity and shapes.

Does anyone have a link to where I can print these cards out? What are their official name? What is the official name of this illusion? There has to be a link somewhere where you type the words you want and can print them out in the font that has this diffusion effect. CLEARLY. They had HOWIE MANDEL so obviously they have the source/software etc to generate printable versions of this illusion... PLEASE!

It's particular print that is not clearly visible from close up but visible from far. Then they skillfully switched prints with some that looks the same but can be always read.

It's a Hybrid Image - one word is blurred (low spatial frequency), the other is sharp (high spatial frequency). The blurred word is readable from far, the sharp word is readable from close up. At the end they swap the cards without the effect.

@@enxi0 Also isn't it true that they are taking advantage of Howie's colorblindness?
