Returning to the gorgeous duality of David Draimen’s voice we’ll be checking out some of the unique sounds of Disturbed’s “Down With The Sickness”. It’s like there’s part angel and demon going on here so join me in breaking down this marvellous singer who destroyed me with “Sound of Silence”.

You need to also remember that you're looking at a relatively new band in this video. You can hear that David's voice is much younger and less mature than the one you heard in "Sound of Silence". Sixteen years of touring does a lot to a lead singer's vocal cords... some good, some bad, depending on how they use them. In David's case, I think he sounds better today than he did 20 years ago. This tells me he hasn't abused his voice, as much as strengthened it.

I was lucky enough to catch Disturbed in a small venue in Nashville very early in their career and...David was an an absolute force on stage. Everything you highlight for his voice, is so much more impactful live because of stage presence. Honestly as a an amateur vocalist, David's work inspires the hell out of me.

Down With the Sickness is probably the most well-known Disturbed song, and the "oh-wah-ah-ah-ah" in it is certainly the most iconic of David's "noises", but there are other songs where he makes different noises, and does them more often. Asylum and This Moment come to mind immediately, followed by Stricken, The Game and Haunted. Other songs I would recommend would be Pain Redefined (more for the unusual progression and cadence on the verses than anything else) and Overburdened (for more of his "sweet" tone - I would agree that that's a good adjective for it).

2:44 Exactly. I was listening to Disturbed for years before they did "The Sound of Silence." Their established style of music makes their rendition of that song even more mindblowing because of what a departure it was. And yet, it was so expertly executed. And it wasn't their first cover on one of their albums. They did a cover of Shout by Tears for Fears on their album The Sickness. They did Land of Confusion by Genesis on their album Ten Thousand Fists. It wasn't until their album Immortalized in 2015 that they did their cover of The Sound of Silence. And now it has become one of their most well-known songs.

When I hear this song, I have thoughts about one thing. When I was an indy wrestling referee, I met a guy who went by the named “Hardcore Kid” during a show in Jesup, Georgia. I had his match against Adam Lyger, who was a friend of his. They had an incredible match that went about 8 minutes. After the match, I ran to the back and thanked both of them for the match. I did another match they did with Darin Lynch, another person I was close with who threw out the idea of me being a “heel referee.” Five years later, I’m working for a group down here in Charleston , SC and he’s on the card but now known as “Josh Magnum.” For his entrance he used “Down With The Sickness.” A few years later, I get on a “Hall of Fame” show being held by a group in Orangeburg, SC as part of the group in Charleston. I get to the show with a friend who was working as a manager on the show. I get to the show and find out that it’s a tag team match with Josh in it and I had the match. Now, the group that was hosting the show was a group that Josh was HUGELY over with the company’s fanbase. Plus, Josh hadn’t worked for them in a couple of years and they didn’t know he was going to be there. Once I realized that, my brain went full throttle into an idea to get as big of a reaction as possible. I’m in the ring with the ring announcer and he introduces the match. The first ones out were the heels with the manager who rode up with me. They get in the ring and taunt the fans. Then, the ring announcer introduces the 1st half of them who comes out to “Billie Jean” by Michael Jackson. He comes down the aisleway and walks around ringside while high-fiving fans. He gets back to the aisleway and stops. After a very brief pause, the lights go out and his entrance video comes on as that opening drumbeat starts. I knew the reaction would be good but I wasn’t prepared for this. The crowd, which was maybe 300 people, went crazy. I couldn’t hear myself think. I could barely hear the music which was blaring in the National Guard Armory where this was. I was doing everything I could to not react myself. It’s one of my favorite moments as a referee. So, whenever I hear that song, that’s the first thing I think of. Also, earlier in the back, I was talking with Josh about the reaction he would get when he came out. In his deep voice with a strong Southern drawl, he looks at me and says,”Brother, I don’t think they’re going to remember me.” I think this may have played a role in why I enjoy reaction videos.

