I have never heard so much common sense spoken about politics in 50 yrs. David, like you. I'm a Lancashire lad, only I'm from Bolton, not Oldham. We have county courts, city, town, and village halls, all for the purpose of locals debating and agreeing to how the city, town, or village should proceed with any given set of circumstances or needs. Think of how Birmingham would be right now if it were responsible to itself and its citizens and not central government. I feel that education, local services, law, and bylaws often ignored today should be topics locals have a say in, where money goes, i.e., which dept, etc. The issue is that central govt wants the authority to create a homogenous society, to dilute localities into the bigger pot, to give cause and reason to funnel ever increasing funds to central govt to be divided up. This inevitably increases costs across the entire nation, whereas traditionally, any losses were carried locally, not nationally. Bad councillors were dismissed and new ones appointed. To repair damage, poor councillors caused. The healthier, better managed councils paid lower rates and had better services and attracted better prices for property take Cheshire as an example 60 yrs ago it was a great town well run compared to other areas nearby. It therefore attracted money and grew wealthier, and property increased in value. We need independent MPs in the House of Commons, not parties and local councils, to be independently run and self-sufficient again, cutting cloth to their ability to provide things, and their desire to improve them where needed.

well it was quite obvious after 911 that they were planning to take away all our freedoms, I might have been young, but all those new anti-terror laws on the news made things quite clear to me. I kept saying "what is a terrorist exactly?" I was very concerned with how little regard they had for human life after a stunt like that, I was worried when all the news stations all clicked together and all started asking the same irrelevant questions. I was worried that they started calling scientists and experts extremists. I was worried that 1 plane was recaptured by the passengers and shortly after, 1 building was completely demolished after a small fire. I was worried that George bush called those who question these events unpatriotic. I was worried that all those terror laws were designed for us! I have spent my life waiting for the trigger, I have always known that everything they put into place was perfect for use against us in the event of almost any emergency. When the jet streams broke down they had their perfect excuse 7 years ago. But that whole subject is garbled and confusing by design! Both sides lie in different ways, but they both lie for the same reasons - they want it to happen, they want us ignorant, they want to take full advantage & they want us to be grateful suffering slaves as the new world order takes its shape on a changing world. Wouldn't be the first time!

Hilarious! 'The British Constitution' does not exist in the traditional sense of the word, and if you actually look up the definition of 'Constitution' online you get "Britain lacks a codified constitution" as an example of its use in a sentence. As an English Libertarian Centrist Nationalist the British legal system is a nasty, fat mess. I wouldn't wipe my backside with it, although it's so bulky you could wipe practically every Englishman's bottom and still have a few pages left over for their wives.... no joke! -- If we actually had a proper constitution (simple, easy to understand rules & rights that frame and limit laws) it could be protected by Constitutional Direct Democracy. 66.6% absolute majority of all Nationals needed to change or suspend level 1 rules & rights, 51% for level 2, level 0 set in stone.

Blair was a Trotskyite as was Alistair Darling... In 1997 They enacted a year zero policy, not just in the judiciary, but on key cultural institutions "we will build from scratch" which required discarding many historical truths. As part of Blair's cultural revolution, polytechnics and technical colleges were abolished and The Enlightenment, which had forever been considered the touchstone of first year humanities courses, was replaced by key representations of cultural history examined through a Marxist lens. Undergraduates were fed Gramsci, Foucault, Berman, Engles, Lukács, Bakhtin etc..( i still have the books) Under Blair, higher education would no longer transmit culture. Its sole purpose was to unmoor students from their history and firmly establish the idea that our past was nothing more than a litany of racism and colonial exploitation...

thank you Dr Starkey for finally explaining to ME anyway, just how Labour destroyed the British system of government and why we are in this state just now. it does concern me the amount of NGOs there are. I would quote as an example Ofcom, who regulate TV and media output and who were put in place to uphold the rules governing TV output but now make their own rules - WITHOUT any debate in parliament. so little is debated in parliament now. democracy is dying, which makes it so very dangerous for us as a nation and what dystopian horror it will lead us into. I would also agree that we should perhaps look back at what DID work and adopt it again. We cannot go on re modelling and reinventing parliament and government. It will eventually clash with itself, but we are seeing signs of that already with the different NGOs coming up against one another.
@wazz1154
@wazz1154 7 месяцев назад
Labour destroyed the British system of government, and that is the reason why we are in the state we are now in - utter twaddle. The reason why we are in the state we are in, is because the bankers crashed our economy in 2008, and before the economy could recover fully, we got landed with 14 years of Tory governments, each one sliding down the scale of competency as each one entered, ending up with a PM who was completely clueless, who lied every time he flapped his lips, and who put a government in place based on loyalty to him only. Talent, experience and competency were undesirable traits, where as arse licking was a necessity. Starkey is a right wing nutter, who would see the UK decline back in to a Dickensian era all over again, perhaps even going back even further! I wish for once these nutters would take responsibility for their own failings, Blair lost me when he went in to Iraq, but the mess we are facing now as a country is a fault of this lot entirely, so they should suck it up, and play the adults and take responsibility for their own fluff ups!

