www.rockhall.com/inductees/pearl-jam Comedian and late night host David Letterman inducts Pearl Jam into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame during the 32nd Annual Induction Ceremony at the Barclays Center in New York City.
I know this is about Pearl Jam, but can we give a hand to David Letterman who is still so damn funny at 70 years old, loves the best music, promotes it, and you can feel his passion for that era of grunge alternative rock.
Also a nod to Andrew Wood. Pearl Jam formed after his death. Mother Love Bone would've been the greatest of the big four. Soundgarden and Alice In Chains were the best of the big 4.
@Johnny Bravo Pearl Jam is pure Rock & Roll! Stone Gossard & Eddie Vedder said in a early interview they listen to Led Zeppelin. Grunge & Alternative Rock they're not. Being formed in Seattle with musicians from local bands was it. Also they are still touring after 20 yrs.
Anyone that hasn’t seen the letterman episode when he can’t stop humming Black. On air. Than Eddie bursts thru stage and told him to finally stop the Black obsession lol
That was one of the funniest moments on Letterman. Love the guy and he's hilarious, but the sheer "what" that I uttered at my TV was followed by one of the single biggest laughs I had. I'd be lying if I said tears weren't streaking down my face and that rarely happens. Cheers to Dave, Eddie, and the band. So wonderful.
To a band who was just more than a band , they were part of a movement!! And to have David Letterman induct you into the rock hall of fame is priceless!!
THANK YOU DAVE! Warren Zevon absolutely deserves an induction. Easily one of the greatest songwriters of all time and he goes ignored. Fantastic of Dave for the shoutout to Warren. And big congrats to Pearl Jam as well, very deserved.
It's crazy how many careers in entertainment in general he's helped. Comics, bands, actors....I know Norm Macdonald LOVED Dave and felt he owed him everything. Came on to do the last comedy set for Daves last episode even (and you know it meant a lot to Norm as his voice broke twice when he almost started crying and had to stop to compose himself and was in tears by the time Dave came over to hug him, which is probably the only time I've ever seen Norm break "character"). It's worth watching and very sweet, also sad being that Norms gone now.
I agree when it comes to music. I have friends that were signed and played on the Letterman show. He may be insightful and "intelligent." But he's known to be kind of a dick and his intelligence is selective.
you searched the internet to find information about the letter but you can't be bothered to watch a 15 min vid? The proportion of how much you care about the letter vs the effort required to find out would make for an interesting graph
I agree with ya, but they never won any MTV or any awards at shows and I kind of like that. Only 1 was WOULD and that was for best video... these award shows are BS anyways
@@splinteredspace3469 The awards shows are, but this is a bit different. And if the awards shows are BS (which I agree with), why the fuck are you bringing up the fact they never won anything as if that should keep them out of the Hall of Fame? It's a little different than awards shows and would be a nice thing to do. But ultimately it's pretty meaningless too. Nobody has ever said "That band was awesome"..."Well yeah, but they aren't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" as if it's somehow a judge of talent or how much fans love them. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that whoever profits the most from the rock and roll hall of fame is NOT a musician. Probably someone or someones that none of us have ever heard of who doesn't give a fuck who does or doesn't get inducted, just as long as they can keep collecting $$$
Obviously, Dave had great rock bands playing on his NBC show. But, when his CBS show started in 93, there was a musical revolution going on. Dave did so much to promote all those new bands!
I'm Staten Island... to me dave is a NY God.... we ran home in time just to catch his groundbreaking shows... 1980s were the best.... big up Paul Shaffer another NYC legend
Nirvana : 2014 Pearl Jam : 2017 Now all we need is Soundgarden and Alice In Chains induced into rock and roll hall of fame and the rock hall will be set with all grunge greats!
That might be the most respectable and deserving standing ovation I've ever seen. You'd almost think Dave was inducted himself. He's a great lover of music and seeing him sit beside my other idol Jimmy Page during Led Zeppelin's tribute, was a shocking treat.
I’ve probably watched this fifty times and I will watch it fifty more. My comedic and musical heroes being friends is something you can’t get everyday.
Watching My Next Guest Needs No Introduction and this, it's pretty clear that he's learned a lot, has a lot of regrets, and has become a much more humble man in retirement and parenthood.
dave has always been known for his sarcastic attitude. you can really see how much he care about these guys. especially Eddie. that letter at the end was great.
Idea by the show author and composer. A pure ironic critic to their ignorance of their success creator, who wished once to receive a letter with a guitar, but never did. playing violin projected on Letterman's son (similar age of the composer years ago) was a metaphor for playing First Violin as author anyway.
David Letterman pretty much sounds like everyone in 2021. Can't express how grateful he is to be out of the house, and what a gift being able to experience live music again truly is (and not take it for granted)
I was 8 when ten came out. My older brother had it, I'd sit outside his room listening to it while he was listening to it, I wasn't allowed to listen to it but I didn't care it was amazing. Jeremy was the first rock song I wanted to hear over and over and over again, that, heart shaped box by nirvana, no rain by blind melon, last dance with Mary Jane by Tom petty and the heartbreakers, I was barely ten, but those were the songs that got me through a lot of bullying and made me want to sing and play piano. Music is magical.
I spy Geddy Lee. Hey, this was a beautiful and heartfelt speech. Letterman loves music and i loved how he came down on stage with each and every band and shook their hands and meant it. Pearl Jam deserved this induction and so did Dave.