Another great analysis with the added bonus of your best visual reaction since "Aqualung" or "Hurt". looked like you and David had a moment in the beginning with the whispered "You feel that" like the visual reaction "My empire of dirt" with Johnny Cash. You can see the emotional connection you're having with the music which is the thing that I thik sets your reactions, Chase's, Elizabeth's etc apart from the vast majority of reactors. You just dont listen and analyze, you feel and understand the music. Bravo again!

The use of his vocals as a strong part of the rhythm and not just the melody is what first got me into Disturbed. Namely, the first song I heard of theirs was Liberate, and the way his vocals blend melody and rhythm so completely in that song's verses in particularly really got me. Lol, the outtakes at the end. To make that 'noise' (lol), you have to sort of go into subharmonic and then squeeze off the air. As you squeeze off the air, you'll notice the pitch going up. If you want higher volume, put in a bit more pressure. This will hurt your throat though, so don't sustain for too long. The 'dog bark' is high pressure bursts into a growl. Normally you need sustained high pressure for a growl... for the bark, you increase the pressure a bit more beyond that, but you don't sustain.

I'm glad you watched the full version too. A shame that it wasn't in the video, but at least you've heard it, cause I always thought it a shame that most reactors just watch the official "clean" version w/o the "mommy" verse.

When Julia sits there saying " I'm not a harsh vocalist " Looking straight into the camera.. All serious.. Well.. fair enough.. But do you know how cool it would be if you in that moment, red lipstick looking in the camera just had begun to growl.. It would have been like when a certain voice mother spat out tea listening to Jinjer.. I remember my teen years. Listening to Disturbed every where we went. It was amazing.. Thinking back on it I just feel old though :D

David Draiman and Chester Bennington both have a voice of an angel and the scream of a demon. They both have soft calming voices but they both also have the ability to do a more harsh vocal that just goes right through you in a good way.

I watched them live. They got our attention. They opened for Korn.

Please do a video reaction of disturbed singing "the light"! It has heavy moments but mostly toned down, somewhere mid way between Sound of silence and Down with the sickness. I think it is a Fantastic song that showcases his pronunciation brilliantly, with softer tones and belts as well. Given your thoughts on these two Disturbed songs, I think you'll like it :)

DUDE!!!!! I t never even crossed my mind, but you're 1000% correct!!! 😎💯 Drummers LOVE this song, even when they joke about it! But its because he's doing the vocals like a percussion instrument!!! 💯 Its almost like its there to reinforce the drums, and THAT is why we can't get it out of our heads!!!

Julia, PLEASE check this out! Based on your videos I PROMISE you will not regret this! Toronto gave the world two AMAZING power trios during the same time period, Rush and Triumph. It's an over-simplification but you could say that Triumph's vocalist Rik Emmett was the 'Geoff Tate' of the late 70's even though their careers overlapped. Different from most bands, Triumph featured TWO really good lead vocalists. Drummer Gil Moore is also an impressive vocalist and does sing lead on a few of their songs. I remember comparisons of Rush and Triumph back in the day because they're both trios and both are from Toronto but they each went down very different paths. Triumph probably got a little more radio airplay at the time, they were known for their HUGE sold out shows full of big light and sound presentations, their music was more mainstream and they had the IMPRESSIVE vocals of Rik. You think he's reached his high note then he goes even higher. Plus their songs for the most part all have very positive lyrics. They were known as "the good guys of rock and roll". Magic Power, Fight the Good Fight, Never Surrender and A World Of Fantasy all have Rik doing the lead vocals, all were on the radio and any one would be a great choice for a "deep dive". Then check out Gil, probably doing When the Lights Go Down because that's my personal favorite Triumph song but he also sings Lay It On the Line and Spellbound. Depending on the video you pick you might see a guest guitarist and think they're not a trio but they are as defined by Rick Beato in his video of the best power trios, both Rush and Triumph get mentioned. Rush stayed together, Triumph had issues with that which is why they're less known these days and is very sad because they were/are truly amazing!
