McRae won the world title for Richards' Prodrive team in 1995, although he left the outfit at the end of 1998.
McRae captured the public imagination when he won the World Rally Championship in 1995 in the famous Subaru Impreza 555.
The Scot also helped Subaru to win successive constructors' titles in 1995, 1996, and 1997 at a time when Richards was team principal.

Thanks for this. I've now found the answer to how Colin ended up with L555 BAT in his ownership.

Let's also not forget Richard Burns, every bit as good as Mcrae.

There's an in car video of Colin on one of the final stages of the RAC rally. It's the most amazing drive you will ever see in motorsport

He last words are kinda telling. Before WRC got too commercialised and refined and watered down it was a massive folk sport. Everybody knew about it and many wanted to be part of it. Now? Its a weak shadow of its former self.

I wonder what It would have become If Sebastien Loeb went for It and scored his 10th drivers title. People would probably start to think: why watch If we know he Is winning and has won the last 10 years? Make no mistake he Is a good driver, but behind him was Daniel Elena and Citroen not the least and look at him driving for Ford now. Kinda Ironic.

Nailed it man, I've watched rallying since year 2000 and I basically got bored of it at around 2006, as it was turning more and more into commercial sport for elitists. You saw less and less privateers taking part in the rallies, entry lists got lot more shorter, the coverage was becoming really brief and only focused on the Top 10 drivers. It got too expensive, too regulated, and the general public just wasn't there anymore to go to have some fun watching your local heroes go fast past you. Now when you watch it, it's almost like watching racetrack race with very streamlined schedule, no lower class drivers are ever shown in the live feeds, cars are overly technical and way beyond any privateers to even rent one for occational rallies. WRC should really stop and look at themselves at the mirror, and look back into the late 90's/early 2000's to see what the rallying was all about. To me, it was about this one big family of rallying heroes going around the globe in an adventure. It was one big family, and at its core, the people were pretty much the same kind of folk that watched it too.

I could forgive you if you refered to the Sebs era, but this is in the past. Now it's Rovanpera, WRC reborn! 🔥🔥🔥

The overriding memory of 95 was skipping the stages on the Sunday to get a good place at Chester Racecourse for the inevitable celebrations. Got chatting to the Subaru merchandising guys who let us have some Team Only Jackets not the usual ones they were selling to Joe Public. Every services we stopped at on the way back down to Reading people of all ages would be walking up and congratulating us yep there was hand shaking too on the win not knowing we had naff all to do with the team such was the following of Colin , Prodrive and the WRC that year. PS be carefull what you wish for as was lucky enough to sit in the silly seat with him on a test day at Cornbury Pk a few years later in the new WRC car. If im honest i shit my pants

He only won one championship. But Colin is a more than a great, because he singlehandedly turned around the fortunes of a whole car manufacturer, which they enjoy to date, worldwide. If he was alive today, Subaru/FUJI Heavy Industries would owe him some form of backdated yearly multimillion royalty payments just for doing so. May he RIP.

Colin was already making his mark in Rallying from the mid 1980s , long before Subaru jumped on the bandwagon!

Colin McRae And Subaru One of the Best Times to be a True Rally Fan ,I Preferred the Sound of Legacy Flat 4 Before they Changed the Manifold to Equal Length I Think That Was a Big Mistake As The True Subaru Flat 4 Rumble was Lost

The lack of competition between Sordo & Loeb during the dominant citroen years made the wrc boring.

Correct. From mid eighties to late nineties, it was exciting watching a rally where one of upto 8 different drivers could actually win the particular event. It wasn't certain. But now only one of 3 will do so. Same in boxing. Tyson was a great because the guys he beat were all big names too. I wasn't a big boxing fan, but could name 6 different contenders to take him on. Now I couldn't name 2 of them.