Absolutely correct, as usual. It takes a historian of David Starkey’s calibre to analyse the recent history of “New” Labour’s destruction of our nation. As he says (and this was my reason for voting for Brexit) when we removed the confusing influence of the EU, we could begin to understand how our nation REALLY needed to recognise our own shortcomings, and hopefully how we might rectify the problems. As usual, we can (with Starkey’s help) understand how Labour’s ignorance of our government structure has created a system of departments all in competition with each other, producing the sclerosis we are suffering. God knows how we can reverse the damage inflicted on us, particularly as (as seems likely) the Labour Party might win the election next year. With this party blundering about our government again, one can only imagine the further destruction awaiting us. Horrifically, with leaders of Sunak’s quality, it seems unlikely the conservatives even now can identify and repair the damage done, even after the next term of Labour catastrophe.

The problem with the conservatives is that they get complacent and then corrupt. John Major’s government became complacent and corrupt and people had enough of them and voted “New Labour”. The problem was that New Labour stayed in power too long. 1 term should have been enough to teach the tories a lesson and get their act together and they didn’t. It took 2008 to get rid of Labour. Even then we ended up with the coalition and the increase in tax free allowance was dumb in the extreme, cost the most did the least. It reduced the tax take so we don’t have enough tax coming in and have hit the middle class who are the people who fund the economy. (They buy the stuff they don’t need). Too many people taking out more than they put in. The thing Labour did well was rescue the banks in 2008 (they caused the problem tbh) but they didn’t think how to recover from that so we are still suffering from it. The tories didn’t resolve it either when they got in and ignored the problem and now we are in inflation mire because of it. When Labour get in this country is likely to be finished and it will take another Mrs T or Churchill to sort it out. God help us.

Absolutely brilliant expose, Starkey is getting better and better by the day. He should be our national educator. His unfathomable and penetrating analysis, intellectual grasp of issues is extraordinary. I have for a while considered our country ungovernable due to public sector organisations, NGOs and the like spawning into self-serving, unaccountable, Byzantine bodies, akin to fiefdoms. The only glue holding them together is “group think” which has morphed into a form of idolatry. Any attempt at challenging group think through rational debate, intelligent discussion results in one being thrown into the Tower of London.This is where Blair should be incarcerated rather than being allowed to strut between his mansions, or staying in five star hotels and the like.

They will of course appoint left leaning experts....Unbelievable the ruin Blair caused to Britain and that it seems to have qualified him to be a consultant to governments around the world....A globalist plot if ever there was one....

The UK (Anglo-Saxon) legal system was based on individuals (and businesses) being sovereign, with the legal system only required to step in to act as a referee. The Napoleonic legal ststem, as practiced across Continental Europe, is very different, as it effectively the state is sovereign that proscribes how individuals (and businesses) operate. When the UK joined the EU, we effectively traded legal systems, although it was under Blair that we accelerated there.

This American apprecites your praise of our small town (and county) governments. We who live in the rural U.S. enjoy efficient, cheap and responsive government. Why? Because many of us are the government. We are elected or appointed by our neighbors to carry out very specific tasks. And we do this without any compensation except expenses. My Grandfather was on the rural water board and went farm to farm signing up his neighbors. My cousin was on the county road maintenance board.

Well said, Mr Starkey 👌✨ (may you live long and continue to make sane contribution amidst this 'mire' of societal madness). The changes made by the Blair government, back then, helped facilitate the UK's descent into globalist control, currently. As "Agenda 21" & "The Great Reset" was in the planning decades ago, Blair 'did his (initial) bit for Davos' whilst in power then and he (through the Tony Blair Institute) continues to participate as a contributer to the WEF, at every given opportunity. We need the political will (from somewhere?) to restore what served Britain well in past times, before the 'window of opportunity' to reform/restore is lost altogether. 🤞🙏🤞

Once again Dr. Starkey, absolutely brilliant clear thinking, which enlightens all reasonable people's thoughts. Blair is a creature without honour (his choosing to accept the garter when her late Majesty was nearing the end of her reign, the ultimate insult and irony) and without an ounce of romance in his soul, assuming he has one.
