Standing firm on this stony ground The wind blows hard, pulls these clothes around I harbour all the same worries as most The temptations to leave or to give up the ghost I wrestle with an outlook on life That shifts between darkness and shadowy light I struggle with words for fear that they'll hear But Orpheus sleeps on his back, still dead to the world Sunlight falls, my wings open wide There's a beauty here I cannot deny And bottles that tumble and crash on the stairs Are just so many people I knew never cared Down below on the wreck of the ship Are a stronghold of pleasures I couldn't regret But the baggage is swallowed up by the tide As Orpheus keeps to his promise and stays by my side Tell me, I've still a lot to learn Understand, these fires never stop Believe me, when this joke is tired of laughing I will hear the promise of my Orpheus sing Sleepers sleep as we row the boat Just you, the weather, and I gave up hope But all of the hurdles that fell in our laps Was fuel for the fire and straw for our backs Still, the voices have stories to tell Of the power struggles in heaven and hell But we feel secure against such mighty dreams As Orpheus sings of the promise tomorrow may bring Tell me, I've still a lot to learn Understand, these fires never stop Please, believe, when this joke is tired of laughing I will hear the promise of my Orpheus sing
From the first time I heard this album, I knew it was simply something unique. David Sylvian has the most beautiful male voice ever, so warm, rich textured, mixed with an exceptionnel dramatic charge. Interpretation is from another world (maybe another time, far away from today's mediocrity), artistic content and melodies are pure art. I hope there will be much generation after us to enjoy so much talent.
Mai sentito in radio.
Bottles that tumble and crash on the stairs are just so many people, I knew never cared. The words and lines just trip from his mouth. Exquisite David Sylvian! My best from Belfast. x
When the storm strikes at the end of my Desert Island Discs, scattering my treasured, scant belongings, this is the one I'd run myself ragged to save. Sublime.
this is one of my favourite sylvian songs. one could understand it as written from the perspective of eurydice (of course many other interpretations are equally valid and available). in it, she sings about her and orpheus's ultimately tragic journey back from hades to the living world. the exquisite pathos of the song derives at least in part from it being sung during the journey, when eurydice still has hope that, once they reach the living world, she will be able to hear her orpheus sing. however, as the listener knows, orpheus will turn around a moment too soon, and eurydice will be whisked away back into the underworld, leaving the lovers separated once again ...
Utterly superb! Just beautiful. Absolutely love the lyrics. Especially the "i wrestle with an outlook on life that shifts between darkness and shadowy light" bit. Beautiful!
Sublime song that got me through much of my very early twenties...a promise, a hope for better things to follow. I really appreciate the ambience in the video - you can impose your own narrative on it. May the good David Sylvian prevail...have a wonderful 2018 Mr Sylvian you have inspired so many!
Fratello . Anima Affine. Grazie a Tutti. Thanks to Everyone.
as a 15 year old turkish teen girl, david sylvian’s songs hits different. a truly masterpiece. i compared gen-z songs and this, the old songs has deep meanings. love it.
I remember seeing this video at a summer show at the Royal College of Art in London, probably in the '90s, I assumed it was one of the students' work. Is this possible? 3.49 onwards is sublime
I love Japan, but my interest after was for Mick Karn. I may have a bit of bias against David sometimes, but this song is beautiful. Reminds me clearly of the beauty of Sylvian's voice. He has his moments. ;)
Tell me, I've still a lot to learn Understand, these fires never stop Please believe, when this joke is tired of laughing I will hear the promise of my orpheus sing
La musica finisce e tu ti chiedi quando inizierà una terza parte del brano. Quando un istante dopo realizzi che non c'è, non hai altra scelta che riascoltarla. Capolavoro senza tempo.
I thank you very much for this song and we wish you all a good journey. Working with monks 😄 of all persuasions, I gave them this song which is old now but still alive, translating the words, and everyone is uplifted and motivated. It's a breath! To do and build better and ever simpler. Thank you 🙂
Before I saw this video for the first time I had bought the album as a teen, when I heard the album in its first entirety I always pictured the album in sepia tones, I tried describing that to people but they didnt grasp it, theres a light and shade to this album. Its the greatest album I think ive ever heard, I couldn't even explain to anyone its style or genre, its Just Secrets of the beehive,
