I love David as well as Home Free, but David, in my opinion, wins. He sings with so much spiritual emotion! Between the 2 versions by David, the first one is still my all time favorite. I'm 73 years old, and that's the way I sang it in church choir, and sometimes the congregation would sing it as part of their Christmas Eve service.My grandfather was a minister so, again, the first version was more in the traditional style that i am use to hearing. Both versions gave me chills and tears filled my eyes. If i did not know of David's versions, i would choose Home Free...especially when Austin hit those high notes. The church is beautiful and HF's harmony is fantastic!

I have heard it hundreds of times and still get goosebumps every time. It brings me to tears too. Dont feel bad about that. The green sweater version is the best live performance I have ever seen by anybody on any song. I disagree with you on which version is better.

I vote for David Phelps as the best O Holy Night. The first version. It is so powerful and Anthony Burger, the pianist, adds so much to the performance. The choir comes in on the last chorus along with the pipe organ and its just phenomenal. IMO. David's green sweater version gets my vote!!!!

Wow, don’t apologize!!! THANK YOU for your authentic response! The older version, in my opinion, is the BEST ALL TIME VERSION -- EVER. Others singing it are ALL talented……but the difference is they are singing a song about Christmas….. David is singing about Jesus whom he knows personally. BIG difference. ALL the difference. 🙌🏼❤️🎄 The newer version also wonderful, in a different way. It is more about true worship. 🙌🏼 David Phelps DEF the best person to sing this, whatever version he chooses to sing!

It is fabulous and it's called Fall on Your Knees. David wrote the music and arrangement. He's such a talented man. Charlotte Ritchie does a fabulous job on the song, too. It will also give goosebumps.

There are some lovely versions, including Home Free's. But when David sings, the Holy Spirit is in the room and fills him. His faith and conviction take his versions to another level. He touches your heart and the words take on new meaning. Only enhanced by his incredible voice and musicianship.

In the first video that AMAZING piano player was Anthony Burger. I have David Phelps video with Bill Gaither interviewed David and David describing each song and then they played the song. They were talking about that O Holy Night with Anthony on the piano with his fingers rolling up and down playing so Beautifully. David told Bill that he told Anthony to just follow his lead because Anthony was that GOOD! Sadly Anthony passed away 😢

He is musical heaven and he draws you into the story and makes it come alive, he makes the experience of that night seem like real time when he sings and of course the anointing 8s like icing on the cake... In my world he can do no wrong, he's FIYAH 🔥❤️🔥💯❤️🔥💯❤️🔥💯❤️ 16:18 .... To compare him to an ensemble is unfair because he's one vocal against four... That being said no other vocal male or female can come close to Phelps period!

I love both Home Free & David Phelps but for me, David will always come out on top! I have listened to him for years now & what makes him different from other performers, is that he believes, lives & feels every Gospel song he sings. I love the first version better than the second, b/c sadly, the second felt more like a "performance" to me....although very good as well. It didn't give me the all the emotions that the first version does...every single time I listen to it.

David owns this song! He brings out his 3rd lung when he hits those money notes. He has the spirit of the Holy Ghost in him while he sings. He truly is using his God-given gift to glorify his Lord. the barn version is beautiful but in my opinion, nothing and no one will ever beat the green sweater version from 2000. I have to totally disagree with you on this. The green sweater is by far a greater version.

Both of David's versions are superb, but the first is the best by far for me. The second just seemed to focus on how versatile David's voice is. The first has the conviction that the second doesn't have.