@@thekayes3364 Well yeah, who else would he mention? .....I'm just kidding. It's not easy to write a speech like this and of course he's gonna talk more about the guy that's the most well known by a long shot, the guy he's known for decades and is the one that is always interviewed, etc.I'm sure you know all that though, right? Of course you do, you just wanted to find anything to try and bring someone else down just because you're a miserable loser. Thats why you found someone who clearly loved it and chose them to reply to. You should write Dave Letterman and tell HIM your pros/cons and how he can improve, I'm SURE he'll get right on it. Or just stop being a bitch and go talk to people like this in the real world, I bet that'll work for sure!
By far the best induction ever. So heartfelt. And the letter written from Ed to Harry is why they are one of the best bands to Grace us. Great musicians and ever better human beings!! Long live PJ!!!
Pearl.jam.is.a legend...... My favorite band of all time! We perform one of thier song when i was 17......... Now im 45 but still i heard thier song my blood flows alive!!! Bravo eddie. And band mates deserve to be a hall of fame
....and congrats to PearlJam. They made a great impact on my generation, and I Hope their hard working and honest aporoach to music transcends, and passes on to the generations to come.
I've seen this video a couple of times just out of motivation, and I still can't figure our why someone would dislike it, Eddie Vedder and David Letterman, such iconic personas
When it comes to playing live, Pearl Jam is one of the few that never disappoints. I had them on my bucket list of bands I had to see at least once. It was 4th of July and they were in NJ. Across the river in Philly, they started shooting off a ton of fireworks. Pearl Jam accompanied that with "Keep on Rockin' in the Free World" THAT was intense. Seen them a couple more times after that. Still incredible.....
Their early/First Bonnaroo performance was such an amazing show - I mean I knew it would blow my mind but I was transformed during that show. I have been so devoted to Pearl Jam as one of the most talented musicians now, ever...
When he spoke about Black I knew this was coming.... I did that endlessly. What a tribute! Thanks Pearl Jam and Eddie you really led the band to a path of eternal beauty. Damn I am still humming Black as I am writing this.
I was there that night, and while I was at first very disappointed that my dream of seeing Neil and PJ share the stage was over, I truly believe that what Dave brought to the table, Neil wouldn't have come close. Fantastic, honest, genuine words from a true fan, that has been there since the start. Great Job Letterman and a truly magical night in Brooklyn all around.
In It To Spin It Got to see them play together in the mid 90s. It was a really great show. This turned out great, especially with Neil not being able to do it.
I feel a sense of gratitude that my wife introduced me to a CD in 1981 called Ten. I was so blown away by the songs, lyrics the entire experience of blasting this music in my ears changed me profoundly and all these years later still blown away by this group. I have listened to there music every single day since 91 during my commute to work Ventura to Santa Barbara on my prize possession my 59 knucklehead for 32 years! Yesterday was my last day to jump on my bike and commute 29 miles to work as I am now officially retired at the young age 61. Filled with emotions wondering what this next chapter will bring but one thing that won't change is my love for this band. I'll still jump on my bike their music blasting my ears my bike vibrating under me , not a half bad life. Thank you Pearl Jam for 32 years of keeping my company during my commute. I'm a lucky man because my wife and 5 daughter's will surround me thru my retirement and for certain pearl jam will be playing in the background😁👍. Here's to the next chapter in life and my upcoming golden years, yep I'm a lucky man👍. One love ♥️
If we look at those three bands and what Grunge has been and still is today here is what we can tell about it: Soundgarden and Chris Cornell were and remain its vivid brain Pearl Jam and Eddie Vedder were and are its pulsating heart Alice In Chains and Layne Staley were and are its tortured soul We can have our brain blown away, our heart broken to pieces... and yet we still survive. Just take our soul away from us and we are damn dead, dammit! Hail to Grunge's Finest and Greatest...
LADIES and GENTLEMEN, you just watched the greatest (unscripted - no looking into the camera) RRHOF induction ever recorded! Way to go, Dave, and congrats for having gotten "out of the house"!. Keep it up! LL
I was a junior or a senior in Marion high school when 91 rolled around. I remember very well the music which I the rest of generation x was so privileged to experience. So many years have passed since then but when I listen to any of the great's from then I'm taken back to my younger years and always feel and remember the passion bands like Pearl Jam brought to me. I can only congratulate and thank them.
Your right, and I'm fucking pissed because not one time did Ed thank Chris yet Matt was SG's drummer, it shows who truly loved and appreciated Chris in my opinion.
Five years later, and they still haven't listened. Warren still hasn't been recognized. I'll be excited again when he and Dick Dale are put in. Cheers to Dave, and hope the wish comes true soon.
Oh my gif. I love this. Letterman is so…so genuine with his intro. And I love him for this. And I love love love Pearl Jam. This is great. Thank you so much.
The fact that you have David Letterman, a talkshow host (which I do not say in a demeaning way), inducting you, not just one of your fellow artists, and you managed to have impressed him enough to do so pretty much tells you all you need to know about them. Also pretty sure everyone has that "du du du du" moment once in a while, I sure do have it every single time I see them play live still! One of the best bands ever, nothing but respect for them musically and from a humanitarian point of view we could go on for ages and ages really. They are an example to all of us.
Being from the UK, I remember as a kid trying to get anything I could from the David Letterman show on the internet. I wish I had it more available to me back then, but I love watching all the old clips and I followed it closely when I could watch it online. He's such a natural and a legend... he just makes it look so effortless to give such a perfect and funny speech. The tone of his speeches always seem to be so perfect, whether it's something very srious, something silly and funny, or something like this, recognising a great band for what they've done. What an amazing band and what a great speech by Letterman.
