David Taylor is a 2x NCAA D1 National Champion, 2x Hodge Trophy winner (awarded to the most outstanding college wrestler of the year), 4x Big Ten Champion, and a 4x All-American. He also starts it with a backstep/sprawl for distance, to make the entry safe. This serves as his 'snap down' and pulls the opponent forward when he lands to shoot forward. The opponent either steps forward or gets top heavy and can't move his legs to defend. Sometimes the ankle pick merely serves as 'insurance' for the single or double leg.

I love the ankle pick. I've been using it since my sophomore year all the way up to now in MMA and BJJ, it's definitely one of my go to's since I do have longer arms myself. My other favorite takedown would be the sweep single and I often lead with the ankle pick and chain it into a sweeping single or double leg if they try to sprawl on the initial shot.

im a highschool wrestler and the ankle pick is one of my weakest moves but every match i do and record i notice how many times i have the opportunity to use it and get a takedown. after watching this the underhook to a ankle pick looks like something i'd like considering the underhook to a single leg is one of my favorite takedowns as of right now so adding something new to my arsenal would be amazing

Yeah the fake guard pull to ankle pick is cool as well, but I like how you can control your opponents posture w/the collar tie. I agree with you about the lack of motivation for takedowns rather than just pulling guard. I think it's just a smart idea to have a well rounded game. Thanks for the feedback, and again... great video!

So one thing I notice and couldnt wrap my head around was the drop leg .For some reason, I could not visualise it .But then I realized its because David's opposite leg (to his collar tie) is forward .When I roll (no gi bjj) my opposite leg is behind , to how Marcelo has it here :ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MCt2a-mj530.html Do you think that changes anything significant with regards to transitions to other attacks?

Interesting concept. Coincidentally, if damage per second in wrestling meant something along the lines of "points scored per minute," collegiate David Taylor would likely be one of the highest dps wrestlers in recent memory. 2019 Jason Nolf or Bo Nickal would give him a run for his money, though.

@dao8611
@dao8611 6 лет назад
Is the stagger step where he bangs/applies pressure on their head to unbalance them a bit before he picks the ankle?
@triforcehammers7141
@triforcehammers7141 6 лет назад
I have a video on my channel explaining footwork. Stagger step is how he moves his feet. Watch how his feet hit. He staggers his backstep and his front foot is off the ground or he drives straight to the knee. His chest is also being thrown to the mat as he reaches. This is not an ankle pick per say. This is a Cael Crawl Pick, a variation of the ankle pick. I love the breakdown, but it's not detailed enough. I've watched about 3-4 hours of film on taylor. I can break every movement and set up down. I teach it to my boys.
@dao8611
@dao8611 6 лет назад
TriForce Hammers I'll watch the video after my workout. I'm sure it'll help me. I've been having a bit of trouble this year with my picks and this video helped a lot so maybe more info will be even more beneficial
@triforcehammers7141
@triforcehammers7141 6 лет назад
You have to break down the fine details. I have about 10-15 footwork drills I put my athletes through. I was a 2x D1 all-american and I coached D1 for 4 years. This video is great. I love the detail, but there are finer points that need explained.
@triforcehammers7141
@triforcehammers7141 6 лет назад
I completely understand Dan! I break moves down differently for youth, middle, high, and college age groups. It is very difficult to please someone new to the sport with the super fine details. One detail that needs to be addressed is the timing of everything. Do you see how he gets most people to step with a slight push/pull with the collar tie? It's so subtle and is easily missed, but that's a major set up to most Cael and Taylor's pick. The reason I call it a Cael Crawl is because he looks like he crawls to his double. David Taylor put his own spin on Caels shot and I love it. If you ever want to talk wrestling, come sub. I definitely like your videos. They are a great source I reference from.

@MrDukes1111
@MrDukes1111 6 лет назад
however i will add, not sure it was mentioned. while locked up, you can drag your opponent lets say to your back right foot, that'll make them move there left leg more squared up and easier to reach for you guys with shorter arms or if you're just slower, you can drag, then begin the reaching for the pick of the ankle that hasn't even reached where it's at yet, pretty much attacking where the ankle WILL be if that makes any sense. That's how i usually do mine.

I am a short stocky guy. I loved to use this move. It is all in the set up and timing. Having this weapon in your arsenal is pretty essential. Watch your opponents feet and get him slightly off balance with a collar tie or an under hook and go straight for the back of his ankle if you can go all the way to the back of his heel you usually Got him.

8:26 is a fucking kuchiki taoshi. And I thought it didn't exist in the world of wrestling. Wow. The lack of the gi to pull down on must make it so much harder. That tricep grip must be rock solid. Kibisu gaeshi to kuchiki taoshi, or ankle pick to 'dead tree drop' (maybe knee pick?). Great combo when they are in jigo tai, you go for kibisu gaeshi. They step out and straighten out to shizen tai - you go for kuchiki taoshi.

Great video! Thank you for posting. I first learned about the ankle pick a couple of years back when watching a match between Cael Sanderson & Daniel Cormier. It was amazing how many times Cormier was getting caught by it. It was love at 1st sight when I saw it being used and I had to make this technique a part of my arsenal as a mixed martial artist. My favorite techniques are always the low risk techniques. I also love that mixed martial artists rarely, if not never train ankle pick defense. It's always the single or double that they train for. Big surprise when they are not ready for it. Also love how it's a good way to take the back and finish with the real naked choke.
